Everyone knows there's no such thing as monsters. The doors slam because of a sudden draft, the shadows outside your window at night are just the trees shaking in the wind, the shrieks and screams after dark are a couple of neighbourhood cats, you tripped over your own shoelaces - don't try to tell me you were pushed. You've had that drummed into you for years. This is the real world, buddy, and you can take your superstitions up the road.

At least, that was the way it was sold. Until this morning, you five perfectly normal humans never stepped foot outside the real world. As anything else knows, that was a very smart and sensible thing to do. The other dimensions are not for humans – any rat can tell you that. There's nothing but trouble to be had by walking. But, humans aren't known for walking through... Well, they just aren't known for walking at all, least of all through Shadow. Not that that's any comfort to you now. No one can hear you, no one notices when you touch them, your friends and family have already forgotten that you exist. You're not in Kansas anymore. You're not going to find a yellow brick road to show you the way home. You just better know these streets better than anything else here, because if you only memorised the route from home to work, the dinner bell's going to start ringing over your head.

Keep your wits about you, know your exits, and don't talk to strangers. Because what every knows is that no one knows how long you're going to be here.

                                  ------

Everything knows that humans shouldn't be in Shadow. Some things born in Shadow aren't meant to be in Shadow – you've all seen those first hand. Humans, the things that gave birth to you, letting their dreams and nightmares run wild, forgot all about you and look where you are now. This world in the corner of their eye, that place where human's think they could see you if they just turned fast enough, that's your own world. It's nice little dimension just the way it is, the way the shadows have been running it for millennia. Humans are just a fact of life that you have to live around – them in the real world and you in Shadow with as little contact as possible. But there are definitely five humans wandering through your corner of existence. That smell that you haven't smelt since you lived in your creator's dreams and nightmares is your earliest memory, and you shadows have never been more tantalised by that underlying fear. These aren't the first five to pass into Shadow – oh no – one human gets through every twenty years, but these are the first you've ever seen.

Luckily for the unfortunate five and unluckily for you, there is a protocol for such things. Just as the tourists were starting to wonder why no one could see them, why the dogs were barking in a maddened panic like they knew something was very wrong, or why there were some strangely dressed people around, you were there to set them straight. That's the way it's supposed to work in Shadow; every tourist gets a guide, and you've drawn the short straw. Completing your punishment is the smart and sensible thing to do, and you lot aren't know well for either.

You've finished step one: get your tourist to the Council, the people who can explain what's going on. That was the easy part, now it's time to deal with all the other shadows who can turn on a dime without warning. You better keep your tourist alive if you want to survive your punishment. And remember: they're not allowed to be your dessert either. No matter how sweet the smell. No matter how tender the meat.

No human is safe in Shadow. Once their unvanquished terrors or unthanked heroes drift out of Wonder into Shadow, the only thing keeping them on a leash is the threshold, and that thin barrier has been fracturing. This in-between realm keeps the former dreams and nightmares of Shadow as human as possible when they aren't in true form, and fights back against any interference with the real world – be that anything from opening a locked door to dragging something living into Shadow. As long as it is there, humans can hide behind their motion sensor doors without need worry. It keeps humans safe from the anarchy of Shadow, and that's a lot to be thankful for.

For thousands of years, Shadow has been overrun by its namesake. No former dream lasts long in this gladiators' arena. There's only one thing to do here: kill. Creatures are pigeonholed by race and background, and if they don't meet their expectations or surpass them, they'll be the first to go. The bottom feeders never last more than two years in Shadow. The scavengers double their odds. The biggest, baddest apex predators – those at the top of the food chain – have never reached past eight. They aren't food but a prize, and that makes their death much more valuable. A dead grande dragon buys prestige, immunity from those who would never have challenged one. Those consumers in the middle are the safest, on average lasting eighteen years and holding the record the oldest creature at twenty-five.

As ruthless as most of the shadows may seem, there is an undercurrent of superstitions. All creatures are known by their surname – a first name is considered sacred and is said to hold a creature's freewill. To reveal it is to lose freewill. Each race is supposedly meant to have a safe home. If something doesn't take residence in their safe home – for example, a creature who can fly not living on a rooftop – they will disturb the nature of prestige for their race and must be killed. The Code, established by the Council, is designed to keep the balance between the real world and Shadow because they fear that something terrible will happen if it is broken – maybe not enough to stop the rife corruption through the ranks, but they do care. If someone is caught breaching a code, a punishment is enforced, designed to be so degrading as to strip a creature of all their prestige. If the punishment is completed, the Council considers the debt repaid; if the duty is unfulfilled, the Council execute the culprit. With no prestige, however, the culprit will die within days anyway.

They're long, they're sometimes complicated, but these rules are here so we're all on the same page in how this RP is going to work. If you've read the previous two posts, I'm pretty sure you'll find your way through this one. Subsequent posts have extra information that can be read at leisure throughout the course of the RP.

                                  GENERAL
As though it isn't obvious: Respect your fellow roleplayer. Chat to people in the OOC, discuss plot ideas with everyone else and stay active. If the OOC dies, the RP is as good as dead too, so make sure you're on the ball because otherwise your character will be turned into an NPC or eaten. Other than that, you can have your characters be politically incorrect and such as long as it's within TOS standards. This isn't a romance RP in any way shape or form but an action drama, so I expect violence and swearing, not needless sex. Elaborate posting layouts to go along with the post are not required and over-elaborate posting layouts are frowned upon so don't have a dozen pictures and sparkling text. This RP was designed to work with all screen sizes and I would appreciate if you made any layout with that in mind, meaning that I don't really want to see any image or collection of images that are more than 750px across. Only requirements are make sure the font is no smaller than 11 for the body of the text and maintain standard text alignment. If you have any queries, leave a message in the OOC or send me a PM.

                                  'LITERACY'
This was created as a lazy literate roleplay. Know the difference between its and it's, and apart from a part, and so forth. The amount I would want you to post is at least 300 words. If you can't meet that requirement for any reason, chat with some other players in the OOC for ideas or use the NPCs. There is more than enough room to send this roleplay in whichever direction people would like, so mutually agreed timeskips may help you out as well. To keep things moving, try to post as soon as possible after you have a post to respond to. I will not enforce a particular schedule for posting because I know work or school can sap the strength to want to post on some days. I'll send you a reminder if I think we need an update from you. Two reminders with no word back and your character is in jeopardy.

                                  RESERVES & PROFILES
Reserves are very simple. As I will need to put all the details into an image anyway, there's no fancy layout to fill out or fiddly coding to worry about. Just stick it in the plain form provided and you're set. The image can be no smaller than 280x325 but it can be bigger. It doesn't have to be in greyscale, it'll end up that way when I'm finished with it anyway. Make sure the person you're using for your character looks the part, though. As long as the actor/model isn't used all over Gaia, it can be anyone you want. Once Captain Mantis and I have discussed your character, you'll get the word of whether you're in or out.

The profiles are where things start to get a bit more lively. Do your best with it. I'm not setting a deadline for when I will want them after reserves, but I will start getting on your back about it after a week if I haven't heard any updates. I will be more critical of decisions as to guides than tourists because their roles are very important in the scheme of things. I also don't want characters who are too alike, so I'll reject anything that is too similar to an existing character. At this stage people playing shadows or lights will need a picture of their creature (or reuse the one from their race profile). The image must either be a high quality realistic graphic or a photomanipulation.

                                  SETTING
Take note that this is not set in America. Brighton is a fictitious city in a fictitious Anglo-Saxon Western European country. That isn't to say it doesn't have a diversity of cultures, but football means football, not American football; Autumn is autumn, not fall – keep those two in mind.

Some of you may be able to identify the places from the photographs. If you do, you can add in some of the details into your post, for example the inside of Stephansdom. The places were generally selected in their entirety but not shown to allow creative licence for those who have never been there (except for Almonte which should have been a larger Stadtpark). Otherwise, feel free to build your own cultures in, your own streets, neighbourhoods, places of note. Let me know whether you want to add another major location in for the setting post. If you are going to provide the picture, make sure it has a creative commons licence. Also, I won't be accepting new districts as the existing four are next to each other and big enough for the needs of the RP.

                                  SHADOWS & LIGHTS
Remember to keep to the descriptions of each role. Age on entry to Shadow is entirely dependent on their creator, so they can be in their eighties and only 1 Shadow year old, however there are no creatures under the age of sixteen. Once they are in Shadow, they age normally, so 1 real world year = 1 year of ageing. Therefore, at the youngest, something that has been in Shadow for 10 years is 26. Young things are less chewy, so it's best that they establish themselves quickly or else become someone's dessert.

For new races, a race form must be included with the reserves. It should be at least in part inspired by the myth of the creature chosen. For something that doesn't have a strong existing mythological basis, you are free to create your own standards for the race. The description should focus on what the race is known for, distinctive parts of their appearance, their general mannerisms, how they are perceived in Shadow, and what they taste like. Any magic will be examined on a case by case basis but there are only a few exceptions I'll let go through. Just don't forget to add the race's flavour because everything needs to eat to survive, and the only food around is another shadow or light because things from the real world have no taste or nutrients for these nasty critters.

This motley crew is a sight to see. Five tourists with five guides. None of them are suited for what they have gotten themselves into. Guides can be replaced, but tourists are not a revolving door service, so try not to ditch if you're picking a human.

The main NPCs in our little play. All the characters know these mobs one way or another. Not all guides have had interactions with the Hunters, but they've heard about their exploits down the grapevine. It would be hard to miss the massacre that partnership has wrought.

For ease of reference if you forget anything, or some information that didn't belong anywhere else, you can consult this list for the jargon in Shadow. If you use something else, I'm not going to hassle you about it, but these are supposed to be part of the established and common lexicon.

                                  WORLD TERMS
Blockers: Streets or areas that are too busy to walk through while in Shadow. A shadow or light in human form would be bulldozed over if walking against heavy traffic. With a large true form they would be capable of barging through, but this is generally frowned upon. The only way to safely go through blockers against the flow is to walk through to the threshold so humans are more likely to move around them.

Coats: The clothes a shadow or light wears when in human form. They share the same colours as their true form making them stand out from real humans. The type of outfits generally tends to reflect some aspect of their creator, such as status, dress sense or a favourite piece of clothing. One part of the coats is taken off to change into human form and put back on to return to true form.

The Code: A set of laws that govern the creatures of Shadow to ensure their world does not crash into the real world. Treated seriously by most in Shadow because any breach is punished by death. The four codes are:
                                  1) Never tell a human you are from Shadow.
                                  2) Never use your true form during the day.
                                  3) Never show your true form to a human.
                                  4) Never kill a human.

Lights: Dreams that have moved across to Shadow. Etymology from the tendency to be creatures that faired better during the day than at night.

Prestige: The system of hierarchy in Shadow. Each creature has a certain amount of prestige, gaining more from each kill. The more prestige a creature has, the safer they are from those who have less prestige. Prestige is decreased through showing compassion (lights do not receive a penalty as they were created with a steep penalty). It is a fluid concept since no two shadows share the same opinion on how much prestige any one kill is worth. The safest way to ensure survival is to kill any apex predator possible, and do it again and again.

The real world: Used to describe the dimension where humans exist. Originally used with sarcasm, it has now become an accepted term. Most creatures from Shadow use the 'real world' exclusively and do not know any other name.

Shadow: The dimension shadows have laid claim to. From the point of entering Shadow, all dreams and nightmares age naturally every year and can make their own decisions based on how their creator last envisioned them.

Shadows: Nightmares that have moved across to Shadow. Etymology from their tendency to only be seen in the real world as a shadow when in their natural form.

The Threshold: The space that divides Shadow from the real world. Creatures from Shadow can cross into the threshold at will, however, they are ignored by humans unless if they initiate the interaction. The greater the will and exposure to threshold of something from Shadow, the more likely they are to overcome some of threshold's limitations. Common animals such as rats, pigeons and dogs live in the threshold and therefore can experience both worlds as though they existed naturally in both. Cats live in the real world because thought Shadow below them.

Walking: The process of moving between dimensions. Accidental walkers are sometimes nicknamed tourists. Anything that spend more time walking than in their own dimension slowly becomes more capable of interaction with the other dimension. Shadows or lights who spend more time in threshold than Shadow eventually develop a stronger presence in the real world, gradually breaking the threshold's will to fight against them. Nicknamed passengers, these creatures are rare due to little attraction to enter threshold for extended periods of time.

Wonder: The dimension that exists within a creator's mind. It is thought that all of Wonder is connected but it has never been proved. All dreams and nightmares are originally formed here. They do not have free will and are instead manipulated by their creator into whatever their subconscious dictates. All shadows and lights believe that they were fully in control of themselves at this point.

                                  PEOPLE OF NOTE
Creators: The child that imagined the nightmare or dream. There are older creators, but when unwavering belief in 'supernatural' is lost, a human is incapable of creating a dream or nightmare defined enough to enter Shadow. Creators are also capable of changing nightmares to dreams and dreams to nightmares. Most lights that survive longer in Shadow started off as nightmares when their creators first imagined them.

The Council: A group of creatures from their respective area in Shadow that have a stronger tendency to enforce and follow orders than others. They are responsible for upholding the Code and act as judge, jury, executioner. Everyone knows their local councillors.

Frederick Angel: Hero of Brighton's past, this mamlambo light from the 1600s was one of the last Shadow-born creatures in history to be a full passenger. He fought in the Four-Year War to stop invaders from taking over Brighton but died a week before the end of the war during a fight with a shadow. He is well known as a military captain by Brighton's human locals due to many acts of bravery, but little breath is wasted on him in Shadow history.

The Hunters: A group of the most prestigious shadows in Shadow. They have achieved their success by being one of the first shadows to have banded together, taking down more apex predators than anyone else in living memory. The apex predators are months away from being the first of their kind to ever live past eight years. Don't discredit the harpy, she's the first of her kind to have the gut instincts of an apex predator instead of a scavenger, and as much as that can put her in danger, you don't want to find her friends behind her.

Messengers: The Council uses the animals that live in the threshold as messengers. The hierarchy in order of messengers is: cockroach, pigeon, rat, lizard, dog. Taking orders from a cockroach reduces prestige.

The Terrible Tenor: A nandi bear that lived in the mid-1800s and terrorised the theatre going population of Brighton for years. Folklore equal to Jack the Ripper in human history and a legend against getting away with breaking the fourth code in Shadow's history.

                                  FOOD CHAIN
Apex predators: Creatures who are created to survive a place like Shadow. At peak form they can pick off most consumers as easily as bottom feeders. Their status is their own worse enemy as they are more likely to be hunted down by those looking for protection from other creatures.

Consumers: Creatures in the middle of the food chain without particular distinction. Applicable to the majority of Shadow. They come in all different shapes and sizes and strengths but don't fall into the other categories.

Scavengers: Creatures who survive by working together and eating the leftovers from other kills. They are treated only slightly better than bottom feeders. Teamwork is the primary thing that helps keep them alive.

Bottom Feeders: Creatures who are generally non-violent and have few predatory skills to survive Shadow. They are good for the other creatures who need something easy to kill and tasty after killing something stronger and inedible.

A place to learn all about your neighbours and competition. These are a sample of the kinds of creatures that have sprouted up in Shadow. Some of them are as common as dirt, others won't appear for generations, all that matters is that none of them are to be trusted.

      APEX PREDATORS

          User Image
                                      tab BAKU
                                      Cast: Sally Pierce
There's nothing wrong with being a baku. There are all the privileges of being a light with the killing power of a shadow, even when there is no evidence that there has ever been a baku shadow. It is a very careful balance created by children who wanted their worst nightmares dealt with cleanly. These goodie-two-shoes started as a bit of joke. With an elephant’s head, tusks, and trunk, the body of a cat or tapir and the average size of 120cm (3'11") from head to tail, it's not intimidating in anyone's books, and definitely not any of the five that were ever written in Shadow. A natural temperament to humans that could make them as placid as an elderly family pet, their rivalry against all nightmares only puts a small dent in their high spirits and does little to interrupt their other favourite pastime: stealing socks.

Their power doesn't come from their stature or good nature, but the abilities their creators gave them. Their trunk is their biggest asset, capable of differentiating smells from over a kilometre away, extending enough to wrap around something it's own size, and crushing through a dragon's scales. Small and deadly but an edible reward, tasting much like salted cardboard with a good soaking of lemon juice.

                                      tab GRANDE DRAGON
                                      Cast: Langley Aemilius
It's no mean feat to confuse a grande dragon – in the real world known as wyvrens – with any other dragon. To not notice that it doesn't have arms, only wings, that it is at least 600cm (19'8") with a wingspan of up to 2000cm (64'7.5") and that it rarely runs out of firepower is a sure fire method of being eaten by one. These hungry beasts rule the skies. The tallest skyscrapers are almost exclusively dedicated to this mob. Their fiery temper is as obvious as their race because few others can go from quietly arrogant to flaming fury in seconds. Anything they eat is either burnt around the edges or so burnt the race of the snack would only be identifiable through their dental records. No consumer challenges a healthy grande dragon.

Despite being one of the most prestigious creatures to kill in Shadow, they're not all death and gloom. They are jealous and it can do well to divert them with jealousy over a raging appetite. Pointing them in the direction of someone else in Shadow with a better home or an abundance of treasure may be enough to spare your life. With the flavour, texture and toughness of burnt leather boots, distracting them and killing them may be the best option of getting them out of the way – eating them is only for the truly starved.

                                      tab GRYPHON
                                      Cast: Billy Butcher, Wesley Ulysses
Only recently having regained apex predator status in Brighton thanks to the latest generation, this race has once again proven that it is more than a delicious snack that hordes anything that shines. For fifteen years, the gryphons of Brighton had slipped to consumers after dozens of lights surfaced with little predatory skill and none of the bloodlust of their shadow cousins. The last six years has seen a dramatic reduction in light numbers, meaning they are no longer regarded as glamourised chicken marinated in jalapeño chilies. Their legendary arrogance is once again almost well deserved.

Unlike the conventional gryphons through artworks in the real world, these gryphons are only identifiable by having the head of a bird and the body of a quadruped. The big cat-eagle crosses are known for their strength, the wolf-falcon crosses for their speed, horse-raven for endurance, and countless more. Escaping from these killers isn't easy. They hunt for fun and they hunt for food. They leave injured prey close to death for hours and come back to finish the job when they are ready. They may not be able to take on a grande dragon, but they have claimed the rooftops that the dragons haven't.

                                      tab MAMLAMBO
                                      Cast: Fredrick Angel
This rarity can clear out all other shadows in the Birrie within three years. There is no creature that knows how to stop this beast in the water. Which, to the relief of many shadows and lights, isn't a half bad thing considering that most creatures in Brighton don't live in the Birrie. Clocking in at an average of 730cm (23'11.5"), it is best to wait until it is on land to take care of it. Its fish tail makes it fast in water, but stumpy horse legs on its horse body are only giving its predators a favour. The snake's head is the thing to watch out for while it's on land. Poisonous fangs can paralyse in seconds, and then it will take its sweet time to crack open its victim's skull and have a feast on what's inside.

This terror of the water is more than a little off. There is nothing to prove they actually are as cruel as their hunting methods. The consensus in Shadow is that they hunt exclusively to feed their appetite, unlike every other creature. There is no discernible difference between shadows and lights. Lights try to clean up any mess they find in the Birrie that would disrupt a future hunt, however, more than a few shadows have been noticed to do the same thing. Avoid it's teeth, avoid the water, and staying alive around the Mamlambo should be a walk in the park. If you can stomach the taste and texture of used motor oil, this snack can keep you fed for weeks.

                                      tab WENDIGO
                                      Cast: Ruff Ruru
Cannibals sound unfriendly at the best of time, so cannibals in Shadow have just gone up another level in unfriendly. These half-eaten bipeds with cervine faces eat themselves and each other without a moment's hesitation. It's a saving grace that they don't need to eat often and sleep for a day after a feast because they are brutal. Capable of imitating the sounds of other creatures flawlessly, they will cry out like a wounded bottom feeder to attract others into their trap. By the time you've started heading to investigate it's already too late because, even though they are on two feet and 220cm (7'2.5") tall, they are bloody fast. Strength is the best way to get away, because there's little chance of outrunning a wendigo.

Not many creatures in Brighton know anything else about them since they have only started appearing in the last century, but they have made a lasting impression with the few who have popped up since. Nothing less than an apex predator has ever killed one, and whenever there have been two at the same time, it was never for very long. The only known method for killing them is to break their neck or tear them apart because they seem impervious to everything else. Most shadows will relish in the taste of rotting pork if they've taken down a wendigo. They probably will never have to again – and everything's thankful for that.

These ugly boys and girls are a pest or one of your biggest threats depending on which side of the food chain you stand on. They aren't like other creatures; they have no survival instinct. Danger is a concept they do not understand – most believe they will never die. They chew on bricks, mortar, metal, whatever they can get their hands on when they don't have anything with a heartbeat to hunt down and kill. Their rows of jagged teeth make short work of their snacks and the furnace in their bellies melt everything that goes in. The only thing on their minds is mischief and carnage. Shadow is the perfect place for these beasts, and their attitude on something that could do more damage would be terrifying.

Bigger creatures can crush these bony critters in one blow, snapping most of the bones in their small, emaciated bodies. At a maximum height of 170cm (5'7"), they are only intimidating in appearance, not height. Unfortunately for anyone who has to deal with them, they aren't edible without teeth to match theirs. Once the furnace goes out in their belly, they turn to stone and that's the end of their happy lives.

Child snatchers are not very nice people, so it's only natural that nachtkrapps know a thing or two about not being very nice. They're much better adapted to Wonder than they ever could be to Shadow, and yet, they still have enough bite to their bark to be treated with some deal of respect from other creatures. These overgrown ravens, the size of a ten year old child, are fiendishly quiet. Their red masks are like steel and capable of slashing and stabbing anything that gets near. Oh yes, nachtkrapps were only ever designed to scare little kids back into bed.

Contrary to basic Shadow logic, these birds prefer order to chaos. They like things going their way and can't stand to have a mess. Once they are done slaughtering their meal, they will neatly stack the remains into a pile on the side of the road so no one will trip over them. Anything that offends their delicate sensibilities opens themselves up to a lecturing. This is perhaps the best time to strike at them as their guard is down. The mask is entirely inedible, however, the rest of them tastes like cream that has been left out in the sun too long.

It is best to get rid of this misconception upfront: as beautiful as their human forms usually are, the harpy true form is vile. Harpies are hags with sagging tits, leathery skin that's pulled too tight on their bones, wings for arms, all vulture from the waist down and 150cm (4'11") tall. Hunting in committees, they yell at each other over a snack if they manage to take one down. They do not mourn the loss of a fallen colleague, but they won't eat it either. To them, the taste of cough medicine doesn't go down so well. Not every hunt is successful, and not everyone has something to eat at the end, but they are not cannibals.

There is no getting snuck up on by a harpy – they do not understand quiet. Their best offence is irritating other creatures to death. That's not to say they can't be deadly – they can be, especially in a committee – but they are more likely to badger and run when they are on their own. Working creatures up into a frenzy so they aren't thinking straight is part of their ploy to lower their prey's defences. It's a shame that that also makes the prey more likely to eat them.

                                      Cast: Decker Bog
Most things do not dwell too long on centaurs. If it wasn't for Bog and his position as a Councillor, they would never receive any real mention. The centaurs are not like the ones people know in the real world. They are not human from the waist up and horse from the waist down. The only part of them that is human at all is their torso. Their natural tendency is to be a herbivore, but that doesn't stop their shod hooves from trampling creatures in their way or grinding away on bones. It's just that they don't do it as well as most other things in Shadow and they don't know how to do it very effectively.

Most are dumb as a doorknob and timid as any wild horse. Their creators put only as much thought into them as they had to so they were scary enough to get a fright but not enough to really wet the bed. A lot of them graze in Almonte Park, picking up leftovers from meals that other creatures have spat out. They're crafty with their hands, though. If you want something made, they're the people to go too. They will want a favour in return – and favours can be lethal.

Welcome to Brighton, ladies and gentlemen. Just because you tourists may have grown up in these districts, have lived in these streets for so many generations that the water of the Birrie River flows through your veins as strongly as it does through the middle of the city, doesn't mean you know this town – not like this. Shadow has a lot to say for itself when it comes down to your busy home.

A park large enough for visitors to get lost in, the Almonte is a corner of green wilderness in the centre of the concrete jungle. Shadows and lights are found here at all times of day, more than a few live here, and it's a godsend to those forest creatures out of their element. The statues that dot the park are a trip through Brighton's extensive past. One of the more educated creatures would be able to find the Brighton hero who was never actually human.

The biggest culture museum in this corner of the country. Its world class displays of myths and legends and the creatures that went bump in the night can take your breath away, but it has never gained the traction from the public that it deserves. The free entry rarely attracts more visitors than the die hard fanatics, making it the perfect place for shadows and lights to keep out of the way in daylight hours while checking up on their competition.

Everything in Shadow knows how to get to King's Court and everyone who lives in Brighton's real world knows King's Court. With the status of the oldest functioning court in the country in the real world, its Shadow status has the more sinister connotation of being where the Councillors pass judgement. Only matters of state are dealt with here, leaving plenty of empty courtrooms for the Councillors to take over when their human counterparts are waiting for a new case.

No one goes here. Not humans, not shadows or lights. Said to be haunted by those in the real world after a series of murders dubbed the 'Terrible Tenor Murders', it has become an execution hall in Shadow when a nandi bear was found to be behind the fourteen murders across three years. The stage is littered with the bones of over a century of execution. It's also the only safe house for tourists that the Council has.

This city within a city is the single part of Brighton that the creatures of Shadow have built themselves. While the fliers have the city's rooftops to call home, and the forest lovers claim Almonte Park where they can sleep uninterrupted, the groundbound creatures who don't want to sleep out in the sun have created their homes in the centre of Brighton's sewer system. Centuries of work have gone into the complex maze of today – not that any human has ever seen it.

A stadium named after the famous footballer, Roger Griffon, and a godsend to Brighton's prestige hungry. Ever since it was built seventy years ago, the gryphon population has skyrocketed. For years it seemed as though for every gryphon that was killed there were two more to take its place – and it made for easy pickings when most were righteous lights. The last few years have been unkind to the local football club with their ranking taking a tumble and reducing gryphon numbers, but Brighton remains one of the best cities in the world for extensive gryphon populations.

St John's has been a place of sanctuary to the people of Brighton since it was built. There are stories told in the real world of something holy looking over this place. Anyone in Shadow knows there is nothing safe about this place of worship. The colony of Gargoyles that live in the rafters kill each other for a good spot to sleep if the mood takes them, let alone something who comes into their nest uninvited.

This iconic half-mile footbridge across the widest part of the Birrie River is a Brighton must see. A blocker during the day, it is almost deserted by the middle of the night. A cowboy showdown is nothing compared to what goes on here after dark.

This post will keep you updated on what's going on in the world. The progress of the main cast will be found here as well as some updates from The Hunters so you know how close they are to catching up with you. Captain Mantis is primarily in charge of our antagonists, so send any ideas you would like to incorporate into the story to her if they are better kept under wraps, otherwise leave a message in the OOC. Checking up on the Hunter's activities isn't necessary, but if you want something to read while the RP is in a lull, there's nowhere better to start.

                                  THE CAST
                                  Opening – Introduction
Everyone has finally come together, odd introductions have been had between the tourists, little has been said between the guides. The Councillors have explained the world of Shadow to the humans as best as they can, as well as the role of their guides. Some tourists haven't taken a shine to the creatures in charge of protecting them, but that can't be helped with the attitude of the shadows. It's now up to the guides to figure out how to get them through the streets to the Opera House. The sun has gone – the biggest protection they had. Dusk is approaching and the humans are about to get a taste of what it really means in Shadow. Chins up, everyone.
