UPDATE: Some hackers have used my banners to link to a phishing or password grabbing site. They have been posting them in the forums and sending them through PMs. My banners DO NOT use tinyurl in the link. They link directly to my petition. (http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum///t.39234787) If you see one of my banners with a tinyurl link, DO NOT CLICK ON IT. If you were brought here by a banner linking through tinyurl, immediately change your password, log out, and then log back in.
UPDATE: I have recieved several threats from hackers due to this petition. There is a forum on a hacking website dedicated to my demise eek . Gaia take note: This idea is scaring hackers, because it would make it MUCH harder for them to hack accounts. Due to all of this, I have moved all my valuable items onto mules and this account is no longer my main. When the day comes that Gaia implements either this feature or another better security feature, I will be able to move my items back on this account without fear. So if you want your items to be safe, SIGN THIS PETITION! And rate it a thumbs up! Together we can stop the hackers and the scammers!
Every time I go in the forums I see people who have been hacked or scammed out of items. Maybe it's even happened to you. I personally feel a little scared it might happen to me someday, even though I take every precaution I can.
Hackers and scammers must be stopped. However, Gaia simply doesn't have enough mods to handle all the reports and catch the instigators before they do any more harm. We need more protection in our accounts.
So what about this idea? In order to keep an item safe, you could "padlock" it. Putting a padlock on an item would temporarily change its status to a non-tradable, unsellable, non-giftable item. You could still equip and unequip the item, but you could not sell it, trade it, or give it away. The padlock status would last for a short period of time, say a month, and then you would be given the option to renew it again. If you now wanted to sell the item, you would just not renew it and the item would go back to normal. Padlocks would be free, and you could use as many as you like. You should not have to pay gold for security against hackers and scammers.
The only person who would be able to remove the Padlock before the month was up would be a member of the Gaia staff (only in cases of items bought with botted gold, etc. You could not PM a mod and ask them to unlock it for you) A user COULD NOT remove a padlock from an item. The item would be locked for the entire month. This idea is actually feasible from a programming point of view, it can be done. See the quote below:
Ganon Firenight
Well...
If they implemented this, they would have to add a variable to every item. That's really not a lot, especially if it's just a boolean variable (a 1 or a 0, meaning TRUE or FALSE or ON or OFF, respectively). Every item would get a 0, because initially, nothing would be padlocked.
Then, when someone padlocked an item, the boolean variable related to that item would be changed to a 1. A 1 doesn't take up any more or less memory than a 0. They might need a little more memory-- I doubt they're using all the memory they have now, though-- to store these variables, but it would be negligent, and the act of padlocking an item would not change the amount of memory a person is using.
Thank you Ganon Firenight for the technical info 4laugh
Examples of how this would work:
A button would be added next to the organize inventory that would give you the option to Padlock items.

Once you clicked on the button, you would be led to a page simliar to your wishlist (Thank you Sugar and Vice for the idea!):

You would then be lead to a page confirming which items you were padlocking (to help prevent accidentely padlocking something you wished to sell) Thank you very much Sugar and Vice for the edit!:

Finally, after Padlocking whichever items you wished you would be returned to your inventory. Padlocked items would now have a little padlock up in the corner biggrin .

Edit: An idea for renewing padlocks:

This is a great idea. I definitely sign.
The only thing I wonder about is how the renew part of the feature would work without being incredibly annoying. Imagine if you had padlocked hundreds or maybe thousands of items on different dates, causing many, many renew messages to pop up every day following the expiration of the first item's month. sweatdrop

Yes...that would be REALLY annoying. The idea I have for the renew feature is that your monthly renewal date would be the day of the month when you first put the padlock on the item. Say if you first padlocked on the 14th, they all would be up on the 14th from that day onward. Supossedly that would be easier to code, and I know it would be easier to remember. Two days before that date, you would be sent a PM saying something like"Reminder: Your Padlocks will expire in two days" The PM would then have a list of everything you have padlocked. There would be two links at the bottom, one saying something like "Padlock everything for another month" (that would make it easier for people who have lots of things), another something like "Choose which items to renew" (which would bring you to your padlock page, and you could select which items to renew. However, you would still have to wait until your unpadlocking date to sell the items you didn't renew).
