Here's a topic. A few days ago, a friend told me how his grand parents had an arrangement to clean a friends house for payment. He said while his grandparents were there, the male owner of the house was watching one of those shows on channel 16-17 where it's like an all day religious channel. He said that the male owner of the house was watching some type of ceremony similar to Christian faith healings. My friend said his grandfather saw this and started saying all these bad things about it, how it was bull crap and everything. M ind you- my friend's grandfather is cery Christian and is siting there bashing another denomination of his OWN religion. In the end- the male owner of the house kicked my friend's grandparents out and they were unpaid for their cleaning services. This brings me to the topic of Civil War within Religion.

There is a civil war in Christianity as tere is in Wicca. Traditional Wiccans bash non-traditionalist. I myself have been the subject of such bashings. As a fair warning, do not engage in a Wiccan topic in the ED or GD. It is very degrading I think. Yes, I admit I didn't know as much as I do now but I still knew a decent amount but let me tell you, I was torn apart in that discussion. What do the masses think??

I need some advice on something..

I know I havent posted much, mostly because when I get to a topic I want to comment on, someone always says what I want to say. Hehe... But I suppose now its my turn for help.
You guys probably get a lot of posts like this one. But...I personally dont know what to do.

You see.....I grew up without religion, and while it was good for the most point, I often felt empty, but when I got into Wicca.. it filled a void within me. The problem is Ive had this new job at Barnes and Noble Bookstore for over two months now. Religion, politics, never came up really when talking to people who worked there.. though there was some comments like "Dont wear satanists shirts to work" blah blah and one time one of the managers who hired me saw a book about wizards, "Wizardology" and said something along the lines of, "What a load of bull." Ive kept it mostly a secret at work because I dont want to be fired. These guys are professionals so... I dont know.

I have to turn in a copy of my school schedule so we can work around it, when I go back to school. And I was so excited to find a class in Anthropology called "Witchcraft, magic and Religion" I dont know if the teacher will teach it negatively or something, but I really want to take it. (hopefully, enough people will enroll and it wont get cancelled)
and I will have to show this to them....

Maybe I am thinking too much about this. The problem isnt if I get fired...if I do, so what.. I just wont be able to walk into those doors again...And I love bookstores..

I dont know if anybody has anything to say. But I just need to tell someone...maybe even here I can get the courage to survive this.. if the worst happens.

Depending on the state you live in you can not be fired for being pagan/wiccan the US Government recognizes wicca as a religion so if anything happens you can get them on religions discrimination. The US military allows the soldiers pagan/wiccan holidays off.. Just like jews get theirs and christens get theirs

I don't know what do.......
Last Imbolc I was going to go to a cerimony with my friend(my dad was driving), when we got there we came in the middle of the cerimony and my dad turned right around. He didn't give me a big lecture but my mom got all pissed off and started saying that all my friends at school are a bad influence. They won't listen to what I say and the blame my friend and they don't even want me to be around her...it pisses me off that my parents won't listen to what I have to say even about my school schedual for next year...my dad had a fit becasue I won't take Algebra II....ugh...

Lunai
Well-said, Rebel heart

I too think that there are a lot of people out there who decide they want to become Wiccan because they think they'll get similar results to ones they have read about or seen in the movies (i.e. lightening shooting from fingertips, levitating objects, etc.) A lot of those seeking to become Wiccan expect that they will be able to do things like this or think that Wicca is all about spell casting and magic and do not see the actual religious beliefs beyond the rituals and spell casting.

It's quite frustrating, isn't it? I think it's especially frustrating for those who are genuinely interested in following all aspects of the Wiccan spiritual path. Those who want to know and learn more about the religion, but sometimes are ignored and/or shot down by others because they aren't taken seriously by other Wiccans who have been learning/studying/practicing for longer than they have.

Isn't it sad that we've come to a point where we're skeptical of anyone interested in Wicca and we have to ask ourselves whether or not they are serious about the path? heart

Thank you, and equally well-said, Lunai! ^^

It is sad that we have to do the "hundred questions" thing before we believe another to be genuinely Wiccan, but I understand why so many do.

Many a fluff-bunny has entered our world, only to leave it upon realizing A) Wicca actually has religious beliefs, and a Rede that most Wiccans try to live up to (another words, some sort of rules, heaven forbid, that they should follow...never mind that it's not a horribly difficult or strict rule) rolleyes and B) Magic doesn't work the way it does in Hollywood.

Many of them even go as far as to assume that magic is BS because something didn't happen immediately, which also goes to show people's attention spans these days.

However, I don't like the elitists that still shove the "it takes a witch to make a witch" perspective down everyone's throats. These people contradict what Wicca is all about. Wicca isn't suppose to react the way people from strict orthodox religions do; it's suppose to be more friendly, and welcoming. After all, a Neophyte is still a Wiccan, just one whom is starting his or her journey. We were all there once, confused, mixing some stuff up, and even elders of the Craft are constantly learning new things.

Life is a classroom, from which we learn, yet never quite leave.

Once we do leave, if we haven't learned all we need to, we return. ^^

very well said... thanks to both of you for voicing what i've been trying to tell others in such a clear and concise way... i've been hesitant to join any local covens or pagan groups for the fact that most of them believe their way is "better" than the others... it's not a competition, it's my spirit i'm dealing with here...sheesh...

Hey guys, I just wanted to know if some of you could help me. I've been an officaial witch for the past two years, and a student for an additional year and a day, and throughout the entire process, my parents knew nothing. And they still don't. All my friends know, and completely accept it for the most part, but I hate keeping such a huge part of me secret from my family, and I'd like to tell them. But here's the thing.
My mum is a hardcore Lutheran, which is how I was raised, and my dad was raised morman and catholic, then became hardcore non-denominational. They both are extremely intolerant when it comes to religion and sexual prefrence, and they even bash other religions similiar to thiers. They even bash the differnent branches of Lutheranisim.(sp?) Every time I ease the conversation into the religion spectrum, all my mom will say is "Well, you seem so happy lately with being Lutheran, you have nothing to worry about!" and my dad just says "Well, you know 'god' is the only way, and you are not going to hell, so don't worry about those other heathens." They don't really listen, and they even make me distance myself from one of my friends who's morman. And since i don't make enough, i'm still unable to have a back up plan if they kick me out.
so, my question is, A) should I tell them? B) if so, when would be a good time? and C) how on earth can I break it to them. and also, do you have any other tips?
Thanks so much in advance for your help!
