Dawning Redemption

The sun rose on the scarred and battered landscape of Myria. The once beautiful world had not seen sunrise in over a hundred years, having been bound in time by the powerful magics and strong will of the Princess Kikuka. But now, scant days after the Darkness was slain, changes were already visible. Where once barren wastelands had stretched to desolate horizons, grass dared to once again show its bright head to the sun. And where once forests withered in a timeless death, leaves budded, flowers bloomed, and birds went about making up for a century of stasis.
It was a grand day for the coronation of a new Queen.
Symbolically, a new Queen would signify the change in the world since the death and transformation of the previous monarchs, Princess (soon to be queen) Kikukas parents. More practically, in a world such as Myria, it was only common sense that there be some kind of government that could handle the myriad of beings that dwelled within the boundaries of a dream-world. The thought of the chaos that would rise up if no one ruled, or an inefficient government was instituted, was enough to make any of the Saviors, or anyone who fought the Darkness, for that matter, shudder, for in such chaos, who knew what would arise?

Jekk hobbled over to his old friend.
His new wooden leg didn't exactly fit as well as it had appeared to while they had fought off the Darkness.
His trademark stride was off now.
It was more of a limp.
And instead of his old grin, his face now bore a concerned frown and his eyes held sorrow instead of the old joy.
The Master of Time was young in body, but no longer so young in spirit.
He moved and felt like the Earth depiction of Father Time, an old frail man with an hourglass.
But he was still but a young man at seventeen scant years.
"How is she, Jasae?"

jasae closed the door quietly smiling
"im sure she will be up and about in a couple days now"

Aren's room had be shifted according to Illusion's imperious demands, the heavy bed stood so that the rays of the new day could reach her, the drapes of the bed drawn back, leaving the coverlet and pale face of the Savior of Dreams exposed. She no longer tossed in fits of delerium, but she had yet to awaken. Her spirit was still tattered from her part in the battle, so much so that Nightmare had reached out towards Shadel in an effort to bring Robin to Myria. It hadn't worked, as far as they knew, but Aren had calmed after the contact.

"That's good. I'd never be able to live with myself if she didn't pull through."
He grinned, but the edges of his smile seemed uncertain.
"How long'll it be until she finds the bell and starts asking for stuff?"

It would be another day before Aren stirred, not fitfully restless in her sleep, but half-waking, half-dreaming, half-fearing it was all a lie. The sunlight was warm upon her face, a thing that made her wonder if Myria was nothing but a dream, a nightmare... something that wasn't real. Perhaps a land created by herself in coma?
Shortly... She would awake...
Soon, she would know, but how much would she remember? How much had she forgotten..
And how much would she forgive? Of herself, and of others.
Knight had not returned, indeed Nightmare had dug the shadow a grave beneath the Mother Oak and former Queen.

~~~
Two years came and went in their inexplicable manner. Many questions were asked and answered. Many projects were started and finished. But while many things changed, more stayed the same.
Kikuka was still the princess of Myria.
Jekk was still hopelessly in love with her.
Jasae was still incurably silly.
Aren was still in pain.
And so begins this new tale...
~~~

Actually, this new tale begins with the tapping of a quill.
It was a high quality quill; a brilliant orange-red tailfeather from a pheonix. It tapped atop high quality parchment as well. It could be argued by some that the hand that tapped it was not such high quality, though. The hand belonged to the retired savior of Time, Jekk Enjens.

The Myrian captain of the guards laid his quill down on the large pile of invoices atop his sturdy wooden desk. He was done with paperwork for now. It had always been a policy of his that he didn't take a break from the paperwork he loathed so unless the pile in the out box was taller than the pile waiting in the in box or directly ordered to by the princess. He pushed his chair back and set his feet on the floor. A booted foot and a wooden foot always make an odd pair.

The captain of the guard, Jekk Enjens, set off to find a familiar face to spend his break with. Kikuka would be buried under work of her own at this point in the day. Although he knew she wouldn't even give a thought to refusing to spend time with him, Jekk knew that it was important to both the princess and her land that she work on those problems. Jekk always felt slightly awkward around Aren since the defeat of the Darkness. The loss of her shadow guide had been his fault, and he was the one who stabbed her. The only one who he truly knew in Myria remaining was Jasae. He'd be up to something fun for sure. But where to find him? Jekk grinned slightly and set off for the cookie closet.

"Hang it upside down." Aren drawled, pushing her hair out of her face. It had grown out since that day, but she still looked the same, if one could ignore the shadow in her eyes, or the way she avoided meeting people's gazes.
Truth be told, she avoided people, everyone, and had since then. It was Jekk's job to make sure Kiku ate, Jasae's to provide humor. Aren just... was. In the way one was after ordeals. She missed Knight's sarcasm and disrespect, but he had been one of the cassualties of what she had done. Having offered the muse the common sense he so often lacked, she turned to go back inside. She spent her time in various ways, sometimes working long nights over Kiku's papers so the girl could take a day off, or cooking meals she would not join them at, or hiding in the ancient oak that was the soul of Myria (as far as she was concerned).
Of everyone and everything, it seemed to her that the tree was most forgiving of Aren's choice. The solitude of the spot appealed to her, and she felt closer to Robin, who she still had not seen.
All in all, Aren was the ghost of the castle: not dead, but incredibly (if not impossibly) hard to describe as 'alive.'

If Jekk had wished to avoid Aren, he should have known the kitchen had become one of her retreats in the long days where she had no place. Too often had he found a meal waiting at his desk, the steam still rising from the plate, the drink still hot or icy cold, depending on the season. Too often had a plate of cookies (always of his favorite kind) appeared nearby while he was working, always accompanied by a drink of the proper type...
Too often had Aris come storming out of that large room, fuming as she returned to hell. For some reason, she had not permanently left Myria, choosing to visit whenever she felt the impulse. Only Aren knew that her former demon was finding it hard to adjust to the new order of Hell and the fact that, in so many millenia, she had been almost forgotten. Oddly enough, the two were almost friendly now, able to talk in cordial terms: they understood one another, now, as they never had before.
If indeed, Jekk had wished not to see the shade that was Aren, he should not have pushed open the heavy oak door of the kitchen, for she was sitting at the kitchen island, drawing shapes with her forefinger in the smear of flour across the polished wood, her head resting on her other hand, her eyes distant as they so often were, the scent of pie drifting in the air, lifted by the warmth from the oven where the delectable creation was baking.
Nightmare hung silent on the wall behind his mistress, Illusion just above, her quiver above the silvery bow. They were oddly quiet these days, hardly ever reaching out to cause trouble and keeping their caustic commentaries to themselves. Of all the changes, theirs was most unusual, for in all their long history, no one could remember a time when the two had fallen quiet in their ways.

It had been two years, and no matter the passage of Time, Aren had yet to lift her head in pride or laugh with a voice light with lack of care as she had in the days before. If Jekk had not wished to meet the reminder of her pain, he should have stayed away.

Princess Kikuka was hopelessly lost among the papers that never failed to continue to cover her desk, and herself. Her face was a frustrated frown and large dark circles had formed under her young eyes. Her head was rested on her hand, propped up by her elbow.

Raising up her head she sighed and shuffled the papers before her into a stack. She set them off to a side and looked around her dreary office. Kiku stood and scraped her chair back. Standing her floor length gown brushed the floor and rustled as she wandered over to her window and pulled open the curtains. It was sunny outside, but the mood in the castle was far from sunny.

Kiku slipped her hands into opposite sleeves, the wide openings mingling together at the front of her gown as she stood regally before the large window, peering outward. The sun reflected off her deep emerald gown, the color matching her eyes. The bodice fit well on her developing womanly shape and the A-line skirt, for all her lack of height, seemed to make her look regal despite her shortness.

The queen-to-be sighed, and her face took on an air of sadness. Nothing had been the same since the battle. It'd been so long ago, but it still affected all of them like the day it had happened. Kikuka stood looking out that window, thinking, for a very long time.
