Nikoths/Etkezym
Nikoths, or as it is known to its residents, Etkezym, is a near-Earth variant planet, the third in its system around a star nearly identical to Earth's Sun. Its residents are human-type with no remarkable abilities or technology. The are primarily a one-planet spiecies, but have expanded in small amounts to the fourth planet of their system, mostly due to necessity.

Chronologically, Nikoths has developed for approximately one hundred and fifty years past Earth, but in a disastrous manner. Pollution and deforestation have devastated the planet's environment and the human populace only survives by oxygen filters in their giant, overcrowded cities. Efforts to control the population have met with little success. Several decades earlier, the entire planet was taken over by a fundamental religious sect who gained power by developing an airborne virus and releasing it on a limited basis using the oxygen filter systems. A city of 1,200,000 people was wiped out within a month. Individual cities were given the choice of having the virus unleashed upon their residents or submitting to leadership by the fanatics. After five cities were destroyed, people couldn't join the fanatics fast enough. Entire countries were demolished in this manner, as they could not attack their own panicked cities and frightened citizens and military personnel alike deserted their governments.

Since then, the planet has been wracked by brainwashing schemes and underground movements. Any city which permits its dissidents to survive or flourish is wiped out. This keeps most of the populace in line. Mobs have been known to tear apart dissidents limb from limb lest they all be killed for the actions of a few.

As mentioned, this fundamentalist group believes heavily in reproduction. Marriages are arranged at ten years of age by the government and couples are expected to bear at least six children successfully between the ages of 15 and 30. Infertile couples are killed. Homosexuals are killed. There is a heavy black market for children for those couples not capable of having their own.

Of course, there are always the slums. Most children sold to the black market are born in the slums, the poorest sectors of all cities. In the slums, it's possible to get away with more deviant activity. Such activities include safe sex, gay and lesbian relationships, and singles who are careful to hide themselves.

While the Nikoths dimension has little magic, particularly on Etkezym, the physics of the universe allow for magic to exist.

This dimension was assigned its name by the Pellorem, or Watchers, a species of pandimensional observers.


The Slums of Parketh
Parketh is a fairly average city, some 2.3 million residents. It is in this city's slums that Em's current apartment is located. The slums are in the dead center of the city where the oldest buildings are. The general rule of all planets of Nikoths is that the richer you are, the closer to the city's edge you live, where the air is cleaner.

Gas masks, air tanks, and breathing filters are common in Parketh's slums, for those who can afford them. Parketh's slums are slightly notorious for their seediness, and there is rumor there will be a full citizen police invasion and cleaning soon. They are not the worst slums of the planet, though.


The Apartment
Em's tiny slums apartment is stained, peeling, and dirty, but it came fully furnished (with outdated furnishings, but furnishings) and a "no questions asked" policy. It has three rooms: a bedroom, a main room, and a bathroom. The bedroom is small but has a bed suitable for two to sleep comfortably. (Obviously, beds meant for one person no longer exist on Etkezym.) The bathroom is tiny, with a stacked toilet and sink, meaning the sink is above the toilet and there's about enough room to stand. The showerhead is mounted into the ceiling of the room; when you want to shower, you simply close the door and turn on the water, standing next to your toilet. Thsi does have the benefit of keeping the toilet clean.

The main area is a living room/dining room/kitchen combo. It features a worn couch at least 50 years past it prime, a rickety coffee table, several light fixtures, a tiny kitchenette with a 10-year-old food storage device (a sort of combo fridge/freezer deal), a microwave-pot, a sink, and a trash can.

Sounds heavenly, eh?

In addition to its three rooms, Em has used her abilities to extend out a closet from one of the walls. This is basically a small pocket dimension linked to a wall surface and appearing to be a small room. Be warned -- though nothing will affect your non-perishable items in a pocket dimension, pocket dimensions do not always have the same temporal rate as the universe they are linked to. Most are a bit faster. They can also become disconnected from the dimension they are linked to and lost. If you are trapped in one and don't have the ability to link it back up, you can starve to death.

Corvus (Latin - the crow, or raven) is a small southern constellation with only 11 stars visible to the naked eye (brighter than magnitude 5.5). It was one of the 48 constellations listed by Ptolemy, and also counts among the 88 modern constellations.

Notable deep sky objects
Corvus contains no Messier objects. The Ringtail peculiar galaxy consists of the possibly colliding NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, and appears to have a heart shape as seen from Terra.

Corvus, the Crow, is a sacred bird of Phoebus Apollo in connection with giving prophetic functions. His wings were originally silver but were turned to black when he delivered bad news concerning the unfaithfulness of Cornis to Apollo.

Another story is where the bird is sent for a cup of water and returned to Apollo late, a water-snake in its grasp and a lie in its mouth. As punishment Apollo banished the bird to the stars just out of reach of a cup of water, which is guarded by Hydra.

Corvus has five named stars. They are:

Alchiba (Alpha Crv)
Kraz (Beta Crv)

For those of you who may not know, most stars are designated using Greek letters and Latin genitives. Greek letters are obviously the letters of the Greek alphabet, of which Alpha is the first letter and Omega the last. A genitive is a sort of possessive form, so "Corvi" means "of Corvus."

This type of stellar designation is called the Bayer designation, after Johann Bayer, who devised it in 1603. It's supposed to work that the brightest star in a constellation is the Alpha star, the second-brightest the Beta star, and so on and so forth, but this does not always hold true. Corvus is one such constellation where the Alpha star is not the brightest. There's another problem with the Bayer system, which is that the brightest stars in the sky may be very far away and thus look the dimmest from Earth. Alas, it's a big universe.

In addition to its five named stars, the constellation Corvus has numerous other, dimmer stars which do not have proper names. There are, after all, billions of stars in the sky, so most stars in the sky don't have names.

While the thought of sending a space ship to one of these named stars for colonization is common in science fiction computer games, most of the stars which are named are huge, many times larger than our sun, and thus the chances of there being planets suitable for human habitation in orbit around them are slim. So the next time your computer game suggests you send a colony ship to Betelgeuse or Vega, just shake your head in wonder.
