Welcome to GeNtech Labs.
I suppose you are wondering why we have recently "opened our doors" to the public, so to speak. I shall answer those questions shortly.
For the past while, we have been working on a.. project. The resultant species we have termed the "Layhr". The goal of this project has been set incredibly high: create a creature with the perfect genetics and perfect mindset, to suit out purposes. I can not and will not divulge information on what those purposes are, however, so please do not waste my time or your own by asking. At any rate, this brings us to the point of why you are here.

As you can imagine, not every attempt in such a project has been successful. The question therefore arises, how to deal with these attempts? One of our lab technicians made a brilliant suggestion. He noted how popular animal... "companions" seem to be, and suggested that we make use of this. Instead of keeping these creatures here, wasting resources to feed them and maintain them, why not try to regain some of our lost profit by selling them to the interested public? So, here is where you come in.

What you are looking at are the failures of our project. The rejects who, quite simply, didn't make the cut. They failed to serve our purposes, and are of no use to us any longer.

Depending on how early we realized they were failures determines which stage of life you will get them at. Most are past their childhood, so I 'apologize' to anyone who was looking for a cute cub to raise. Most of our specimens are juvenile/adolescent, though we do have some that are already fully grown. The adults are the ones who almost made the cut, or whose inherent faults didn't show through until they were mature. They have... been through... a lot, and as such, their genetics may not be entirely stable. It's possible that they will change again, but as they have already proven failures, there is no need for us to check that. Keep in mind, we cannot guarantee the safety of any of these specimens, so if you'll please sign the waiver acknowledging that GeNtech takes no responsibility for any accidents or injury you may incur after adoption, we can move on our way.

The Layhr are an interesting breed. You may note similarities to other creatures in them; needless to say several genetic features have been spliced in, so we do get a bit of variety. The overall build tends to be the same, and most of them seem to have some type of horn growth, as well as unusual markings that, while present in most all, vary for each individual. Manes also seem to be a standard trait. The tails tend to differ a bit, but I've noticed two distinct styles, though a strange fin variation has been cropping up lately. On occasion, you will see a Layhr with wings. Other traits have been showing up randomly lately that thoroughly vex me, as I don't recall any permission being granted to include them... but that is not your concern.

As you will see, we've taken to marking all of our specimens with a uniquely isotope-based "ink" of sorts. The half-life is much longer than the lifespan of any given Layhr that we've encountered, and it cannot be removed. As well as making identification easier, the marks also serve as names. We use the Roman numeral system, so the creatures progress from I (one) to II (two) III (three) IV (four) V (five) and so on. Regrettably, some of the markings may be in incorrect order (For instance, IIV instead of III) because a few of our lab technicians get a bit.. ah, nervous.. when applying the ink. These marks also help us claim ownership, as we've been having some... trouble lately with an unknown individual or individuals making raid attempts on our lab and attempting to steal subjects. Any information that may lead to the identification or capture of these individuals would be greatly appreciated, and if it proves to be correct, properly rewarded.

If at the end of our tour you choose to adopt, we will restrain the Layhr of your choice and place it in a holding container. This is for your safety as well as its own; we wouldn't want things getting out of hand, now, would we? Keeping it in the container will help it adjust and calm down... we have too many personel walking around for you to safely walk it out, even if you had a muzzle and chain on it. They don't get along with some of us very well... At any rate, it may take a while for it to get accustomed to a new voice and face, so don't worry if it stays in its box for a while. I can't imagine it wanting to stay locked up too long, especially if you keep food outside of the container.

Here at GeNtech Laboratories, we have a few little things I like to call Rules. They make the world go round, so please follow them, unless you want to face the consequences*...


General Rules

  • Absolutely, positively, without a doubt in the world, DO NOT STEAL MY ART. This includes visual, writing, and idea!

  • Please read the front page. It explains a lot, and most likely it will have the answer to your question.

  • Do not beg, harass, or try to bribe me or any of the handlers for a Layhr. It's rude, it's annoying, and if anything, you'll be farther from getting one than you were in the first place.

  • Please be respectful in the thread. If someone makes an arse of themselves, you don't need to be an arse back. Even if they are being an idiot. I'll deal with them.

  • Please, avoid n00b speak in my thread. If I can make the effort to spell and use grammar, so can you. I'm not asking you to be perfect, not by far, I'm just asking for a bit of effort.

  • In-thread RP is fine and fun, but do NOT powerplay. It's irritating to everyone. Get it? Good.

  • Do not PM me asking if you can have a Layhr! Flatsales and events will be announced in the thread. If there isn't a flatsale/event going on, you can't get a Layhr. Pet trades are a different story, but I am very picky, so don't be offended if I say no.


Handler Rules

  • Layhr ARE now RP-required pets. I work too hard on these guys to have them sit around in people's signatures. This does not affect old owners, only new ones; because I don't think it's fair to change that on them.

  • Old owners, I'd love it if you jump in and RP with us. Some of you already do, and for that, I'm very grateful. You guys have the most Layhr. Please join in the fun. =D However, I still do expect you guys to be active in the thread, as per the old rules say. If I don't see you around... you might get your Layhr taken away.

  • Journals are NOT required, though you can make one if you want to.

  • You may NOT resell your Layhr to anyone. If you don't want them anymore, talk to me, we'll work something out... but I don't want to see ownership changing hands without my knowledge and consent. Thanks!

  • You may own up to two first generation Layhr, and one second generation. This is subject to change, but as it stands right now, I work very hard on these and don't want to see one person hoarding them all. XD

  • No Co-Ownership right now. It's too confusing. And I don't want to have to deal with any potential arguments if the co-owners stop getting along.

  • If you want your Layhr to grow, you're going to have to be present in the thread. I will not grow any Layhr if the handler is not present, because I'm a comment whore and I want to see reactions to the art. XD

  • If you "Buy and Run", or in other words, don't show up for like, ever, I reserve the right to take your Layhr away and give him or her a better home. I don't want them to rot in people's collections! I'll warn you if you're running the red line, but if you still don't come in after that, I'm revoking handler's rights. Depending on the circumstances, there may or may not be a refund.


Roleplay Rules

  • First off, and this applies to all RP situations as well as any arguments in thread... As the owner, and artist, and creator of this shop, MY WORD IS LAW. No ifs, no ands, no buts. I try my best to be fair in my judgements, and if you have a question about it, feel free to PM me, BUT DO NOT ARGUE ABOUT IT IN THREAD. Please? Thanks.

  • If I pass my judgement, and you continue to whine and/or argue about it, you may very well be greylisted. o_o I'm not saying this to be mean, I'm saying this because- well- please respect my stance as shopkeeper. I want to make things run as smoothly as possible, and if people don't listen to me or start arguing with me, I can't do that. So don't argue. =3

  • Obviously, please keep in mind Gaia's PG-13 TOS. I shouldn't have to say this, but just in case.

  • Having fights break out (IC) amongst Layhr or humans is perfectly fine. I don't expect all of them to get along. Injuries will happen, feelings will be hurt. But you may NOT kill or mortally wound anyone's character, unless it's for plot that you've cleared with me beforehand.

  • DO NOT POWERPLAY. My god, I cannot stress this enough. I'm going to be a lot more bitchy about this now that these guys are RP required. I don't care if we're just playing around in the thread, or if it's formal RP... if you act like a twink, I'll call you on it, and I will not be happy. I know it's hard for some of you to understand what powerplaying exactly is, since the definition seems to differ slightly from person to person, but I hope you all understand the basic concept of what NOT to do.

  • Since it's hard for me to draw the line between what constitutes powerplay and normal RPing for the human side of things, I'll make it easy. As an owner in this thread, you've got normal human abilities. You are not a magic ninja who can poof through walls, shadows, magic bags, or pick a fight with an armed guard and win. Out of character, this allows me to be much more clear in what I expect people not to do. In character, it makes sense- think about it. You're hanging around a high tech scientific facility. Do you REALLY think it's a good idea to be doing anything out of the ordinary?

  • If you plan on your Layhr having some kind of special ability or trait, you must talk to me and clear it through me beforehand. I've already given basic descriptions of Layhr in flatsales and auctions, and if you've got a question about what they can/cannot do, please ask. So this mostly applies to customs or trades. If you have a problem with this, please keep in mind- I created these creatures. I know what they can and cannot do. And my word here is law.

  • If I catch anyone powerplaying or just being a bit askew as far as the RP rules go, I will DM the situation. (DM stands for Dungeon Master- essentially, I'll take over the situation and set things how they logically should be.) If you've just picked a fight with something a lot bigger and stronger than you, and are omg pwnzing it, expect to be the one getting pwnzd.

  • For casual RP, I don't mind the use of astericks. But if we're getting into a formal RP situation, please use storytelling format. It makes it less blocky and it makes it easier to work with. =3

  • If there is RP going on, please put all non-RP posts in ((parenthesis)).

  • Please, try to avoid one liners. I know that a lot of RP has been done that way in this thread before, and I have nothing really against it... but the reason I ask this is because, if you only type one line, it's really hard for other people to respond to you. If your Layhr walks in and *tilts his head then sits down*, there is not really anything to respond to. And you may be unintentionally ignored. So please, put some effort into the posting, at least make it a few sentences long and give us something to work with.

  • As an owner, you are responsible for knowing what your Layhr can and cannot do. I have put together notes on this, to try and make things more clear. If you don't understand something, don't be afraid to ask... I really don't mind explaining. But don't be upset if I comment mid-RP that ((Sorry guys, but Layhr can't do that.))

  • A note on the shop's NPCS: Guess what, guys? The guards do have guns. And the scientists have the power to kick you off of GeNtech's property. While it's fun (for both sides) to get into verbal disagreements, I really don't suggest you actively harass them. And out of all the people you can't pwnz for no good reason, these are some of the most important. ((If the guard gets into an RP with a Layhr and winds up getting his a** kicked that way, that's his fault. But don't try to "save the day" and omg beat him up. Okay?))


* Consequences include, but are not limited to, you being given to II as a playtoy, your Layhr (if you're a handler) being taken away, or (if you aren't in charge of a Layhr) never being able to get one. Ever.

What are Layhr?
Layhr are a canine-like species that was created by GeNtech Laboratories. The Layhr you find here are the 'failures' of the Project...

How can I get one?
Check the Acquisition section for more information there.

How much do they cost?
Flatsale Layhr cost 5k.

How many stages are they?
Each Layhr goes through about three stages. If they're a teen or an adult when you get them, then you'll receive a crate as their first stage, then teen/adult as second, then adult/full as third. Only cubs don't have the crate stage.

Are they unique lineart?
I draw each one differently. So yes, they are unique lineart. It's also why they cost so much, and grow slowly.

How long do they take to grow?
It depends. They don't grow as quickly as most pets, because I have to draw and color each stage. Plus, I want to give people an opportunity to RP each stage if they want to... so it'll be a few weeks, at least. I may ask if you want your Layhr to grow to the next stage before I grow it, if you seem to be having fun with that age.

How can I get a cub?
You can't get a cub at a flatsale. Only through a special event, or breeding. (Customs and pet trades as well, but those don't happen very often.)

How can I get my Layhr into full-form?
If you got your Layhr as an adult, he or she will automatically proceed to full-form as their final stage. Otherwise, they'll stop at adult... though there may be certain opportunities. ninja

Pet Trades? Customs?
Check the Acquisition section, please. With pet trades, it doesn't hurt to ask, but I am very picky, so please don't be offended if I decline your offer.

Layhr? Layhrs? What is the single and plural?
Not so much a question, but something I've noticed... the single AND plural of Layhr is "Layhr". If you say "Layhrs", I'm gonna beat you with a foam noodle. X3

Can they speak English? How do we communicate?
Layhr cannot 'speak' English, because they physically can't make those noises. They can definitely understand it, though. (That doesn't mean they'll do anything you ask, though; they are free-willed, sentient beings, afterall.) You'll just have to learn their body language, and come up with your own way of interacting.

Can Layhr talk to eachother?
Yes, they can most definitely communicate with one another. This is generally done in a mixture of growls, rumbles, and howls (among other things.) Though for sake of understanding, you can always just translate it into English. X3

What's with the eye glowing? OOO! Can mine have red eyes?!
Layhr eyes glow WHITE. It isn't yet known if this is genetic, or if it's due to how they've been created, but it's how they are. No, you cannot have one with red eyes, because only in the case of rare genetic mutations will the eyes do anything other than glow white.
