As Anna looked out the window and watched the raindrops fall, she thought about the day ahead. Just a normal day, she though. But she was wrong. Very wrong.

Anna got to school and all seemed normal, so she went to her usual spot on the benches by the band room. But when she heard a scream she looked up from her book to see what was up. She didn’t know why but in the back of her mind she knew this day would change her life.

When she saw someone run past the office who looked like he didn’t belong she stood and walked over to her few friends, who were also confused. She walked cautiously but quick.

“What‘s going on?” she asked her friends Jay and Lilly. “I have no idea” Lilly said, worried. “But it has something to do with that guy that ran past, I‘m sure.”

Anna looked at Jay and noticed a strange look on his face. She had known him since kindergarten and knew that look.

“What is it? I know you know.” Anna said, somewhat demandingly. When he didn’t answer she nudged him lightly. “I know why there was a scream.” Jay replied finally, and then ran off in the direction of the noise.

By now, many people were gathering around an making a commotion. RING!!!!! The bell sounded. Anna took out her phone and checked it. “7:35? What the……” she said quietly to herself as she just stood there, people surrounding her trying to go to class. She knew there was a good reason why the bell had sounded, and she wanted in. Jay would tell her nothing, and Lilly was clueless.

Anna walked to the bathroom nearby and walked in, pretending to fix her hair. When the second bell sounded, she raced out to see a totally empty campus. She walked quietly and quickly to where she’d earlier heard a scream, and the first thing she saw was a gun sitting on the cement. It was obviously thrown.

“HEH….HEH….HELP!!!!!” she heard a familiar voice call, and she dropped her book bag and ran. She made it about five feet before she dropped to her knees and cried out “OH MY GOSH!!!!”

Anna saw her dearest friend, as close as sisters, Sayde. She was lying on the ground in between the band building and “E” building. She called out again “PLEASE, ANNA HELP ME!!!!”

Anna felt her heart race and drop at the same time, as she bent over and hugged her blood-soaked friend. “WHA…WHA….WHAT HA..HAPPENED TO YOU?!?!?!” Anna called out, sobbing now, her eyeliner flooding her face being led by her tears.

“It‘s okay, I knew it was coming. I just didn‘t believe it.” Sayde said, crying too. “That boy…Chris…he wanted to kill me because I called his sister skank.” she continued, staring Anna in the eyes. “And Jay knew too.”

“But…Why would someone do such a thing?” she asked, scared now that she was loosing her. “I don‘t know…He was pissed. They both……had a……” Sayde took a deep breath and finished “Really hard life……” she trailed off and her eyes closed, right as Anna heard the sirens.

Paramedics rushed around Anna, and she was yelled at to get to class. She refused. No way she was leaving her best friend. Sayde was really all she had. When she had broken her arm Sayde was the one there helping her get to her house and laughing at the way she did it at the same time. Sayde was the one who was there for her when Anna was considering cutting herself. Now she was between life or death and Anna was scared for both of their lives. If Sayde died Anna would not know what to do at all.

“BEEP BEEP BEEP!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Anna shot up and her heart skipped a beat. She had had the dream again. What am I going to do? She thought, wiping her head. It had been a month and nothing was any easier like they had said, just harder.

Anna looked down at her wrists. There was a mark there, and she held it. She held it close to her and looked up to the roof. She spoke softly to herself, but really to Sayde, “It‘s from the kitten. I stopped myself. I was going to do it, and I wasn‘t going to stop. But I did. See? No scars. I promised you I wouldn‘t, and I didn‘t.“

Anna felt proud of herself. A few weeks ago she was totally ready to cut herself, but then she remembered how Sayde had begged her not to when she was considering it before. Anna heard her words in her head exactly, and smiled. “Oh yeah, and Sayde…I miss you but…I do have one thing to say…Thank you.”

And with that Anna stood to pee and get ready for school.
