-Spun glass...- He mused softly, just "audibly" enough for her to hear. -You remind me of... spun glass.- Such a delicately beatiful substance, almost ethereal in appearance, and yet so horribly ephemeral in actuality. So much so that one almost feared to breathe on it wrong because it seemed it might shatter.
Not that he thought Pearl was so delicate as that. She was stronger... perhaps than she had any inkling she might be. And yet that appealed to him all the more. She was so very like a walking heart... incredibly fragile and yet also not... depending on the situation. This world was so much more fascinating than the others in some ways...
-Do you like it better here when the others rest in slumber and all is still?- He smiled again, in a somewhat softer manner than before. -They make such chaos... when they gather. Don't they, little Pearl?-

Glass? Her head tilted ever so slightly out of curiosity. Was she transparent? She was definitely predictable when it came to most things, such as her reactions to others. She thought of herself as fragile, but never thought of herself ethereal in appearance. He had such an odd way of describing her. Darkside seemed rather interesting now, and less fearful than before.
Perhaps if she gained enough courage, she would understand the true strength hidden within. Though she doubted herself far too much to even begin. Maybe if someone was there to hold her hand through it, she could eventually transform into a Kitsu who enjoyed interaction with others.
She stared at him silently in thought. Usually she wasn't around others when they slept or vice versa. "I don't really know...I don't usually watch others when they sleep..."

Darkside gave of the impression of a musing rumble. -It is interesting to see people sleep... it's the one time when they let down all their walls and you can really see who they are. Though that isn't precisely what I meant... I meant more to ask if you like it better when the crowd is gone. I myself am not fond of crowds...- He shrugged and peered at her with his glowing eyes.
Shadow crawled down from Darkside's shoulder to trot over to the side and paw at a piece of string that was dangling from the table cloth. Then the little guardian sniffed at it, sneezed as a result, and after a moment of looking aghast darted back behind Darkside as if the "attack" of the string had frightened him.

She watched with interest at the glowing orbs. To her poor eyesight, they seemed as if they were floating in midair, unattached to anything. It was rather frightening, actually. But she remained at her seat, unwavering due to the fact that he showed no signs of hostility.
Her thoughts got distracted by the little noises the Shadow made as he pawed at the string before shuffling back to Darkside. She couldn't help but give up her attention towards the little Shadow instead. Her basic instincts told her to focus on the moving creature and nothing else, plus the fright he left on her from earlier still remained.
Finally gathering her thoughts again, she gazed back towards Darkside, even if she couldn't see much, "Oh...I don't enjoy crowds either. They make me nervous..."

Anyone who knew the nature of the Heartless in general would have found Darkside's behavior thus far on this world more than a little peculiar. Anyone who knew the nature of Heartless in general would find his utter fascination with this small pearlescent kitsusagi utterly mind boggling. Heartless simply weren't supposed to be interested in people as... well, people. And yet it appeared that Darkside was interested in just that.
He too watched Shadow move and return, though with far less concern. It amused him on some level though, to see his servant's own brand of fear and compare it to Pearl's; the main two differences being that Shadow was more energetic, and that Shadow had Darkside to hide behind if he got scared.
-What causes you to fear, little Pearl?- It would have been difficult for even a kitsu with good sight to make out anything of what he was thinking by his posture or expression. He seemed a wall of neutrality. Though if Pearl realized how unusual it was for him to really take a personal interest in anyone, it probably would have made the introvert bolt again.

It was true, Shadow had Darkside to hide behind while Pearl had no one. She often hid behind inanimate objects because no one else was around. Though she had no friends to begin with, so even if there were others around she would still hide behind those inanimate objects. She did want to hide behind others at times, but the fear of them doing anything to her made her think otherwise.
She wasn't sure herself. Perhaps it was because she disliked drawing attention to herself, but by acting so introverted it did draw some attention. Or maybe because she didn't see a world of colors like normal Kitsusagi did, but she wasn't exactly trapped in the world of darkness like Nitemares were, either. She was in between...alone.
Maybe it was this feeling that made her this way...this feeling of not quite belonging to any particular group. Most would feel glad being unique, but Pearl didn't feel the same. She wanted someone to hold her hand through most everything. For too long did she wander alone.
I don't know... She shrugged her shoulders. People are just...scary. And there are lots of them...And the world is very, very big...I guess it doesn't help if I can't see most of the world, either... Her head slowly sank lower as her gaze turned towards the ground. She was feeling very unsure of herself. No one had ever asked her these questions before, so she never sought the answers. This was the first time she ever came to terms with her own fears, but even now she was feeling very lost as always.

Darkside listened to Pearl "speak" in that soft, timid voice, and read a little more from the feelings that radiated from her heart than what she seemed able to voice. Alone? Ah...
Was he alone? He had Shadow, but Shadow was a servant, a minion, not really a friend. He had a Master, that Nobody being to which he was so inexorably tied because of the heart he held. But in that instance Darkside was simply a blade to be deployed. A companion... Hmm. He'd never given it much thought.
Then again he rarely spent time enough with a being to have a conversation like this or provoke such thoughts. But he was certainly an oddity among the Heartless... and by no means could he claim to be accepted among the normal populace of the worlds he'd been sent to. It might be something for later contemplation.
A compulsion, a feeling prompted from that heart he held that he rarely payed attention to, urged him to reach slowly toward her with a paw as she stared forlornly at her own feet. In spite of his supposed nature and his wicked talons the gesture was suprisingly gentle as he moved to place his paw over one of hers in an attempt to be comforting. He was slow about it, though, to allow her to pull away if she desired. She was far too fascinating to risk pushing her too far... he would back away if it was required.
His Master would probably be less than pleased with his behavior right now, but in all honesty, he didn't really care. He served his Master because he had to, and perhaps out of a twisted sort of mutual respect. But if Darkside found interests of his own, he saw no reason not to persue them. To find out why he was interested, if nothing else.
-Many of those with good eyesight are too busy looking to truly see, little Pearl. Perhaps it would do well for you to concentrate on what you do well rather than what you do poorly.-

Even though she was getting closer to him, it was that exact closeness she feared. Her paw swiftly moved out of the way as if by instinct. Closeness was something she feared for a long time now. Maybe it was the fear of losing or getting hurt, or maybe she just wasn't used to this feeling of getting close to someone.
She shook her head after his words. Good at something? Her? What was she good at besides hiding from others? But I have nothing...besides my timidness... Her soft voice echoed back with disappointment. Before she gave herself the chance she was already determined to give up. All she was good at was hiding from people, nothing more.

Darkside withdrew his paw when she moved her own so quickly and he watched her silently for a moment before shaking his head slowly. -How do you know, little Pearl? Have you ever tried to do anything? It doesn't need to be something spectacular, you know.-
Why?... Why did he desire so to make her feel better? It was fascinating to have such an urge, but also disturbing. He was a Heartless... he wasn't supposed to be capable of... caring? Is that what it was? Hrm...

She shook her head lightly in response. He spoke the truth...she never did try anything before in her life. All the while she was always too timid to try anything, she never realized she never actually truly tried something on her own.
But what should I try? I'm always too timid to try anything new... Her voice soft-spoken and filled with disappointment. She didn't know what she could try. Most of the time whatever she did try just ended up scaring her away. It was rather surprising she managed to stay in one place for so long, let alone conversing with Darkside here.
She couldn't get it into her head anything was possible. She didn't even realize she was trying now...to make friends at the very least. But to her it didn't seem like anything of the sort. Though, isn't that what making friends is all about? No one truly knew when friendships would spark...it always just...happens.

Darkside hmmed to himself for a moment at her responce, wondering. -You should... make a sandwich.- Did that seem odd? Something so mundane would be a good place to start. -Or perhaps if you wish you could make one of those little trays with the veggie and fruit pieces that I've seen people snack on?- It was something inbetween cooking and decorating... and not something anyone else really had to know about. Pearl could eat it, or leave it for someone to find... and if she enjoyed it, good, and if someone found it and they enjoyed it, then Pearl would know she'd done something that was appreciated. Or that's how it worked in his mind, at least.
And no... no one really did know when a friendship would spark. If Darkside had realized that was what was happening he probably would have laughed it off. If anyone knew such a timid creature was actually causing a Heartless a desire to befriend it!... The notion was simply too peculiar for him to think of it. Though he'd certainly be suprised later when he realized they had become friends, at some point in the future.

Her face peered up at Darkside in surprise. A sandwich...? Or a vegitable plate? She expected more out of him. But that wasn't to say his suggestions were bad ones. It was just rather...unexpected of him. She had thought he would suggest her start with something a little less simplistic, such as cooking a small meal.
A sandwich...? She brought a paw up to scratch her head in slight embarassment as she followed up her previous statement, How do you...make a sandwich? She asked softly and embarassingly.

-How?...- He smiled at that, amused on some level at her innocent ignorance. -Will you follow me? I can take you to the kitchen, and tell you how to do it.-
He stepped out beside the table, body forming quickly out of the shadows, the blue moonlight that defined his form an odd contrast to the bright red marking on his hips and the yellow-orange glow from the fire behind him. He kept his form small like her own, and through a great feat of willpower managed to make the writhing strands of shadow that formed his "hair" stilled to lessen the potentially imposing effect of his appearance. An imposing effect that might hopefully be lost on her partly because of her poor eyesight. The gold beads on the chain of his Hollow Heart pendant did flash slightly in the light from the fire, the only thing on him that seemed to be effected by "normal" lighting. Shadow peeked at Pearl timidly from between his taloned forepaws.
-It is not far, little Pearl. And none here aside from you and I currently wake, so there is no one else to run into.-

Her little eyes could at best make out the shape of his now solid form. There were some color contrasts here and there, but nothing too obvious. The colors she saw were not as clearly vivid as they actually were. In this case, it was probably a good thing. If she saw well, his form would no doubt have an intimidating effect on her. Especially those taloned forepaws of his, she would surely run in fear if she saw them vividly. Luckily, her eyes only saw blurry shapes that were indefiniate. Shapes were melted together into giant blurs.
Poking her head out from under the table quietly, her ears flickered here and there listening for any other noises. Aside from the Heartless' steps and the crackling sounds from the fireplace, it seemed he spoke the truth. It was merely a precaution, not a doubt in his words.
As the light reflected off her soft colored fur, they seemed to play with her light colors a bit. Where the light was strongest, the white shined with more of a brilliance than the other spots of white and pink. It almost gave the illusion that those spots on her body were made entirely of light. This was certainly quite the contast to the Heartless' dark colors, though his fur had its own unique brillance to it.
She followed behind him quickly and quietly. Her ears would always flicker about, afraid of any other persons' presence near them. And so far it seemed none stirred from their sleep or decided to come in for a late night interaction. Safe, so far.

He led Pearl quickly through the halls to the kitchen, making sure not to outdistance her but presuming that she would be more comfortable if they reached their destination quickly. Once there he led her over to the refridgerator. The bread was even right on the counter by the fridge. How fortunate.
-Now, little Pearl. On top of this counter, do you see? In the clear bag. There's the bread. Can you reach it or would you like me to get it down?-
