Eh. I'd say every language has its difficult bits. With the Latin based, it's usually the conjugations. With Japanese, I'd say it's a toss up between the counting (Why do cows need a separate counter from horses from pigs from chickens from carts/cars from thin round objects from bigger round objects from flat rectangular objects from...well, you get the point.) and the fact that it is slightly tonal. In random places. With German, I know that I'd have problems with longer sentences because I'd forget what came first while waiting for the end. Also. I find gender assignment of words in languages a bit...confusingly arbitrary.

@Anna - I'm assuming that's an English speaker trying to speak French that does attempt to actually make an attempt at pronouncing things properly.

Eh, it's "tonal-ish", not really tonal. If you ******** up the tone, it's usually just a case of: people still understand you, they just can't place your accent. But yeah, the counters are a b***h - although you can do what I did and just not give a ********. ^_^ Everyone will understand you, you'll just sound like a dork until you pick them up (which I still haven't, really - I usually write and read Japanese, not speak it, so, meh).

But yeah, even if an English speaker tries to fake the accent, it usually still sounds... ugh. If you think of a French speaker talking English - even if their English accent is good, you can still kinda hear the "euwr" when they say words that end in "-er", and they never say the last "l" in words that end in "-ble" right.

Obviously with enough practice you can do it but... generally speaking it hurts French ears to hear French spoken by English speakers - especially Americans who have really nasally accents.

I used to live out that way. There's a vague possibility that I could end up not far from there in a year or so (My lady is looking at UC Davis for her PhD.). But the chances of us working together are kinda slim, Rev.
