Location of PhuketOn Sunday 16 September 2007, One-Two-GO Airlines Flight 269 crashed after hitting the runway heavily while attempting to land in strong winds and heavy rain at Phuket International Airport. The McDonnell Douglas MD-82, which departed from Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport at 3.30am Eastern Time, slid off the runway and split into two after hitting a tree.[1][2] 130 people were on board. BBC News has reported "at least 87 dead".[3]

The crash occurred in the Thai resort of Phuket. Two passengers have reportedly been discharged from hospital after suffering only minor injuries.[citation needed]

According to Channel NewsAsia, air traffic controllers at the airport had allowed the pilots to abort the landing moments before touchdown. However, the "plane smashed onto the runway, careered into an embankment and broke in two." 23-year-old Parinyawich Chusaeng, who survived the crash on flight 269, told AFP:[4]

"The plane just dropped really fast and then jerked back up. The right wing hit a tree and then the plane hit the ground...The people all around me were burning. Some on the floor and some standing, and they were on fire."

Chaisak Angsuwan, director general of the Air Transport Authority of Thailand said:[5]

The visibility was poor as the pilot attempted to land. He decided to make a go-around but the plane lost balance and crashed. It was torn into two parts.

A witness, William Harding, said:[6]

The inside (of the plane) was totally on fire and about five minutes of burning, there was a small explosion that blew off top of the plane.

The crash represents Thailand's deadliest aviation accident since Thai Airways Flight 261 which crashed in 1998, killing 101 people attempting to land at the southern resort of Surat Thani.[3]

The Bangkok Post website released a passenger manifest on 16 September 2007.[7]

The known survivors were: 14 Thai, 8 British, 4 German, 3 Iranian, 3 Irish, 2 Swedish, 1 Australian, 1 Austrian, 1 Dutch, and 1 Italian.[6]

A Canadian woman from British Columbia also survived the crash [8]
