Astrid Bane
Picture
Character's Name: Astrid Bane
Character's Age: 17
Birthday: December 21st
Estimated height: 5’9”
Estimated weight: 130 lbs
Character's Grade: 12th
Character's Class Schedule:
English--Honors, 1st period
Science--Honors, 2nd period
Math--Honors, 3rd period
Physical Education--Advanced Girls, 4th period 1/2
Foreign Languages--Chinese, 4th period 2/2
Lunch--5th period 1/2
Homeroom--5th period 2/2
Electives--Career Training, 6th period 1/2
Free Period--6th period, 2/2
History--Honors, 7th period
Character's Interests: Astrid focuses mostly on her academics and her “art” (acting). Since theatre classes are not offered at the school, she takes them after school through a separate academy, as well as taking voice, dance, and fencing competitively. She loves taking care of her younger siblings (Molly, 9, and David, 4), though she doesn’t usually have much time to spare for them. When she’s had a bad day all she wants to do is go and hide in her room, but her family doesn’t let her do that too often.
Character's Poem (because I’m strange like that, and also I can’t find a good song): Richard Cory by Edwin Arlington Robinson
Character's Back Story: Astrid Bane has the perfect life. Her father owns and works at his own law firm and is doing a thriving business, she has two adorable younger siblings, and her stay-at-home mother wants nothing more than to see her be successful in whatever she attempts. Most of the time, this comes easily to Astrid. She was a born actress, singer, dancer, student...anything she attempted, she could succeed at.
And Astrid is completely miserable.
At home, she is caught between two parents in a loveless marriage, both waiting for the “right time” to divorce. Neither of them take much of an interest in her except when she’s winning something or bringing home another A. At school, she is struggling more and more with her classes, but feels obligated to take the most challenging ones she can find, because anything less would be a disappointment to her parents and to herself. To be the best in everything she attempts is the only way she knows, and she will destroy any obstacle that stands in her path. Astrid mostly lacks real friends (most people are scared off by her aggressive and perfectionistic personality) and doesn’t mind it too much. The few friends that she does have know very little about her home situation and her true feelings, since she is, after all, an actress, and is excellent at acting like everything’s fine. Her senior year--supposed to be the best year of her high school career--is off to a miserable start.
Character's Reply Color: Maroon

((Is it OK that she has a free period? She’s a senior, so I have to imagine she’s already taken a social studies class. Also planning on adding more to the profile once I start RPing with this character, because right now I'm not completely sure what direction I'm headed in with her.))

Astrid Bane

Astrid watched the smoke swirl upwards, its grey depths apparent against the burgundy dining room wall.

“Astrid. My eyes are watering.”
It moved with all the fluidity of water, and she thought that its twisting form might have been the loveliest thing she had ever seen.
“Astrid,” her father intoned, his voice angrier than before. Standing up and crossing the room, he licked his fingertips, reached over to the candle and pinched the wick, snapping half of it off in the process. Astrid cringed. “What have I told you about blowing out candles like that? It stinks up the house and it makes my eyes water.”
“It was beautiful.”
“It smelled.” He sounded utterly disgusted, both with it and with her for being stupid enough to appreciate simple smoke. Before Astrid could get a word in, he had returned to his seat and was hiding behind his newspaper again.
Astrid had that old, familiar pit in the bottom of her stomach again. She knew that arguing would only hurt her, so she left the room, taking with her the matches she had used. Dumping them unceremoniously in the kitchen junk drawer, she reflected on the incident. It shouldn’t have bothered her nearly as much as it had, but it was what it was and there was nothing she could do about it. She still felt sick and she had a sneaking suspicion that the feeling wouldn’t go away until she had left the house. Grabbing her worn, beat up boots from the foyer floor, she turned and--

“Astrid, are you still wearing those?”
Sighing, she turned back around. “Yes, mom. They still fit me fine.”
“Honey, they’re falling apart. Don’t you think it’s time for something better?” As her mother spoke, David walked up behind her, an empty sippy cup in his hands.
“Mommy? I want ginger ale.”
“Yes, dear. In a second.”
“These fit me fine,” Astrid insisted, “and they’re really not that bad. These were my Lear boots, remember? When they had me playing Edmund? They have sentimental value.”
“Ginger ale?”
“In a minute,” her mother told David, exasperated. Glancing over Astrid’s shoes, she said again, “You need new ones. It reflects badly on the rest of us when you dress poorly. You know that. If you’d like, I can donate those old ones to Goodwill.”
“I would like to keep wearing these.”
“Well, that’s just not an option, sweetie,” she insisted.
“Ginger ale now?”
“Yes,” she sighed. Picking David up, she turned to Astrid and said, “Get new boots today and I’ll take care of the old ones, alright?”
“Okay,” Astrid said reluctantly. She had no real intention of letting Goodwill have her Lear boots, but it wouldn’t do any good to argue it now.
Her mother smiled approvingly.
“That’s my good girl.” Resting the toddler on her hip, she started back for the kitchen.
Astrid was still feeling sick when she reached the mall. Some of it was because of her parents, but she had done it mostly to herself. She could have spoken up more, made them understand, but she hadn’t. She was worthless when it came to things like that. Most things, really. All she wanted to do was run and hide, but that wasn’t an option. Instead, Astrid forced herself out of her car and into the mall.
She recognized one of the girls standing near the entrance of the building and pegged the other as a freshman immediately. Not just because of age, though that was a big part of it. The main thing was the aura that the freshmen always had, a mix of excitement, nerves, and a supreme confidence in themselves and their abilities. The monotony and inherent corruption of high school would crush her like a bug, Astrid decided, smiling softly to herself, the thought oddly cheering to her. They both were so adorable and naive that she almost felt a twinge of pity. Run while you can, she mouthed silently. Neither of them noticed her. After just a moment of hesitation, she walked up to them. “Are you starting at Mountain View?” she asked the blonde, already guessing that her assumption was correct.

* Cortney Taylor *

Cortney looked at the girl who had walked up to Ryan and herself. The first thing she did was looked her up and down. Cortney usually did this when meeting someone new. After a moment she nodded, "Yep." She said in her chipper voice. She had her trademark adorable smile plastered onto her face.

((Yeah that's totally cool!!! P.S. WELCOME BACK!!!!))

Vivienne Industrix

Vivienne and her brothers came running down the large hallway in the mall waving at Cortney and Ryan, along with the new girl appearing to talk with them. At a closer glance the five teenagers had actually been roller skating down the hall. "Cortney! The dude at the shoe store said that we could test these out!" Vivienne said laughing as she pointed to the fancy roller skates. "Even the mall security signed off on it! Come on maybe they'll give you a pair!" Vivienne said pulling on her hand. But Cortney stayed put blushing in frustration.

"When are you guys going to grow up!?" She said loudly.

The smaller girl stood right in Cortney's face. After a moment she just laughed and leaned against the wall. Vivienne smiled at the girl standing next to Cortney. Nick and Riley looked at the senior girl and Nick whistled quietly. Jeremy and Josh elbowed their younger brothers and smiled at her. Josh stood next to Ryan smiling at her. After Cortney's request they rolled back to the shoe store to give back their skates.

Astrid Bane

Astrid was fully aware of the attention that the boys were paying to her and was surprised to find that she enjoyed it. I've put enough effort into this body, she rationalized, it's about time someone appreciated it, no matter how fleeting their appreciation may be. "Your friends?" she asked the freshman--Cortney--when they were gone. Without waiting for her to respond, she blurted out, "You should have fun while you can." She pushed a strand of hair anxiously behind her ear. The girl definitely wasn't going to listen to her--as a freshman, Astrid wouldn't have listened to herself either--but she had to try anyway. "You should let them, and yourself, have fun right now. Don't try to grow up so fast, because you'll have to soon enough."

Vivienne Industrix

Vivienne rode away with the rest of her childish friends leaving Cortney alone with the senior girl. Sage took off her skates and told the rest of them that she'd go back to Cortney... Vivienne scoffed, "Whatever....We don't need them..." She said stubbornly. She smiled, "Why don't we call Rachael? And didn't she have a sister too?! That would make us even again Bliss!" Vivienne said to her best friend. After Bliss's consent Vivienne pulled out her phone and dialed the number Rachael had given them.

Rachael Kent and Riley Kent

"Well, this clearly pertains to my line of work," her father said, staring down his nose and through his glasses at the device.
"I know," Riley agreed, grinning. "The only question is exactly how it was utilized." She paused. "The torturer could have placed it in the fire beforehand, right? To combine the pain of branding with the clamping sensation that this...thing clearly elicits?"

"It's possible, yes," he conceded, his voice ever serious. "The handle is metal as well, though, and it's far too short to make a practical branding device. To really comprehend its usage, we'd need to find out what period in history it came from."
Riley plucked it out of her father's hand and looked at it more closely. "It looks new to me," she said. Glancing toward the bathroom, where she knew her sister was, she raised her voice and said, "But what modern civilization would be so cruel as to torment its accused so?"

The door opened, right on cue. Glaring at them, Rachael said, "Neither of you would happen to know where my eyelash curler is, would you?"

"That depends on how much it resembles an ancient, sadistic torture device."

Rachael stormed across the living room and jerked it out of Riley's hands. "Thank you," she said coolly, slamming the bathroom door shut again behind her.

"Wait a moment," their father said, his eyebrows drawing together in a knot. "She actually puts that near her face?"
"M-hmm."
"Willingly?"
"Kids these days." Riley shook her head.
"It's mystifying."
Riley couldn't help but laugh. "Dad, you're mystified by toaster ovens. No offense, but eyelash curlers are way out of your league." Giving him an affectionate hug, she headed toward the bedroom that she and Rachael shared. "I'm going to go back over the summer reading, which, sadly, is extremely lacking in Shakespeare. Love you!"
Her father waved a noncommittal goodbye and went back to the newspaper he'd been reading.

Rachael glared at her reflection in the mirror. It, at least, could know how much displeasure she felt. How was she supposed to live a normal life when she was being forced to live with these...freaks? It was too much to bear.
The sound of her phone going off in the next room was perhaps the most welcome thing she'd heard all day. Please be someone normal, please be someone normal.... Dropping her mascara on the counter, she sprinted for her phone, when she heard an awful, awful thing.

"Hello?" Riley said, all warmth and politeness. "This is Riley, 'cause Rachael is slower in the mornings than Prince Hamlet is to take vengeance. It's almost like she cares about her appearance or something. Weird. How may I help you?"

Vivienne Industrix

Vivienne smiled as Riley answered, glad that one of them had answered. "Hi, this is Vivienne...Me and my friends met Rachael at the beach yesterday...And well we're at the mall today and me and my friend are down two people and we were wondering if you and Rachael would like to join us?" Vivienne replied to Riley over the phone. Vivienne chuckled also at how Riley had greeted her over the phone. "And I totally get what you mean...Kids these days right?" Vivienne said in a humorous voice.

Rachael Kent and Riley Kent

"Hey, Vivienne," she said casually. "That sounds like a lot of fun! Just let me tell--"

Vivienne. No, no, no, no, NO! This was so not good. Rachael stood in the doorway, blushing frantically. What could she do? There was only one thing. Sprinting across the threshold, Rachael summoned all of her anger and tackled Riley.

The phone flew out of Riley's hand and smacked into the bedpost on its way to the ground. "Ow," she said faintly, more surprised than actually in pain.

Rachael grabbed her phone and ran out of the room with it. She passed her very confused father and was halfway down the street before she finally stopped. "Hi," she said into the phone, the words coming out as a gasp. Sprinting used to be one of her strong points--she needed desperately to get back into shape before soccer tryouts this year. Ignoring the stabbing in her side, she continued, "Hi. This is Rachael. Please ignore any crashing sounds you heard. What's up?"

Vivienne Industrix

Vivienne pulled the phone from her ear at the sounds coming through, soon she heard Rachael's voice...."Uh...Hi Rachael...Um...So me and Bliss are flying solo with my brothers and Sage and Cortney are doing there own thing right now. So we could use two girls to come and even us out. So I invited you and Riley to the mall with us....We can come and get you if you'd like, we really have nothing better to do...We've got enough room in the truck..." Vivienne suggested sitting down on a bench in the mall.

Rachael Kent

"That would be great," Rachael said hesitantly. "Except...." She couldn't come out and say, I'm sorry, my sister's a weirdo, please don't associate with her, or me either, I might have it too! "Are you sure you want to invite Riley?" she heard herself say. "You guys don't even really know her." Smooth. Especially considering that they don't know you at all either. Silently cursing herself, Rachael waited to hear Vivienne's answer.
