I guess that when I think of hippies, I think of the "make love, not war" 60's hippies, not the methane-car neohippies.



My mom and I are the only ones in my family who aren't religious.

We find it best not to tell anyone, because we know that if they ever find out, someone will start sending us tiny wall-hanging crucifixes in bulk, and expect to see them hung up during their next visit.

There are a lot of things about her side of the family that it's best not to tell my dad's half of the family about.

First of all, those aren't hippies.

They're environmentalists.

Hippies are awesome sexy drug addicts that make all sorts of neat stuff out of hemp.

Environmentalists are nosy little busy-bodies with nothing better to do than make computers that run on tree bark.

I understand the confusion.



Second, I come from a perfectly stereotypical Irish-Catholic family.

They all think it's Jesus coming.

And they all think they're going to hell, anyway.

So instead of screaming and running, they're all going to get drunk during the apocalypse.



Also, I'm kind of wondering how they figure that it's Jesus.

The Mayan calender ends on that day, foreshadowing the end of the world, right?

I'm pretty sure Mayans hadn't even heard of Christianity/Catholicism back when they made the calender.

So they didn't believe in Jesus, anyway.
