How Can I tell if my pickups are active or passive, and whether or not the batteries are dead or if the pickups are just broken?

I did all that and it still didn't work. so i ended up calling support and they put me on hold for 30 min and than I had some guy talk to me for like 30 asking me if I did this or that. And in the end, I got no where.
