The building itself resembles a warehouse on the outside; imposing, but ultimately plain and unremarkable.

However, stepping through a small door on the side of the building, you're suddenly overwhelmed by more hustle and bustle than should be allowed in a warehouse- which doesn't even look like a warehouse on the inside. People chatter at each other in a mix of English, a strange foreign language, and psychic projections, travelers pass through on their way to elsewhere, and a large iron door in the back of the main hall is heavily guarded.

This is the Neilani embassy. A place where travelers from Gaia's sister world gather before arriving and departing. Some are on vacation, some are with the Neilani military, some are settling permanantly on Gaia...

And there are a few others. Children. Weighted down with luggage and gifts from home, they stagger nervously out of the back, completely overwhelmed.

Although they are obviously nervous, they still remain strong. After all, they are here to study Gaia. They are here to learn. They are here to experience.

If only they could figure out where their host families had run off to...

The Neilani are a human-like race that evolved elsewhere in the galaxy, on a planet named Neilan. Physically, they ARE human. They breathe the same air, have the same physical structure, and require the same nutrition. They, however, have evolved slightly beyond humans in that they have developed strong empathy. They communicate verbally and through writing, and their empathy is meant to supplement that. A select few are "strong" enough to learn and master telepathy, but such individuals are rarely even heard of, let alone seen.

In general, Neilani are more slender than their Gaian counterparts, although there always are exceptions. They also tend to age slightly slower, but it's difficult to tell until one reaches middle age.

Children:
When Neilani children first arrive on Gaia, they tend to be extremely apprehensive of their surroundings. It's a strange new world, and all children tend to be overwhelmed by the sights, sounds, smells, and people of Gaia.

Their empathy is already fully developed, and isn't likely to improve much over time.

Teenagers:
At this point, the student will return to Neilan, and will be asked to decide what they want to do with their lives. They have many options, but they can be broken up into the following groups:
  • Returning to Neilan
    The child returns to Neilan permanantly. They may still visit Gaia (and may one day change their minds and settle on Gaia), but for the most part, their lives are carried out on Neilan.
  • Remaining on Gaia
    The child decides to settle on Gaia. They may still visit (and perhaps return permanantly to) Neilan, but would spend their lives as a Gaian.
  • Becoming an Agent
    The Agents are an elite subsect of the Neilani Defense Force (NDF). They focus on observing and protecting Gaia from threats that may find their way through the gate to Neilan. They may leave the service at any time (Through honorable (or dishonorable) discharge), but if they become Awakened, then they are in service for life.

Neilani teenagers differ from normal Gaian teenagers in the sense that they don't seem to be as preoccupied with hormones. They may be searching for their "one twu wuv (tm)", but it doesn't normally take priority. Other than that, they could easily be mistaken as human.

Young Adults:
Older, wiser, and more proficient in their skills, young adults are ready to face the world. While as teenagers, they may have received support from the Neilani government, they have to fend for themselves at this point. It's a scary world, but most rise to the challenge quickly. Those who chose to become Agents are now finished with their training and are sent into the field.

Adults:
Now fully grown, the adult's focus may be not on supporting themselves, but on supporting others and perhaps raising families. They may be successful business owners, teachers, mentors, diplomats... anything their heart desires. If they are Agents, they may be given command and more responsibilties. At this point, RP is no longer REQUIRED, but it is highly recommended.

Awakened:
After merging their consciousnesses with a God, a Neilani changes. They become smarter. Stronger. Faster. More alert. Some Awakened Neilani describe it as having a spirit guide. At this point, there are literally two beings occupying one mind, and it may be overwhelming. The Gods will often make suggestions, but the nature of these suggestions depend on the nature of the God itself.

At times, the God can gain greater influence over their host; this causes physical changes to the Neilani's body as long as this influence is present. All eye color will vanish, and the eyes may glow. Ears become long and pointed. Black, swirling markings appear on both sides of the face and extend all the way down to the ankles. Some Neilani are able to throw their own energy (Fireballs, anyone?) While in this state.

A God CAN be forced from the mind of a Neilani (or it may voluntarily leave). This will result in the former host being forced into a state of confusion (and sometimes insanity) for quite some time as they are left with what feels like a gaping hole in their soul. In very rare cases, the vacated host may be injured or even die as a result. There will be some memory loss from the time period during which the Neilani was Awakened.

In the beginning, the Gods created twin worlds; Gaia and Neilan. Both planets were identical in every way, right down to the species planted on them. Many Neilani faiths believe the creation of two worlds, rather than one, was meant to keep balance in the universe, but a few scholars have a different theory:

Neilan and Gaia were experiments.

In their realm of accelerated time, Gaia and Neilan developed. Like all twins, each world had differences to balance out the similiarities... until something curious happened.

A new species- humans- began to evolve on both worlds.

Fascinated by this new development, the Gods began to watch them closely.

The humans on Gaia seemed to evolve the fastest; rapidly growing, developing new technologies at amazing speed, and soon branching out and conducting experiments of their own.

The humans on Neilan, however, lacked. While their Gaian counterparts were basking in the warmth of fire, they huddled together in the cold; barely able to walk upright. While Gaians had language, the Neilani were still communicating in strangled grunts.

It was then that the Gods had an idea.

They briefly descended to both Gaia and Neilan, keeping themselves well-hidden as they constructed a gate between the worlds. They hoped that the development would encourage the Gaian civilization to share their knowledge with their less fortunate brothers, and for Neilan to eventually do the same when they caught up.

Unfortunately, things didn't work out that way. After a few eons of stagnation, the Gaians sealed their side of the gate, feeling their slower Neilani brothers had slowed them down with their incompetance. Better to let them fend for themselves instead of mooching off the more fortunate, they thought.

Such feelings eventually led to even stronger feelings of bitterness, resentment, distaste, and eventually hate. The hate spread, and wars were born. The creation of wars brought stagnation, and in a few eon's time, Gaia was plunged into an age of darkness.

On Neilan, however, something very different happened. The sealing of the gate seemed to spark a technological revolution as the Neilani became even more motivated to succeed. In half the time, twice the advancements had been made by the Neilani. While the Gaians fought, the Neilani cooperated with each other and continued expanding. When the dark ages began on Gaia, the Neilani had already evolved past their normal bounds, mastered flight... and had learned how to force the gate open.

Eager to see what kind of developments their brothers had made, a few Neilani explorers managed to force the Gaian side of the gate open and were appalled at what they saw on the other side. Death, destruction, disease..

It was then that they decided they would fulfill the gate's purpose and use it to aid their brotthers. Within years, the dark ages had ended thanks to a few silent, meddling Neilani.

The Gods were impressed by this display, and once again descended on Neilan. They sought out the small band of Neilani who had decided to assist Gaia, and told them the real reason why Gaia was so full of hate.

Long ago, a handful of Gods, dissatisfied with the way in which the experiment was progressing, had decided to demonstrate humanity's worthlessness by exploiting their capacity for hatred. They had failed on Neilan, where such concepts did not exist, but on Gaia, it was no small feat to fan the smoldering coals of hate into a raging fire. Using a technique known only to their people, they would meld their consciousness with a human, and then use their godlike abilities in that form to command worship, fear, and control over the humans.

The Gods had been struggling unsuccessfully to bring these rogues to justice, but to no avail. Perhaps, in this case, it would be best to use similiar tactics against them. With the Gods' powers and Neilani ingenuity...

Maybe, just maybe...

6. This is MY (Junyi's) art. I drew it, I colored it. It's not much, but it's mine. Do not steal or claim it as your own, please.

Flatsale-Specific Rules:
1. Flatsales are an RP-contest format, and they begin the instant the flatsale prompts are posted. This may be slightly before or after the posted time. All flatsales last 24 hours unless otherwise stated.
2. There will be one prompt per child available in the flatsale. One will be a relatively long passage to respond to; the remaining will be single-sentence prompts so that I can get a grasp of your RP style. All must be answered.
3. No prompt response is to exceed 500 words. Please keep these short and sweet.
4. PM all prompt responses to Lillian Haladet.
5. When sending in your prompt response, please state which child is your first choice, followed by your second choice, etc.
6. Do not post prompt responses in the thread!
7. Payment (6k) is due IMMEDIATELY after the winners are announced. You will not get your cert or your log until you are paid in FULL.
8. Please do not discourage, threaten, or otherwise attempt to force others not to participate in a flatsale.
9. I reserve the right to disqualify entries for any reason. Don't be a jerk, and you don't have to worry about this rule.

Auction-Specific Rules:
1. Do not whine, threaten, or make sob stories designed to discourage others from bidding against you.
2. No editing or retracting bids.
3. At the end-time of the auction, all bids must sit for ten minutes before being declared the winner. This means the auction MAY extend past its scheduled end time.
4. The only items I will accept are donation letters and items, and they will be taken at MINIMUM GEN value. No more than twelve items in a bid, please. (NOTE: I do not accept April or May '04 letters or items)
5. Payment is due immediately after the auction ends and the winner is announced.
6. I reserve the right to refuse bids, but I will always give a reason for doing so.

RP-Specific Rules:
1. RP is required! The minimum RP requirement is one post in your log per month.
2. If you will be taking a hiatus, please post it in the journal where I will be sure to see it! (New posts are preferred) This post should be updated once every other month to alert me of your status. If you fail to notify me, the student will be taken away.
3. RPing in the guild is NOT required (outside of logs). If you RP with your student in other threads, please link it in the logs so I may see.
4. No god-moding, even while in god-mode.
5. Keep chatspeak, 1337, and other zany moon languages to a minimum.
6. I prefer paragraph-style RP, but I will accept just about anything as long as it doesn't break the above rule. Emoticons are allowed. 3nodding

Why won't this thread show up in my Subscribed Threads list?
Unfortunately for all involved, the shop mule was made some time after December 14th, so all threads she creates will never show up on subscribed threads lists, and all threads she posts in will drop off of them. Sorry! crying

How do I become a host to a student?
As of now, you can only receive a child through flatsales, auctions, pet trades, or the ever-popular bribe. In the future, I may hold free contests, and I also may give one away to extremely active non-owner RPers. ninja

Are the names you give them their ACTUAL names?
Nope! They're nicknames I give them so I don't have to refer to them by number. When you adopt a student, you pick their birth name. Their family/friends back home will refer to them by the name you pick.

Of course, if you want to keep calling them by their nicknames, go ahead! biggrin

How many students may I take care of?
One, for now. I may relax this rule in the future.

Why the forced RP?
This shop is less about the pets and more about the plot. I've had this particular plot festering in my mind for about four years, and just recently I got the bright idea that maybe I should share it with others. It's no fun creating a plot if people don't participate!

So how are YOU going to keep MY interest?
I'll try my very hardest! The second post in all Neilani logs will be for prompts, which I hope to keep updated often. I won't make a post every week and expect you to keep up; rather, I will update them about as frequently as you reply to them. That way you don't get overwhelmed, hopefully! If you feel I'm giving you too many prompts (or not enough), let me know.

How long do these take to grow?
Although Neilani are supposed to age slower than Gaians, it would be pretty unfair if I deliberately slowed their growing to like, a year to a stage. Thus, their growth depends on their RP. Their appearance in the next stage of growth depends on how they're played, so I need a good idea of THAT before I draw them!

In short: The more you RP, the faster they grow. :B

Lillian's pushing my student to join the military! Do they HAVE to enlist?
NO. Do not feel obligated to take on any character developments just because Lillian suggests them! She does have an agenda. She will be pushy. She also, however, knows when to walk away. There is no specific reward for enlisting (There can be rewards, yes, but there can be rewards for ANY career path), and there is no punishment for NOT enlisting. Please do not take Lillian's suggestions as law.

What happens if my student decides to live on Neilan after childhood?
Since you roleplay the child, you ultimately decide their fate. If they remain on Neilan, you will still roleplay them. There will be many locations on Neilan to RP in, and characters to interact with. The student can also correspond with their old host family through letters.

How does a Neilani become Awakened?
By merging their consciousness with one of the Gods. The opportunity is EXTREMELY rare, as the Gods look for impressive qualities in a Neilani to merge with. The opportunity will be presented to those who RP their Neilani frequently and exceptionally over a long period of time, and the opportunity may be auctioned even more infrequently. However, how the Neilani is played determines what KIND of God they merge with...

Is Co-owning allowed?
Yes! They are staying with Gaian families, after all. If you are going to co-own with someone else, please let me know! Please note, however, that flatsales should only be entered by individuals. If you're that worried, simply have the other party (or parties O_O) enter seperately. Think of it as extra chances to win.

A word of caution about co-owning. ONE person must be designated as the guardian in case something goes screwy. In flatsales, this will be the person who won. In auctions... please come to some form of agreement. This is to cover my butt in case friendships fall apart, couples break up, etc.

Will you do customs?
Yes, eventually. Such opportunities would be limited to pet trades and auctions, though.

Do you take bribes?
Yes. I prefer not to think of it as me being greedy; I prefer to think of it as rewarding those who are so interested in the plot that they would give up insane things to be a part of it. *cough If you are actually crazy enough to spend that kind of gold on these, you may PM Junyi about it. Bribing will get you a custom Neilani child and also a spot on the "Bag of Nuts". When one person bribes, the bribery item will CHANGE, and will usually have a greater value than the last one.
