The Hunger Games

Mothers who care for their children would do anything for them. Sisters that act like best friends are always there for one another if one is in need. All these relate to the theme of the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The theme of the book is sacrifice for those you love. The main character, Katniss Everdeen, carries out this theme.
Katniss lives in District 12 that is located in a country of Panem which has a Capital and 13 districts. When the districts rebelled against the Capital, District 13 was demolished, and the Hunger Games were created to confirm the 12 districts that the Capital controls all. The Hunger Games is a televised event where a boy and a girl between the ages 12 and 18 from every district are chosen to fight to the death. On the day of the reaping, or the day when the names of the boy and girl are chosen, Prim, Katniss’s 12 year old sister, gets her name chosen. Katniss didn’t want her sister to suffer, so she volunteered to replace her knowing that she could be killed in this event. After the ceremony, Katniss and the boy that got selected, Peeta, rode on a train to the Capital, the area where the Hunger Games are held. Once the tributes arrive to the Capital, they are gorged with exquisite food and are prepared for interviews and training for the actual game. When the training is over, the tributes get scored by the Gamemakers of the Hunger Games on how well their techniques are on a scale of 1-12. Surprisingly Katniss scores the highest which causes the other tributes to despise her even more. At the last interview before the games start, Peeta declares his love for Katniss to all of Panem. The Hunger Games have started and Peeta and Katniss managed to survive the first day. Throughout the game, Katniss teams up with a little girl from District 11, Rue. One day, Katniss hears Rue scream for help and runs through the forest in search to find her knowing that it could attract other tributes, but she was too late. Rue was speared through the stomach by a boy from tribute 3, whom Katniss kills with an arrow. Before Rue passes away, Katniss promises to win the game for both of them. Then one night, thanks to Peeta’s declared love, a new rule was created that both the tributes from the same districts can win the games as a pair. Katniss immediately searches for Peeta. When she finds Peeta, she discovers that he is badly wounded and has a fever. Even thought she knows Peeta is weak, Katniss does anything she can to save him from dying. She knows that the audience is crazy about the declaration of love, so she pretends to love Peeta so that sponsors would send gifts in to help with Peeta’s injury. In the end, both Katniss and Peeta win the Hunger Games safely.
I personally enjoyed this book a great deal. This book was very detailed and exciting. On a scale of 1-12, I would rate it an 11.5. I didn’t rate this as a 12 because the ending was a bit sad how Peeta found out that Katniss was pretending to love him to win the game. Other than that, I wasn’t able to stop reading the book. It was able to catch my attention and guide me through the end. I would recommend this for anybody ages 12 – 15.
For my project I did a diagram that resembles to pacman. The bow and arrows are what Katniss uses to defeat the enemies, the bread represents Peeta, the cheese represents Prim, and the heart represents Katniss’s promise with Rue. Each dot represents each step closer to save a certain person. My diagram represents the theme because Katniss is risking her life against Starvation, Death, Tributes, and the Capital to save Peeta, Prim, and Rue.
Overall, this book had excitement, action, romance, and sad moments. It also teaches us that not to always think about yourself but to care and sacrifice for others also even if it means sacrificing your own life.
