1. Introduction

Who am I?


I'm Jais, a.k.a. Hekiko, and I've been on Gaia sporadically since 2003. I'm pretty much here to dress up and talk about items and avatars. Other than that, I'm a daily artist, a fanfic writer, a wife to my missus, a cat mom to an old tortie, and an occasional fan of manga and video games.

Why a new thread?


The previous thread is about 5 years old and the format doesn't really fit with how I do avatars anymore. I figure getting this closet better organized and fit with how I make avis is probably better for me in the long run. All of this should cover the current year, with the complete versions archived in a guild forum. After the first set of posts, this will probably serve as an avatar diary, where I occasionally post updates.

How do I make avis?


I make a lot of avis and do a lot of item based challenges. It started with a 100 avatar challenge back in 2013 and then extended into doing at least three poses for each Monthly Collectible and every pose for every Evolving item. I focus a lot on quantity rather than fussing around with perfectionism, and it's rare that I'll do too much tweaking once something is saved. My favorite thing is seeing avatars in sets, and a lot of my projects are made to feel most satisfying as seeing a group of them all together.

3. Evolving Items

Probably the biggest proportion of avatars are made for the Every Evolving Item challenge, which I started back in 2013, and am still only 20% done with. My current rotation is one generation of 3 regular evolving items and one rapid evolving item. Because it started way back in 2013, I love the chronological thread for how it shows my avatar progress (and occasional regress) over time.

Color Scheming

Combining color schemes is one of my favorite strategies for making avatars that feel cohesive without getting too matchy-matchy, and then someone (tinkaton) made a color scheme generator that pulls up random color combos. I recently discovered there was a 3 color version of the scheme, which is 100% changing how I do these going forward. The actual Guild thread also has me reviewing each combo for how well I think the colors work together and how easy or fun it was to build an avatar. 7. Ghosts

I love playing around in people's inventories, and I love seeing what people come up with when they play around in mine. I don't get to do either too often, but just in case, here's a post.

Sometimes, if a ghosted avatar really catches my attention, I'll remake it. Since I don't feel comfortable counting an avatar someone completely designed for me as part of my lookbook, the remakes are a way of taking the base of a look I find interesting and re-mixing it into something Heki-style.
