Lately there is alot of hustle and bustle about the contents of the Chatterbox. This post will outline some basic rules and guidelines to follow while visiting the Chatterbox Forum. It's basically a list of DO NOT's. Most of which are taken from the Terms Of Service, that every user is required to sign before being able to play Gaiaonline, or the Rules and Guidelines of Gaiaonline. (be familiar with them!!)

While experiencing the Chatterbox Forum (or any forum for that matter)...

DO:
--Show respect to everyone.
--Read the stickies and the first post of every thread you go into.

DO NOT: (If you see anyone doing the following, report it to an online Dedicated Moderator or Gaia Helper (unless it is a scam, in whch case you report it via the Report A Scamming form)
--SEND USERS CHAIN MAIL!! EVER!!
--Encourage anyone to commit suicide.
--Insult others.
--Engage in or request cyber, either via post or private message.
--Post or request pornographic images, movies or sounds via post or private message.
--Offer or request any kind of sexual favor such as cyber, strip teases via cam or phone sex.
--Ask for illegal data such as mp3s, movies, warez, etc...
--Joke about rape and molestation.
--Make any racial/descriminatory insult, such as saying "******** you ******." or "******** off k**e." or "I ******** hate faggots." or "I hope those ******** towelheads all die." That kind of language is unacceptable and hurtful to others.
--Post links to Outwar or other similar websites.
--Click on any links from users that you dont know, unless it is directed to gaiaonline.com
--Install any programs from users you do not know.
--Attempt to cheat on Gaia by using a Gold Generator, they don't exist. They are programs that hackers use to gain access to your account.
--Make contest threads with offers you can't hold to, such as "First one to bump on page 10 gets 10,000gold!!" If you can't ante up then it's a scam and you get banned.
--Make club threads based around sex and/or stripping.
--Make threads to RP "rape" or molesting.
--Use bots to spam the Chatterbox, or bot your own account to earn gold.
--Post those lengthy "14gold per post" messages. They will be reported and you will be banned for scamming.

The following offenses are not really worth reporting unless it gets out of hand.
DO NOT:
--Spam in a thread unless it's allowed.
--Get off topic in a thread. It's rude to do so.
--Post huge pictures. It's annoying and often stretches the page for most users. This makes the pages hard to navigate.
--Make threads with false pretenses, such as "Bump here for a pink link!!!" or "Spam here and you will get a blue box!!! Guarenteed! Come look!!"

--When you edit your last post on a page your sig will dissapear. eek There is no fix, there is no workaround. Deal with it and have some patience.

I'm Not Getting Private Messages
--New users who signed up for gaia AFTER the release of the friendslist cannot send PMs becuase by default PMs(private messages) are turned off.
To fix this go to your profile and choose "edit profile". While you are there scroll down to preferences and edit your setting as you wish. Make sure to save before you close the window or move on.

This post is just to give a little detail on how to deal with a possible hack and/or scam

Gaia staff will not contact you over messengers (AIM, MSN, YIM, ICQ or IRC) about becomming staff.
Reminder: NEVER give your password to anyone!!!
REAL Gaia Staff will never ask for your password. They don't need it for ANY reason.

Hacking
Hacking is when you go into someone elses account and take their gold or items.
90% of hackings are not truly a hacking, but a friend using another friend's account to do things without permission.
If a friend does this to you, your friend will not be unbanned.

<center>A Few Tips To Avoid Being Hacked</center>
Password:
-NEVER EVER GIVE YOUR PASSWORD OUT TO ANYONE
-Get a newer, complex password. NO names of friends, animals, school, favorite songs, phone numbers, previous passwords.
--A GOOD PASSWORD: is atleast 8 characters long. mixed alphanumeric [a-z][A-Z][0-9] with a mixture of capital letters. "12345", "54321", "GaiaIsTehBomb", etc., ARE NOT GOOD PASSWORDS. Don't use the same password for more than 1 site. If they figure out the same password that is used on one service, whats to stop them from trying to access the OTHER services you use?
--Also, when you update your password, besure to have it written down somewhere in a safe place untill you have it memorized.
--Allowing your browser to save your login allows your computer to save a cookie file onto your system. This cookie file stores your user name and password for the site. A hacker could gain access to your system and steal the cookie file, retreiving your user name and password. Though this isn't a major risk, there is still a risk.

KeyLoggers:
-DO NOT run any programs given from people in GAIA that might include topics such as: Gold Maker, Character Editor, Event Finders, and the like... They are ALL key loggers. Nothing of those nature exist on GAIA and never will.

Free Online Virus Scanner:
Housecall -Trend Micro offers a free online virus scan called HouseCall. When you click that link it will prompt you with a Security Warning to install something from Trend Mirco. In order to run the virus scan you must install this. This is a java file, the virus scan runs on java. Make sure to allow Housecall to "Auto Clean".

-All "gold generators" and "event finders" are fake. They are tools hackers use to gain access to your account.
-No one should ever ask for access to your account. If they do, report them right away.

Really, there are no secrets to getting gold on GAIA. There is no way to cheat for extra gold. Also, admins have already said that accounts will never be deleted. Everything on Gaia is based around your account number so deleting even one would throw the entire system off.

This is a list of some common terms thrown around on Gaia, and their meanings.

#:
#g - A number nex to a "g" signifies the amount of gold to the 1's. For example; 1g is 1 gold. 10g is 10 gold. etc...
#k - A number next to a "k" signifies the amount of gold to the 1,000's. For example; 1k = 1,000gold. 6k = 6,000gold. etc...

A:
Administrator - [admin for short] The ones who really run the site, behind the scenes ninja ; They are: Lanzer, Ling, VO, and L0cke. Their names are noted in a dark orange color on the forum index page.
AFK - 1: User Image

Abbreviation for A Furry Kewt Hat. This item was given to donators during the month of November 2003.
2: Net acronym for "Away From Keyboard."
Avatar - [also ava, avi or other similar shortenings] This refers to your character that shows up when you post. This character represents the person behind the post.

B:
Ban - [also banned or banning] Being unable to access ones account due to breaking the rules of Gaia numerous times. This can get as severe as having your whole IP address blocked, which prevents anyone from using that computer, or even worse, your account can get locked out and noone can ever access it.
Blue Box - [also bb] User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

This term refers to the event that users can get while playing Gaia Online. It can contain any rare or uncommon item, as well as 1000gold (equivalent to a pink link).
Botting - Botting is using a program or macros to surf Gaia for you while you are away from your computer so that you are always earning gold. This will get you banned without questions asked.
BTK - 1: User Image

Abbreviation for Bit Too Kewl Hat. This item was given to donators during the month of November 2004.
2: Net acronym for "Back to keyboard."
BUMP - [Bring Up My Post] A word users usually post when they want to bring a thread back to the top of the forum. Generally used in the chatterbox and other fast moving forums like the Gaia Exchange.
Bunines - User Image

Refering to the Bunny Slippers given out at Easter of 2003.
BUTT - [Bring Up This Thread] Same as a BUMP.

C:
Chickies - User Image

Refering to the Chicky Slippers given out at Easter of 2003.
Cyber - [also cyber sex] Acting out sexual acts and/or favors over the internet via text. This is illegal on Gaia and will get you banned instantly.

D:
DJs - User Image

Refers to the DJ Studio Headphones. This item was given to donators during the month of August 2003.
Domo - [also domo-kun] This is a domo-kun domokun Domo is from a Japanese TV series, the main character being Domo-kun. You can download the episodes at: http://www.domo-kun.de/

E:
Enchanted Trunk - [also Trunk, ET] User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

An Enchanted Trunk is a rare event that users can find around Gaia. Trunks contain uncommon items like the flower wristbands and dried grass skirts.

F:
Flame - Verbal abuse or harassment from one user towards another. This includes insults of any kind. This is illegal on Gaia and should be reported.
Flame Clothes - Worn by Gaia males, usually new to Gaia. Generally those in flame clothing are mocked and made fun of becuase they are associated with being poor due to their cheapness. Personally, I love the flame clothes.
Flame War - An argument that has gotten out of hand where users are just constantly insulting and being rude to one another.
Forum - An area where discussion can take place, where topics can be made, and generally the whole message board that is Gaiaonline. For example; Chatterbox is a spam forum.

G:
Glomp - A tackle-hug. Glomping is a basic form of affection beit towards a significant other or a friend. This is general noted as an action; -glomps- *glomps* ::glomps:: etc...

K:
Kawaii - Japanese word, meaning "cute". For example; OMFG Those wings are totally kawaii on you!!
KK - Abbreviation for Kandy Korn Hat; User Image

. This was one of the items given out during the Halloween 2003 event.

L:
Leet - [also l33t or 1337] Leet was originally taken from the word 'elite' meaning the best. Leet is also a computer language created by hackers to confuse those they were trying to hack. Using leet allowed them to talk to eachother without worrying about others figuring out their code.
Letters - User Image

When you donate real money to Gaia, for every $2.50 you donate you will recieve 1 donation letter for that month. At the end of the month you will be able to open the letters and choose between two surprise items. Noone will know what they are till the letters open. Locked - Closed threads that users can read but can not post in. For example; Memorable Posts forum is locked. Locked threads are noted with this image: User Image

Lurk - [also lurker] Making no posts, or just one post in a thread and sticking around without saying anything, to watch the thread progress.

M:
Mini's - User Image

Refers to Mini Nightmare WIngs and Mini Angelic Wings. These items were given to donators during the month of September 2003.
Moderator - [also mod] Mods are simply the police of Gaia. When you have a problem that you can't handle, go to a mod. (For more information, see the post defining mod classes and how to report people)

N:
Net Speak - Speaking in abbreviations. People often look down upon those who use netspeak. For example; hi how r u. i m fine thnx. The words bolded are examples of netspeak. Other commonly used terms include "wut" "y" "ppl" and "plz".
Newb - [also newbie] General term used for newcomers to Gaiaonline.
N00b - Negative slang term used in reference to generally annoying and ignorant users. Also used as slang to mean "newb". However, newbies are the good apples, n00bs are the bad apples. N00b's are not always new to Gaia. They are just annoying and obnoxious.

O:
Oldbie - [also veteran or vet] Term used in reference to people who have been on Gaia for a considerably long period of time. This has no corelation to the persons intellegence, just their join date. Oldbies can be n00bs. Never judge a person by their joindate though.
OMG - 1: User Image

Abbreviation for the Odd Mischievous Gremlin Hat. This was a donation item from November of 2003.
2: Oh My Gift: Refering to rare events users can find around Gaia. When you get an event, an OMG face ( eek ) will appear next to your avatar in the header of the forum. Rare events can appear anywhere on Gaia.
3: Net acronym for "Oh my god!"
OMFG - 1: User Image

Abbreviation for the Oddly Mischievous, Freaky & Grim Hat. This was a donation item from December of 2004.
2: Net acronym for "Oh my ******** god!"

P:
Pink Box - [also PB] User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

A Pink Box is a rare event that users can find around Gaia. Pink boxes contain rare items like the coon tail or angelic headbands.
Pink Link - [also PL] A rare event users can find around Gaia. Pink links give out 1000gold. A pink link is simply as it's called; a link that highlighted in pink. An example of a pink link can be found here
Ports - [also portables] User Image

Abbreviation for Portable Headphones. This item was given out to donators during the month of August 2003.

Q:
Q n F'er - Referring to regulars of the Questions and Feedback forum.

R:
Reg - Term used in reference to a user who regularly posts and hangs out in certain forums and/or threads.
Rollback - Having an account "rolled back". When a user is legitly hacked or scammed, the admins will set the account back to the time before it was hacked or scammed. This will revert all gold, item changes and trades to the set rollback date. This can also occur when a database glitch causes serious problems to accounts and inventories.

S:
Sig - [also signature and siggy] This refers to the text and/or picture under a persons post. Signatures can be set in a users profile. There is a 500 character limit, as well as a maximum height and width of 500 x 500 pixels, and a 100kb size.
SPAM - Stupid Pointless Annoying Meaningless posts. Spam refers to any nonsensical, random or pointless posts. They can be anything from "bumpbumpbumpbump", posting only emoticons like gonk , or just hitting keys like "dsuifisdjkfhssf" Spam has no relevance to the topic of the thread. Spam is only allowed in Chatterbox. Spamming outside of the chatterbox will get you in trouble.
Sticky - Refers to a thread that has the mods have made STUCK at the top of a forum. They usually contain important information and should be read before posting in a any forum. Since these threads never leave the top of the page there is no point in bumping them. Sticky threads are noted with this image: User Image

Sub-Forum - A forum within a forum. For example, the Recycle Bin is a subforum of the Chatterbox Forum.

<center>How Gold Is Earned</center>

The imformation in the first half of this post is taken from one of Dri's posts.

Gold:
As you look around the site, you earn 1g every few seconds or so - just for looking around and clicking links!
When you post, vote in a poll, submit reviews in the Link List, or comment in the Art Arena, you get gold for it eek The first few times you post, vote or whatever, you get a lot of gold, but the more you do it the less you earn at once. This is to discourage spamming, even though people do it wink

Example of how gold is earned:

10 posts in 10 minutes, your gold earned will be 10,10,5,5,3,3,3,3,1,1...
10 posts in 30 minutes, your gold earned will be 10,10,10,10,5,5,5,5,3,3 and eventually drop down to 1g per wink The same goes for voting, reviewing and everything else.

Polls can be created on any new thread, if the first person decided to make one. The thread will say[ Poll ]before the subject line. Click on the thread, and you can vote there and earn gold.
Note: this is not the same as voting for the Avatar Spotlight

IMPORTANT: If you post spam comments in the Art Arena or Link List, gold will be deducted from your account. Also, spam is not allowed anywhere except in Chatterbox. If you post spam messages elsewhere, you can get in trouble sad

<center>How To Earn Gold</center>
Alot of people ask what the easiest way to earn gold is. The easiest way to earn gold is by posting alot. Here are some other ways to earn fast gold.
1: Sponsor Links
--When you log onto Gaiaonline there are some sponsor links under your avatar. Every 12 hours you can click on 2 or 3 of these, then another in the Link List. This will give you ABOUT 60 gold.

2: Polls
--Every 24 hours or so, you will get gold for answering 10 polls. It's best to wait about 10-15 seconds between polls. This should get yout 100gold.

3: Link Reviews
--Visit the Link List, and every 12 hours or so submit 1 or 2 reviews. This will get you ABOUT 60 gold each time.

4: Art Arena
--Visit the Art Arena, comment on the art and give it a rating. This should earn you about 10gold each time. I'm not sure of the maximum you can earn or how often. But remember DO NOT spam in the Art Arena. Each time you spam, you lose 100gold.

5: Start a Shop
--Got some creativity in your blood? Goto the minishops forum and start a shop. Pixels, pets, wishlists, anything works ^^

Along with those, there are ways to report specific posts as well as whole threads, guilds and even journals. You will see a button to click on and fill out a form for reporting. Make sure to be specific and provide as much detail as you can, including any links to threads that may be needed.

After filling out any form, you will be given a reference number for your report. Make sure to write it down. Each reference number is unique and associated with that specific report so the same thing can not be reported twice. If there is a problem with how your report has been handled, and you don't have youre reference number, that's bad news for you.

The reporting system is reserved for reporting things that are only in violation of the GAIA ToS, as well thread move requests and spamming the wrong forum. However, abusing the report system will result in being banned from the site.

To see if your report has been dealt with, look in your "sentbox". If the report has been taken care of you will see this image next to the report: User Image

. This hammer means that a moderator has dealt with the report. You may see the same report in your sentbox two or three times. This just means that multiple moderators took up the report before anyone got to marking it off as being taken care of.

What is the story behind your gaia name? Well, it used to be Mamimi Samejima, a character from a popular anime. ninja Then I met my boyfriend, and he was like.. "You should so totally change your name to match mine." (his being Bobby Daniels, his real name.) ... and I did. xd
How did you hear about gaia? I heard about it on one of my friends journals. She showed her Gaia character and a little bit about the place, and I was like " surprised Cool. *signs up*" Originally I was going to just lurk around and dress my character, but I decided not to do that. Once I learned how hard it was to earn gold I started spamming because I wanted my avatar to look like Chii. gonk I wanted everything to be right, and I noticed a lot of people used 'normal' names instead of screennames on Gaia, so I have an abandoned account somewhere with a noobish name.. *end rant*
What kept you playing? Definately the characters more than anything else. xd Secondly, the people I met were so nice. Plus, it was a long time since I had attended a forum; and I knew from the start Gaia would be something huge.
What was your initial reaction when you got the invite to be a moderator? "OMGWTFLOL...WHYDIDTHEYPICKME?!" .. It was around 7am when I got the news so immediately I was just like... "oh.. I must still be dreaming. *yawn*" I came back a couple hours later and the PM was still there, so I was like... eek I didn't really do much but I quietly celebrated. Many of my friends that I told at first were happy for me, some were jealous. A couple of my friends just stopped talking to me. sweatdrop
What forum(s) do you mod? I mod Chatterbox, Music (and the Rap/HipHop/R+B Subforum), Welcome to Gaia, and the Test Forum.
Why did you designate yourself to those forums?
Chatterbox: I've always had a strange attraction to it.. it's like a car wreck, you try and try not to look at it but you just can't help it!
Music: I love music, more specifically hip hop. Without music I don't know where I'd be. Welcome to Gaia: I've been a "regular" there ever since the forum was created. Maybe I have really high standards, but I really,... really don't want Gaia to become Neopets, in user quality. (Not features, since we're nowhere near them in features. We're far above them kthx ninja )
