((Look what SpazRanger gave us! Thank you so much!!))
Happy Fourth of July everyone!! Persephone and I had a very busy day with all of the festivities going on around town. When she woke up this morning I already had her breakfast made: carrot pancakes (her favorite) with a dollop of whipped cream and a tiny American flag stuck in the middle for a decoration. She squealed in delight and dug right in, although I had to explain that the flag wasn’t edible.
After breakfast we headed out to the annual Fourth of July parade that my town has. There were all sorts of floats and clowns and fire trucks and marching bands and people on horses with flags, and every time anything went by us she had to hiss at it! There were people from the police department walking up and down the street handing out goodies to the crowd: Persephone got a grab bag filled with candy and little toys.
The parade ended and we started for our next destination, the carnival. It’s another annual event here, and it was always my favorite part of the day when I was little so I figured I’d share it with Persephone now that I have her. The first thing she wanted to do was ride on the merry-go-round. The ride attendant said she was too short (then she hissed at him) but that she could sit in my lap if I was going on the ride. I let her pick out our horse, a black one, and she liked the ride so much that we had to go on it three times. I had to bribe her with a balloon to get her away from it! We played some carnival games next, and Persephone won a stuffed gorilla that’s about twice the size of her. Then we bought some mini donuts and cotton candy, which got her paws all sticky.
When we got home I prepared the food for the cookout while she played with the gorilla. I made eggplant burgers, grilled corn on the cob, fresh zucchini salad, and set out a bowl of cat food for Pero. Persephone ate two burgers (she must have worked up an appetite on the merry-go-round), and we had vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce and red, white, and blue sprinkles for dessert. By the time we were done with our meal it was almost time for fireworks.
I grabbed a couple blankets, extra clothing in case it was cold, and a camera before loading the gang into my car. On the way to the park Persephone asked why today was special, and I took the opportunity to give them a little history lesson. I explained that today was the day that the Declaration of Independence was signed, and the day that America declared its independence from England. I told them that it’s a very important day for our country and that the fireworks we were going to see were a very old tradition.
We arrived at the park and I lay out the blankets and got everyone out of the car. It was a little chilly, so I bundled them up and we cuddled close together on the blanket. After a few minutes of staring up at nothing Persephone asked when the show was going to start, and just then the first firework went off. The reactions varied: NoHoHon didn’t seem to notice anything was going on, while Pero let out a loud “MEOW!” and jumped inside of my coat. Persephone sat in my lap with the widest eyes I had ever seen, and for a moment I thought she was scared, but then her whiskers began twitching and she smiled. Pero calmed down and peeked his head out to see what was going on, and overall we had a wonderful time. I was surprised at how well-behaved they all were.
It was very late when we got home, so I put them straight to bed and went to write in Persephone’s journal--which is what I’m doing now! I think this is one of the best days she’s had yet, and hopefully she’ll still be in a good mood when she wakes up tomorrow. Hope everyone else had a happy and safe holiday.
