Welcome to Gaia! ::

User Image
As you stroll through the Breedable/Changing pets market of Gaia, you come across a ramshackle store that you don't recognize. The walls have not yet been painted and the sign above the door was little more than a poster board with sharpie written on it. It says 'Kirntaur Laboratories.'
You wonder to yourself, 'What's a corn-tur?' You had certainly never heard of that before. And then you hear a bleating sound.
"Breea! Breea!" A strange, unfamiliar creature makes noises at you. It is tied to a stake by a simple dog leash and collar. But this is no dog. Its ears are large and floppy, its feet are two-toed hooves, and adorning its head are blunt, giraffe-like horns. You assume that this is a kerter, or however it's pronounced.
User Image
Suddenly, a slipper flies through the open window of the store. "Shut it up out there, 'Ko," A girl's voice calles out, irritated. "You're going to scare all those half-angel-half-demon-gothic-winged-elemental-neko-kitty-puppy monstrosities they're trying to sell at that pet shop down the street." The source of the voice peeked her head out the window to toss a serious look at the beast.
User Image
The bespectacled girl notices you. "Great Barber of Pearl Harbor! It's a customer!" She disappears back through the window and runs out the door to greet you. "Hey! Welcome to Kirntaur Labs!" Hearing it out loud, you find that 'Kirntaur' rhymes with 'burn far.' "Sorry the place looks so ramshackle, we're still getting everything prettified."
She leads you inside. The store is small, and not very professional looking. None of the animals are properly restrained, they lounge around on piles of cedar chips on the floor. The building looked bigger than this from the outside...perhaps the bulk of the space was behind a door in the back labeled 'Employees Only (unless you brought a bribe).'
"If you're interested in adopting one of our animals, we've got brochures and pamphlets and other official document-type papers to explain how to take care of them." She hands you a few papers. From the font and quality of paper, it's painfully obvious that she made them with Microsoft Word on her home computer. "You can also go around and get to know the Kirns. Don't worry, they're trained not to bite. I'll be back here if you need anything, just knock." She quickly slips behind the 'Employees Only' door, leaving you with the animals. It's a bit odd that she left the place unattended; you could easily run off with the cash register...unless these Kirntaurs are trained for other things as well...

((Welcome to Kirntaur Laboratories! One of the goals of our shop is to be accessible to everybody, while still having incentives for veterans. If you're a new member roaming around for their first pet, you are in no danger of getting trampled over in flatsales by the oldbies. There will be enough for everyone. And if you intend to stick around and create your own little Kirn flock, there are lots of rare breeds that you can collect...for enough cash. Because MegaRose is greedy that way.
Most of the Kirntaur experience comes from the guild. There you can find in-depth info on different breeds, set up your own Kirn journals, roleplay, and order stuff directly from the Kirn colorists. It's not necessary to go there regularly to get a Kirntaur...but it is if you want to get involved in the Kirn Community. The guild is public.))

Announcements

Now that all of Mega's current flatsale/gift Kirns are grown she's going to be putting the shop on hiatus indefinitely until it can be better organized. The item contest is still on and the offer for a co-manager still stands.

Kirntaur item-making contest!

July 18, 2005-
The few people who ever come into this thread know that it's not very active in here. The truth is, I'm not very good at managing the shop, especially while I'm focusing on my lineart auction. I have tons of concepts I want to integrate into the shop, and I'm ready and willing to do plenty of art, but I have no business sense and no clue how to make this place succeed.
I started this shop with a partner to manage the business side of things, allowing me to focus on art, but he hasn't had internet access for a while now and quite frankly has little experience in the Breedables forum to begin with. I'd like to announce that a position for co-manager for Kirntaur Labs will be open.
To apply, please PM MegaRose with why you'd make a good manager. I'm looking for someone who can:
-Organize my ideas and integrate everything into the shop without confusion
-Keep track of colorist sales and the 25% profit that comes to the Labtech311 account
-Deal with customer questions and comments
-Draw in business through events and advertising
-Help me launch an affiliation and linking reward system (y'know, like those art contests have been doing lately)
-Divvy up the Labtech311 account's gold and distribute the salaries for the managers, uploader (Tsumirei), etc.
-Bring the current absent manager [ Dead.Rest ] up to speed when he returns
-Other stuff
The co-manager gets access to the shop mule, crew status in the guild, and a cut of the 25% colorist profit kept in the Labtech311 account. The co-manager will also have authority to approve lineart edit requests, and start and maintain auctions, raffles, and events. The job will also involve a lot of conversations with me through PMs about different ideas and stuff.
Don't worry, even if no co-manager is chosen, the shop will still go on. However, it'll be in the state it's currently in: very slow, and a little chaotic. So please, if you think you're capable, drop me a PM.

Read ALL these rules before purchasing a Kirntaur.
User Image No art theft. Any improper use of Kirntaur images, including banners, tags, lineart, individual colored pets, etc. Is bannable and illegal.
If you want to use our images for something, you must ask MegaRose for permission and give a good reason for using them.
User Image Use understandable grammar. Chatspeak, lack of capitalization, lack of punctuation, poor spelling, and general misuse of the English language will get you nowhere. You will be ignored.
User Image Do not beg. No, we will NOT give you any of our gold. We will NOT sell you our 8k Kiki Kitty for 300g 'bcuz ur new.' And we certainly will NOT give you a free pet out of the blue.
User Image No harassment of other users. If you have a beef with someone, talk to them somewhere else. That includes staff members; if you have a complaint for one of the Kirn staff just confront us about it, don't spam about it in the thread.
User Image No picture flaming. By this I mean the ever-so-lame practice of taking a picture (usually stolen from some other part of the internet) with an insult on it and posting it in response to what someone else said.
Seriously, people. Stealing a panel from your favorite webcomic and using its jokingly semi-offensive dialogue as if it were your own response to something is not only lazy and lame, but it wastes your time.
User Image All Gaia site rules apply. That's a given, I'd hope.
User Image When in the guild, all guild rules apply. They're more or less the same as the thread rules, but just in case I change something, make sure you know what's what.
User Image When dealing with a specific colorist, all of their rules apply. The exception is when they have rules that contradict the overall rules, in which case please report it to MegaRose.
User Image Do not PM Labtech 311. Lab-chan is a shop mule, and PMs to that account will be ignored. If you have a question for a colorist, go to that colorist. If you have a question about one thing or another, go to the person who deals with that. Check the staff list.

As you are left out in the front room, the bespectacled lass moves through the back areas. It looks like a makeshift laboratory, albeit a low-budget one. One wall is entirely consumed by stacks of beat-up cardboard boxes. There's a beaker here, a microscope there, a computer in the corner (it's probably four or five years old). Two men are in the room. One lounges in a folding chair, and the other is bent over a microscope.
The girl gives a quick kiss on the cheek to the handsome bluenette in the chair. "Hey, Denath. Labby. We might just have a customer!"
"Yay Rosey!" Denath, the ever-so-adorable-sexy-bluenette clings happily to the girl.
The other man looks up from his microscope. "Huh. Already? I'm surprised your Barako didn't scare them off."
"Nah, 'Ko couldn't scare a fly. So, are any of the Kirns ready for sale?"
"Hmmm. Those five are ready to find good homes." He gestures to a basket on the ground filled with cushions and five baby Kirntaurs." He smiled. Who would've known his little science experiment would wind up turning into a pet store...

[Kirn origin story here]

Kirns come in many, many different subspecies. The first Kirns were dubbed the 'Origin Species,' and all other types are mutations and alterations of that type. For more information on each type of Kirn, see the guild info thread. All Kirns go through three basic stages (baby, child, adult), and there is no visible difference between males and females.
First-generation Kirntaurs are created in special boxes by our lab specialists. These 'fetus boxes' serve the purpose of a mother's womb, but because Kirns aren't a natural animal, most Kirns aren't born in a natural way. We also use fetus boxes to create new breeds of Kirntaurs. You can even get your own fetus box and create a new subspecies. Fetus box info can be found further down in this thread.

In addition to the Kirns, we've developed a new breed of feline with the obedience and loyalty of a dog, called 'Kirnguards.' They are sheepdogs of a sort, that can keep your Kirns in line for you. Kirnguards are rarer than Kirns, but are sold in more or less the same manner. They also have separate male and female lineart for the adult, which none of the Kirns have.
Flatsales

Flatsales are managed by the individual colorists. Scheduled flatsales will be announced here, with links to the colorists' threads in the guild. There, you have to abide by any rules they have set up. Trades are sent directly to the colorists.

RP events

RP events will be set up in separate threads in the guild, with links here. They're usually prompt writing or actual roleplay, and mostly reserved for fetus boxes and very special Kirns.

Don't ask me when we'll schedule another flatsale/raffle/blah. We'll do it when we do it.
Colorists manage their own breeding slots, customs, and item shops. If you want any of those, see the guild. They won't be dealt with here.
Want a fetus box? I don't care. See, they're pretty delicate, and you can't have one until you've proven yourself capable of caring for one.
Okay, here's the basics of boxes. A fetus box is a life support system containing the fetus of a first-generation Kirntaur. If left alone, the Kirn will grow into one of the existing species (the species of Kirn that's in the box will be specified on a label somewhere). BUT, if you add items to the box (there's a little hatch on the top), the liquid inside will dissolve it and its attributes will be absorbed into the fetus. Thus, new species of Kirntaur will be created. The creator of that type of Kirntaur will not only get a custom lineart Kirn (basic lineart for the species will be made as well), but have a hand in controlling the availability of that species. So we need someone who is both capable of cultivating a Kirn and trustworthy enough to control its kind.
How do you get one? Occasionally, an RP event or auction will pop up for one. Or you could probably bribe MegaRose. Offer her a couple dozen k's and see what happens. Or a pet. She wants pet trades. Anyway, with RP events and auctions, along with your entry/bid you'll have to fill out a little form so that we can tell if you're going to be trustworthy enough to control your Kirn's availability.
We want box owners who are regulars in the Breedables forum, trustworthy (you can have friends vouch for you), and easy to get along with. And literate. You gots to type properly.
If you get a box, there are a few more things you'll need to know:

Stages

Box
Obviously, the fetus boxes are boxes. They have a hatch on the top and a few tube-things sticking out the sides. This is the most critical stage of the Kirn, and the only one that's RP-mandatory (RP will be done in a journal). You must put in items to influence the Kirn (putting fruits in might make a colorful plant Kirn, or putting a knife in might get a clawed Kirn, etc.), as well as interact with it to stimulate its mind (the more you RP the environment around the box, the more intelligent the Kirn species will be). The stage ends when a) you're done influencing the fetus and b) MegaRose has the time to make the next stage.

Baby
This is what all that RP was leading up to. Your Kirn will be released from its box, and you'll finally see what it looks like. It will have custom art made by MegaRose or a guest artist, and you no longer have to RP with it (although it is encouraged). MegaRose will also create a lineart set for its species, and distribute it to the colorists.
Whenever a colorist wants to sell a Kirn of your type, they have to answer to you. You can even demand royalties. If this privelage is abused, it can be taken away, so don't monopolize the Kirns. Also, if you are inactive and colorists can't contact you, MegaRose will take over availability control.

Child
More custom art, and no RP. Nothing special here.

Adult
The final stage, adult Kirns can finally breed. In roleplay, the first of a species is often looked up to by its kind as a leader. Oh, and they can breed with both fetus box Kirns and regular Kirns. Knock yourself out.
Just a spare post. Most info is in the guild, so we don't need a full page. However, if it seems that there's information missing on the front page, don't hesitate to ask about it. Maybe I'll use this post for an FAQ or something.

Yep! I'm even getting a little flatsale ready. (I can color a custom for you, if you want.)
Yaaaaay! Ohh, can I try coloring? xD Even though I'm not a colorist? I don't mind at all! I should create a Photobucket account! xD : surprised pens new window::
