Hello! I'm Dora, Persephone's "mom", and I'm going to lay out a few rules for posting in her journal. 3nodding
-Bunnix owners and friends are welcome to post messages and drop off presents (^^) anytime they like. Anyone else, please pm me before posting in this journal.
-Watch your language! There are young, impressionable Bunnix in here.
-Have fun, and don't let Persephone scare you off. heart

And since I didn't know where to put this...a little bit about her name.
According to Greek mythology, Persephone is the goddess of the underworld. The name means "she who destroys the light." A creepy name for a creepy Bunnix, ne? wink

Persephone has a new little sister!! Her name is Ophelia, and she's a Fenthry. I'll record all of their adventures as they get to know each other in Persephone's journal and in Ophelia's, which is right here.

This is her adopted brother, Pero. He's a KitterKat-ain't he cute? whee He's very social, wheras she isn't, so they usually don't get along that well.

User Image

Her other brother, NoHoHon (it means sunshine buddy). He's content sitting on his cloud and watching everyone go about their business most of the time...

Suzume the guppy. Although she can't really play with her, Persephone does enjoy watching her swim around in the bowl.

I brought Persephone home today. I was thrilled when I walked into the Bunnix adoption center this morning and saw this perfectly beautiful little girl. She was fast asleep, curled up in her bed with a teddy bear as big as her, and she wore a little bonnet that tied in a bow under her chin. I couldn't help myself, I just had to stroke her soft baby fur, but the second my hand met her back she sprung up from her bed and began hissing at me. Now, Louhi had warned me that Persephone was a bit unfriendly and had a tendency to hiss at people, but I hadn't expected this. The effect, with this tiny baby Bunnix wearing her bonnet and hissing and growling like some ferocious creature, was absolutely adorable! I giggled to myself--this was going to be a challenge.
But I stood calmly as she continued her display, and soon enough she had tired herself out. I scooped her up and cradled her in my arms, humming softly, and despite her best efforts Persephone was fast asleep in no time at all. I held her for a long while, just staring at the little Bunnix that had been entrusted to me, and realized I was in love. She looked so sweet and innocent, but beneath that fluffy surface lay a little demon just waiting to come out. I smiled as I carried her out of the center. Yes, I think Persephone and I are going to get along just fine.

Persephone’s third day at home, and she got her first bath today.
I was cleaning the kitchen, and I put Persephone and her teddy bear in a playpen and brought it out so I could keep an eye on her while I worked. She stared at me with her tiny little eyes and hissed, currently her only form of protest. Once I had swept the entire kitchen floor into a neat little pile I realized that I didn’t have my dust pan. I only left for a second to go get it, but when I came back Persephone had tipped over the playpen, crawled out, and was playing in the pile of dust.
I picked her up (she squirmed and hissed, of course) and carried her to the bathroom, setting her down in the tub. I began to fill it up, and the second that water touched her paws she squealed and leapt about two feet into the air. She’s still small enough that I was able to hold her down with one hand while I shampooed her fur with the other. She tolerated being dried off much better than she did being washed. Initially she hissed and swatted at the hair dryer, but then she sat still for me and closed her eyes as the warm air blew over her. She’s a really cute little thing when she’s not being moody.

Persephone is starting to test my patience. It seems that she’s going through a toddler phase right now, chewing things up, not listening to me, and getting into all sorts of trouble trying to figure out just what she can and can’t get away with. I’m learning a lot from my experiences with her: I never knew rabbits could hiss before I met her, but more importantly I’ve learned that raising a Bunnix isn’t all fun and games. Persephone is a very special little girl that can be hard to deal with at times because of her sullen demeanor and, at times, horrible temper. She has required the occasional time out for chewing on cords, but I quickly discovered that punishment is not going to solve her problems.
Instead I have been showering her with love and affection, cuddling her and trying to get her to be a little more social. My other pets, NoHoHon and Pero, have been trying to help me with that, too. Pero and Persephone are pretty much polar opposites: he’s incredibly energetic and friendly, while she’ll just sit there and glare at you evilly (if only I could know what she’s thinking...). Today he decided he was going to start a game of tag with her, but Persephone thought it would be more fun to swat poor Pero across the face with her paw. He wasn’t hurt, but he was shaken and has been giving her space.
NoHoHon is more cautious around her, spending more time observing than taking any action. The two of them will spend a long time watching each other before going their separate ways, but it’s socialization all the same. I hope that eventually she’ll meet some other Bunnix and make friends with them.

Today I took Persephone to see her first movie, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I brought a bag of baby carrots for her to munch on while we watched the movie (I asked the theater staff if that was okay first, of course) and I had popcorn and vanilla Coke (she had a tiny sip, but the bubbles tickled her nose and she started sneezing!). She was antsy through the previews, but once the theater got dark and everyone became quiet she sat nicely in my lap.
I had been a little nervous that the film would be too scary for her, but Persephone is a very brave little Bunnix. Granted, she hissed every time Snape came on the screen, but I can’t really blame her for that! She seemed to enjoy scenes with the hippogriff the most: when she saw it, her ears perked up and her nose twitched. She was very good for the most part, and I plan on taking her to more movies in the future.
Persephone was quite tired when we got home, so I tucked her into bed, kissed her furry little forehead and told her goodnight. As I turned out the light and was leaving the room, I was shocked to hear her say “night-night.” Her first words! It was a very exciting moment, and I can hardly wait to hear what she has to say tomorrow morning.

Now that Persephone’s talking a bit she doesn’t hiss quite as much. I think this is partially because she can use words to express her distaste now, but also because of the bond we’re beginning to develop. She’s still very unfriendly towards strangers, hissing and being all-around creepy when she meets someone new, but she has certainly warmed up towards me. It’s fascinating to watch her personality develop, and I wonder what she’ll be like when she grows up.
We went to the farmer’s market today and bought lots of fresh veggies. Persephone had to sample some while we were there of course. I got plenty of corn on the cob, zucchini and eggplant for our Fourth of July cookout (like Persephone I’m a vegetarian, and we won’t be having any hot dogs and burgers on our grill). That’s going to be her first holiday! Oh, I hope she isn’t scared of fireworks...

((Look what SpazRanger gave us! Thank you so much!!))
Happy Fourth of July everyone!! Persephone and I had a very busy day with all of the festivities going on around town. When she woke up this morning I already had her breakfast made: carrot pancakes (her favorite) with a dollop of whipped cream and a tiny American flag stuck in the middle for a decoration. She squealed in delight and dug right in, although I had to explain that the flag wasn’t edible.
After breakfast we headed out to the annual Fourth of July parade that my town has. There were all sorts of floats and clowns and fire trucks and marching bands and people on horses with flags, and every time anything went by us she had to hiss at it! There were people from the police department walking up and down the street handing out goodies to the crowd: Persephone got a grab bag filled with candy and little toys.
The parade ended and we started for our next destination, the carnival. It’s another annual event here, and it was always my favorite part of the day when I was little so I figured I’d share it with Persephone now that I have her. The first thing she wanted to do was ride on the merry-go-round. The ride attendant said she was too short (then she hissed at him) but that she could sit in my lap if I was going on the ride. I let her pick out our horse, a black one, and she liked the ride so much that we had to go on it three times. I had to bribe her with a balloon to get her away from it! We played some carnival games next, and Persephone won a stuffed gorilla that’s about twice the size of her. Then we bought some mini donuts and cotton candy, which got her paws all sticky.
When we got home I prepared the food for the cookout while she played with the gorilla. I made eggplant burgers, grilled corn on the cob, fresh zucchini salad, and set out a bowl of cat food for Pero. Persephone ate two burgers (she must have worked up an appetite on the merry-go-round), and we had vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce and red, white, and blue sprinkles for dessert. By the time we were done with our meal it was almost time for fireworks.
I grabbed a couple blankets, extra clothing in case it was cold, and a camera before loading the gang into my car. On the way to the park Persephone asked why today was special, and I took the opportunity to give them a little history lesson. I explained that today was the day that the Declaration of Independence was signed, and the day that America declared its independence from England. I told them that it’s a very important day for our country and that the fireworks we were going to see were a very old tradition.
We arrived at the park and I lay out the blankets and got everyone out of the car. It was a little chilly, so I bundled them up and we cuddled close together on the blanket. After a few minutes of staring up at nothing Persephone asked when the show was going to start, and just then the first firework went off. The reactions varied: NoHoHon didn’t seem to notice anything was going on, while Pero let out a loud “MEOW!” and jumped inside of my coat. Persephone sat in my lap with the widest eyes I had ever seen, and for a moment I thought she was scared, but then her whiskers began twitching and she smiled. Pero calmed down and peeked his head out to see what was going on, and overall we had a wonderful time. I was surprised at how well-behaved they all were.
It was very late when we got home, so I put them straight to bed and went to write in Persephone’s journal--which is what I’m doing now! I think this is one of the best days she’s had yet, and hopefully she’ll still be in a good mood when she wakes up tomorrow. Hope everyone else had a happy and safe holiday.

Today we went to the library. I’ve decided that since Persephone is talking now she should learn to read as well. After all, it won’t be too long now before she’ll be heading off to school (they grow up so fast, don’t they?). I let her pick out which books she wanted to check out. Persephone chose The Velveteen Rabbit and Mr. Popper’s Penguins. I had initially planned to stay a little longer and read some books there, but when she began hissing at other library patrons and clerks I figured we’d head for home.
She listened intently as I read the books to her, occasionally becoming upset if I forgot to show her the pictures on a particular page. I think she enjoyed The Velveteen Rabbit more than the other book, and whether or not it’s because there’s a rabbit in the story or because it’s darker than Mr. Popper’s Penguins is unclear to me. I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if it was the latter, because even at a young age my creepy little Bunnix has a wonderful sense for the macabre.

I took Persephone pretty much everywhere with me today, trying to get her used to being around a variety of different people. One of our first stops was the Fenthry Preservation Center. I’ve been dropping by the past few days checking out the available feathers, and today I brought her with me to introduce her to my new friends and see how she interacts with the Fenthry. She was actually fairly well-behaved, and quite curious about the tiny feathered creatures. I might be adopting one, so it’s important to me that she gets along with them. She seemed more interested in watching them than actually interacting or playing, which is rather typical of her.
Our next stop was the Bunnix nursery. She was rather apprehensive about me leaving her with strangers, but I think she did all right for her first visit. She met another Bunnix named Soleil, who gave her a cookie. I would love it if she could make some friends, but her quirky and often creepy personality could keep even the most social Bunnix at bay... I plan on taking her back every day, or close to it, so she can be around others of her own species. She’s not entirely sure that she likes that idea (although she did express a desire to get more cookies), but I think it will be very good for her in the long run.
Lastly we went to Carra’s guppy shop, where we met a girl named Nomi and her Bunnix Maha. Nomi let me hold Maha and I handed Persephone off to her, but she had to give her back to me because the little thing wouldn’t stop hissing! Maha is amazingly well-behaved and adorable, he’s just a little dear. We’re already making plans for a playdate, and I hope they can become good friends. I just want the best for my beloved Persephone, and I think having a couple really good buddies will help her a lot.

Persephone seems to be getting bigger and more talkative every day. She definitely knows what she does and does not like, and she lets me know it. A couple things she does seem to like are the new additions to our home.
We got very exciting news last night from Louhi: I have been allowed to adopt a Fenthry! I brought Persephone with me to the adoption center where we picked up the little feather, which I have named Ophelia. She’s pink, just like Persephone. Persephone is now intent on being a good big sister, and spends quite a bit of time sitting and watching the feather.
I also adopted a guppy today named Suzume. Persephone can’t really interact with her, since Suzume is a fish, but her bright colors and quick movements seem to interest the little Bunnix. There have been many, many changes in our lives over the past couple days, and I was a bit nervous that Persephone would have a hard time adjusting but she seems to be adjusting quite well.

Hello again! Yesterday was extremely busy--I had my open house for graduation. There were tons of people over, and though I encouraged Persephone to play hostess she wanted no part of socializing with my guests. She hissed and snarled when people tried to pet her, so I suggested she find something else to do if she didn’t want to be part of the party, Persephone gladly took my suggestion and drug Pero up to my room where, I later found out, she dressed up the kitten in doll clothes.
Once everyone had left she came back down and promptly saw to eating the leftovers from my veggie tray. After checking in with some of our friends we all tucked in early. The majority of today was spent unwinding from today. I rented some movies, some for the younguns and some for myself, and we had popcorn and pretended my living room was a movie theater. Then Persephone went to the nursery, where she played hide and go seek with Mio, Huan, Tobit, and Soleil. I’m so happy that she’s starting to make new friends!
