Not necessarily - and I know - this is frowned upon ; but I usually take my rats for a 'meeting' .
You meet up with a breeder or someone trying to adopt out their rat and have the two interact for a while . Usually you can tell whether it's going to work or not .
Just don't go to a petsmart or petco , because their pets are known to carry illnesses . ( And pet stores are awful , of course :L )

Why don't you try intro-ing to another rat around his age ? Could you afford just one more boy ?
Intros are usually better when they're the same age .

Well if he's getting aggressive then perhaps it's best for him to be alone . I know that some rats just get all bitter and angry as they age .
You could just get a smaller cage for him and just give him more attention . Then once the babes are older , switch them out ? That's what i'm doing with my girls.

Ugh , I hate baby intros . I just got my three newest girls to get my rat out of her depression and she's being a little butt to them rolleyes
So she's probably going to have to stay in a cage by herself also . I wish rats weren't so damn picky about their companions ! stare
It would suck for your older guy to have to be alone . . . but you could probably find a cheap cage on craigslist . Probably not something as big
as your ferret cage , but decent sized at least , and for cheaper than store price . ( I just build my own cages , honestly xd )
