This is a journal for Dora to use as she coaxes her Fenthry out of its feather and has lots of fun adventures with it.

Please don't post here unless Dora has given you permission!

Ophelia
The feather suddenly pushes its way out of the box, caught on a gust of unfelt wind. It seems to lose its sense of direction, floating haphazardly toward the ceiling and the walls, barbs rippling uncertainly. Its tip just barely touches the ceiling before falling backward, toward the floor. Its erratic flight has taken it slightly off course, though, and it quickly lands on a shelf rather than the floor. A brilliant flash of magical light erupts from the feather...and a four-inch tall child is left sitting in a small scorched ring, looking uncertain about the world into which she has emerged. Though not as shy as other fenthries as pale as herself, she does seem a bit nervous around those she does not know.

"Here Dora, I've got a journal for you." Louhi hands over the heavy book, then she unlocks the case and gives the pink feather to its new owner.

Dora takes the large book and sets it by her feet. 'Time to start writing again,' she thinks with a smile. Her expression changes to one of wonder as Louhi hands her the lovely pink feather she's been hoping to adopt. She holds out both hands and gently takes the feather...it seems to be even more beautiful than before.
"Thank you, Miss Louhi," she says with a slight bow. She looks at her new Fenthry lovingly.
"Such a lovely little girl deserves an equally lovely name. I think I shall call her...Ophelia."

**********

Hello, my name is Dora. I’m the guardian of the sweet little Fenthry Ophelia. In this journal I will record all of our adventures, discoveries, as well as daily accounts of life with a Fenthry in my care. Who knows, when Ophelia grows up she may even want to write in it herself! I hope you enjoy reading our accounts, and check back often because I’m sure I’ll always have something new and exciting to write about.

About Ophelia...
Current state: child! She emerged from her feather on July 13.
Ophelia is mostly a delicate shade of pink. The insides of her ears, area around her eyes, underbelly, soles of her feet, wings, and the tip of her tail are a very pale pink. The tips of her wings and a small heart on her hip are a bright pinkish-red. She has dark auburn hair that falls just above her shoulders.

Saturday morning, July 10: Journal entry #1

Hello, I’m Dora, Ophelia’s new mom. Since this is my very first journal entry, I figured it would be appropriate to explain how I came to be one of the lucky Fenthry owners.
Last Monday I was making my usual rounds, checking up on my pets and visiting with friends when I happened to come upon a very intriguing new place: The Fenthry Preservation Society. I had walked past the shop quite a few times and often stopped to look in the window at the adorable little creatures, but I had never gone inside the shop or seen a Fenthry up close. I decided that today was the day.
As soon as I stepped in the door I felt that I had been transported to some Lilliputian world, with tiny feathered children flying around. I greeted their owners, all of whom were very friendly and happy to answer questions I had about their curious pets. My attention soon turned to a large glass case sitting in the center of the shop, containing several feathers laid out carefully on a black pillow.
I learned that the feathers were actually young Fenthry that had not yet emerged. That is when I learned the story of the Fenthry, of the spell that had been placed on them and the way Louhi had rescued them from an uncertain fate. My heart was won over by the tale, and by the fact that Fenthry are just downright adorable creatures. Looking closer at the feathers I noticed that two of them were still up for adoption and had not yet been reserved by any prospective owners. One was a silvery male, the other a pink female.
I found myself drawn to the pink feather for some reason, but I was not yet sure if I had what it took to look after a Fenthry. In the meantime, I met a shy boy who was interested in the silver feather. We talked for a little while, and he seemed very nice. I also met some owners whose Fenthry had already emerged, and some who had just recently adopted feathers.
Next I met D-Chan Spiro, Louhi’s shop assistant. I asked her (rather nervously) if anyone had shown any interest in the pink feather, and she replied that several others had inquired but no one had requested to adopt her yet. That would soon change.
I spent the next several days sitting around the shop, watching as people came and went, and as more and more of them showed an interest in the little female. One boy offered over 10,000 gold to adopt the Fenthry. Other people came and asked to adopt, and D-Chan took their names down to give to Louhi. It would be her decision who the precious Fenthry would go to.
Hours turned to days, and soon the only feathers left in the case were the pink one and the silver one. Then the silver male was adopted, by the boy I had spoken with I would later find out, and there was just one feather left. More people came to request her, and I found myself growing anxious. The more time that passed, the more I wanted that Fenthry to be mine, to become a permanent part of my life. She’d already pulled more than a few of my heartstrings, and I knew that I might not be the one to take her home.
By the end of the week I had gotten to know the regulars quite well. Several of them commented that they thought I would make a wonderful owner, or that they hoped I would get the feather. I was a bit embarrassed, but also grateful for their kindness which pulled me through to the end of this story.
Yesterday evening as I was sitting chatting with my new friends, Louhi entered the shop and unlocked the glass case, handing the last feather to me. I was so happy that I could hardly express my emotion with words. I named the delicate feather Ophelia, thanked Louhi over and over, and thanked everyone for all of their support. I was especially happy to see Kel-Chan and Lady Vincira there, two of the other prospective owners. They congratulated me and we exchanged pleasantries with no hard feelings to be found. (Such wonderful people, I’m confident they’ll get their own Fenthry soon enough)
...and that’s how I adopted Ophelia. After picking her up last night I went to bed early, setting my pink feather on the night stand and wishing her sweet dreams. When I woke up in the morning I almost thought it had all been a dream until I saw her sitting there. I picked her up and cradled her against my cheek, whispering to her how special she was and how happy I was that we were together. She is indeed very special, a treasure, and I am eternally grateful for my little Fenthry, my Ophelia.

Saturday evening, July 10: Journal entry #2

Today was Ophelia’s first full day at home, and she went everywhere with me. I found a length of pale pink ribbon that I carefully tied around the end of her quill, then slipped the ribbon around my neck so I could still keep her with me while I ran errands. Tomorrow is my open house, and there’s still a great deal to be done--pick up the food, clean and decorate the house, etcetera etcetera. I’ve been very stressed out, and somehow having the feather near me helps me feel better about things.
My Bunnix Persephone is quite interested in the new addition. She watched the feather for quite some time today before asking why it wasn’t doing anything. I explained to her that a Fenthry would emerge from the feather soon, and now she constantly asks me when Ophelia-feather is going to turn into a Fenthry. (She tends to be rather impatient, but I must admit that I’m wondering the same thing myself!)
I took the girls to Carra’s guppy shop where I bought a lovely fish named Suzume, and on the way home I stopped at Arial-San’s cookie cake bakery where I picked up a special treat to celebrate Ophelia’s homecoming:
<center><img src="http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v290/fridaydorothy/fenthry/opheliacake.gif"></center>
I cut a piece for everyone and we had it for dessert that evening. It was delicious, and we ended up eating the entire cake! After we finished and everyone was full, happy, and sleepy, I read the “kids” a bedtime story. I chose Are You My Mother? because it’s about a baby bird, and Ophelia’s a feather...plus it’s just a very cute book. Persephone, Pero, and NoHoHon seemed to enjoy it, and I wonder if Ophelia could hear the story. If she did, I bet she liked it, too.
I tucked everyone in and then headed up to my room, where I’ve made a sort of makeshift bed for Ophelia. Earlier in the day I had found a shoe box that was just the right size for the feather, and I turned it into a “nest” with a blanket and set it on my night stand where Ophelia had stayed last night. Taking the ribbon off from around my neck, I untied the feather and lay her in the box, gently pulling the blanket partly over her in case it got cold.
My first day with my new Fenthry was quite interesting, and I’m excited to see what tomorrow brings. Oh, I almost forgot. I always read my horoscope in the paper when I get up in the morning, and this is what it said today: “Bonds are strengthened with a little more effort on your part. You’re thinking: Why not on theirs? Why do I always have to be the one to make an effort? In this case, you’re stronger. If you lead by action, you’ll like what happens next.” Do you think it has something to do with Ophelia? I know that I have to form a bond with her before she’ll emerge from the feather... And that’s what will be happening next! Is it just coincidence, or something more? Oh well, I should be going to sleep myself now, it’s been a busy day for all of us.

Sunday evening, July 11: Journal entry #3

I had the open house for my graduation today. Because there were so many people around I decided it would be best for her if she stayed up in my room while the guests were here (she is a rather pale pink, and I’ve heard that the paler Fenthry are shyer). I did have her on her ribbon before they started arriving, but after one or two people had come I took her back upstairs and set her in the box. Persephone went up to my room to watch her; she’s very excited about being a big sister and likes helping me out with her.
The party lasted about six hours, and then our lives returned to normal...sort of. There’s still a lot of cleaning to be done, but I’ll save that for later. I took Ophelia to the Preservation Society where we saw Sindarin and Raidon. While Ophelia’s still a feather I’ve been playing quite a bit with other people’s Fenthry, practicing my parenting skills. I want to be the best possible mom for Ophelia when she emerges.
I also noticed something rather unusual in the shop: there was one fluffy feather sitting in the glass case Ophelia had been in. A fluffy feather! I soon found out that it’s a female, and that she’s up for auction. Kel-Chan and Quietsnooze seem to be entering a bidding war for the pretty little Fenthry... (Don’t tell Quietsnooze I said this, but I really hope Kel-Chan gets the feather. She wants a Fenthry so bad, and she would be a wonderful caretaker.)
I’m sorry I don’t feel much like writing tonight, it’s just been a very exhausting day. I think tomorrow will be spent recuperating from today, it’ll give me a chance to spend some time with my pets. It’s terribly nice to have the open house over with, now my “children” can once again have my undivided attention. Maybe a little bit of quality TLC will convince the lovely Ophelia to come out of her feather?

Monday evening, July 12: Entry #4
Today was quite relaxing, seeing as I didn’t have anything I was obliged to do. I rented a few movies for Persephone to watch and vegged out on the couch with Ophelia behind my ear. I’ve noticed the feather being a little more...well, active, if it’s possible for a feather to be active. It shakes and trembles every once in a while, and I get the most exciting feeling from her; it’s almost like she’s a child trying to crack its eggshell. Maybe this means she’s going to emerge from her feather soon? I can’t believe how anxious I am to see her, I bet she’s a beautiful Fenthry, she’s already so pretty just being a feather.
We made our daily visit to Louhi’s shop after dropping Persephone off at the nursery. Ophelia is making friends already, and she hasn’t even emerged out of her feather. The other feathers from her batch have already turned into children, but Ophelia was the last one adopted so I suppose it makes sense that she would be the last one to come out. Still, I hope I’m giving her the care and attention she needs. She already goes everywhere with me, and I sing to her, read to her, cuddle her and shower her with affection... She’s going to be a very spoiled little girl, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
-Dora
Kel-chan checked carefully that this was the right place, and then deposited a little package by the side of the door. In it was a note...

The note

Tuesday night, July 13: Entry #5
What a day. I’m dead tired, but I needed to document today’s rather unusual, nerve-wracking, and thrilling events.
I woke up extra early this morning because I had to be at work by 6 a.m. Having five pets and myself to take care of, I need to make money somehow, so when a friend of mine asked if I would be able to put in fourteen hours to help her out today, monetary compensation included, I quickly agreed. I got dressed, put Ophelia behind my ear, and went about my morning chores: making and eating breakfast, feeding the fish, setting out a bowl of milk for Pero and some jellybeans for NoHoHon. I ran back up to my room and set Ophelia back in her box where she would be nice and safe, gently kissing the feather and telling her I’d be back soon before placing the lid on her box and shutting the door to my room.
I got Persephone up (she is not a morning Bunnix, I discovered) and dropped her off at the nursery on the way to work. The day seemed to drag on forever once I got there, the monotony of performing the same tasks over and over taking a toll on my patience. I was very anxious to get back home to spend time with my critters, but a girl’s got to make a living somehow...
When my workday finally ended I hopped in the car, picked up Persie from the nursery and rushed home as fast as I could (without breaking the speed limit, of course!). Pero and NoHoHon were there to greet me as soon as I unlocked the door, and I stopped to pet them before heading up the stairs to check on Ophelia. I opened the door to my room and walked over to the night stand next to my bed. As I was about to lift the lid off of Ophelia’s shoe box I noticed something terribly wrong: the lid was lying crooked on top of the box, partly ajar. I quickly pushed it off and my worst fears were confirmed. The feather was gone.
I didn’t understand how it could’ve happened. When I had arrived home my bedroom door was still closed, so Pero and NoHoHon couldn’t have possibly gotten in there; neither of them are tall enough to reach the doorknob, and they wouldn’t be able to close the door after leaving. Persephone wasn’t home, so it couldn’t have been her. Could it have been an intruder? No, I’d locked the door and it had still been locked when I came home. Perhaps a gust of wind had pushed the lid off the box and caused the feather to go flying?
It seemed like the most logical answer of the two at the time, so I quickly began looking around my room for Ophelia. I looked under my furniture, under the bed, in the closet, I even checked some of my dresser drawers, but no feather. Just as I was about to start panicking I heard a tiny giggle come from somewhere high in my room. My eyes scanned the ceiling, and then my gaze settled on a shelf high in the corner of my room. Perched carefully on the edge of the shelf was a tiny Fenthry!
It only took a second for me to realize that the Fenthry was none other than my lovely Ophelia. ‘How did you get way up there?’ I wondered. I pulled a chair over and stood on it to reach the shelf, gently scooping the little girl into my hand. She didn’t struggle at all and just looked at me with wide, curious eyes as I held her. I stepped down from my precarious spot on the chair and opted to sit down on my bed as I examined her. She was beautiful! More beautiful than I ever would’ve imagined. I beamed down at her, unable to stop myself from grinning madly.
“Hello Ophelia,” I said, “I’m Dora, your mommy.” Ophelia then smiled at me, the sweetest, most adorable smile I had ever seen. My feather had turned into a child! All of the waiting I had done to adopt Ophelia, and the time spent anticipating her emergence from the feather suddenly felt incredibly worthwhile as I held the pretty little Fenthry in my hand. I gently stroked her down the back with my finger, and she made the cutest chortle/purring sound, closing her eyes happily. If I could’ve made the same sound I certainly would have done so. My darling little Ophelia has grown up.
It had gotten pretty late by then, so I placed Ophelia back in her box and tucked her in, placing another kiss to the top of her head as I wished her sweet dreams. I’ll get to know her better tomorrow, and maybe introduce her to my other pets. Oh, there’s so much to do now that she’s out of her feather! The best part of being a Fenthry owner is just beginning for me.

Wednesday evening, July 14: Entry #6
Ophelia and I spent lots of time getting to know each other today. She was already awake when I got up this morning, and happily jumped into my hand when I went to pick her up. I set her on my shoulder and she rode around as I went about my morning routine. I’ve probably written this before, but the paler Fenthry are supposed to be shyer. So far Ophelia doesn’t seem shy at all... It’s probably just because everything’s so new and she’s still so excited, but at the same time she’s relatively helpless. Right now she’s rather like a newborn, and I’m watching her very carefully as she explores the world.
She had her formal introductions to the rest of the family at breakfast. Ophelia’s “big sister,” Persephone, took the liberty of introducing herself and telling Ophelia all about how we waited for her to come out of the feather. Ophelia just sat and stared at the Bunnix in wonder; she probably can’t understand a word we say yet. As I sat at the table, Pero rubbed against my legs and purred before leaping up to investigate the tiny creature. The sound seemed to fascinate Ophelia, who did her best imitation of a cat. NoHoHon glanced at her quickly before falling asleep again. He doesn’t do much of anything...
I thought it would be fun to take the gang out for a picnic today, so I packed a basket and we went to the park. Ophelia thought the basket was wonderful and spent most of her time exploring the interior of it. I watched her carefully just to make sure she wouldn’t become trapped under a sandwich or anything--after all, she is only four inches tall. Once I unrolled the blanket and began setting up the food she ventured out and crawled back over to me, where she sat while we ate. She didn’t seem interested in the food at all and actually fell asleep in my lap about halfway through the meal. After I repacked everything I carefully put the sleeping Fenthry in my pocket, where she stayed until we got home.
At the end of the day we made our usual visit to the Fenthry shop, where my friends met Ophelia for the very first time. Many of the other Fenthry have come out of their feathers as well, I discovered, and we spent some time meeting all of the new friends. The auction for that fluffy feather also ended today... QuietSnooze ended up winning it, and I know she’ll be a great owner for the special Fenthry. I’ll bet Kel-Chan will be getting one of her own soon enough. Oh, did I mention that Kel gave us a present? She dropped off a little toy feather yesterday while I was out, it was very sweet of her. I set it inside of Ophelia’s bed-box so she can always have it near her.
Speaking of bed, that’s probably where I should be heading now. Sorry if today’s entry was a little incoherent, I’m just so excited that Ophelia’s a child now!

Friday evening, July 16: Entry #7
I’ve had Ophelia an entire week now--can you believe it? It certainly doesn’t feel like I’ve had her that long... It’s probably because she was a feather for the majority of that time.
Ophelia’s becoming more and more curious about her surroundings, and she’s also turning out to be quite playful. I’d really like it if she had some other young Fenthry to play with, so I’ve been taking her to the Preservation Center to meet the others. Today when we went in there were quite a few people hanging around, and for good reason. Louhi found even more feathers that she has up for adoption! By the end of the day there were only two left, and she’d started out with six or so. Fenthry seem to be getting more and more popular... Anyway, one of the feathers that’s left is pink (a little darker than Ophelia), and I began hatching a plan...
You see, Kel-Chan is out of town right now and won’t be back until the 31st of July. She really, really wants a feather of her own, and I thought wouldn’t it be nice to surprise her with a Fenthry when she gets back? I asked D-Chan about it and I just might be able to purchase the feather in Kel’s place, but there might be another girl who asked about the feather before I did. It sounds like Louhi’s got more feathers she’ll be putting out for adoption soon, though, so Kel-Chan will be able to get one one way or another.
The feathers intrigued Ophelia. I tried explaining to her that she used to be in a feather like the ones in the glass case, but whenever I would start talking she’d find something more interesting to get into. She’s got a really short attention span right now! When she gets older she’ll probably calm down, for now I enjoy having a hyperactive baby Fenthry... Although I don’t see how the owners of multiple Fenthry can handle more than one!

Saturday evening, July 17th: Entry #8
We met so many other Fenthry today! Ophelia finally got a formal introduction to D-Chan’s Fenthry, Kurenai. She’s a teenager now, and Ophelia seemed to regard the older girl with something akin to reverence. Kurenai is very friendly and seems to be very well-behaved (it doesn’t surprise me though, her being raised by D-Chan). I hope Ophelia turns out as well as she did.
Kagei, another teenager, was also at the society. Ophelia acted a little bit shy towards him... I sure hope it wasn’t flirting, she’s only four days old! Anyway, Kagei belongs to BunnyMayCry, and he’s adorable and has beautiful coloring.
Avelena was there with her Fenthry, Naomi. Have I mentioned Naomi before? She’s a very rare long-haired Fenthry, dark blue and covered in tiny white spots that look like stars against a night sky. She’s been in her feather for several days now, and this afternoon she came out of her feather. Avelena is thrilled, of course, and I was excited to see Naomi, too. I’ve never seen a long-haired female before, and she’s just stunning. Ophelia was curious about this odd little creature; they’re very close to the same age, and I hope they can become friends.
Last but not least is Keydin, Seirae's Fenthry. I believe he and Ophelia came from the same batch of feathers, but he was adopted earlier so he came out of his feather before she did. Right now Keydin is obsessed with pirates. All he talks about is pirates, all he plays is pirates... He’s quite a character.
So that’s four more Fenthry we met today out of... a whole bunch. There are still a ton of them that we don’t know yet, but we’ve got plenty of time. For now, I think Ophelia is a little socialized-out, she’s quite tired and I should be putting her to bed. Good night!
