User ImageThe nights were usually quiet around the HQ. It was unusually quiet around the HQ, but that made Pearl feel more comfortable than ever. She enjoyed the quiet as that meant there were less strangers roaming about. None the less, as she softly pressed onward her ears remained on constant alert. The occasion rustle in the bushes made her jump in fear, but it was usually just the wind.

The gem kitsu slowly peered in through the front door of the HQ, noticing the quietness of the place. Usually there were others roaming about, either conversing with one another or just enjoying a temporary stay there. Of course, that meant she never stepped foot in the HQ prior to this since she always just turned around immediately and headed back home. This time it was different. With no one in sight or hearing range, she slowly entered through the front door.

Her ears flickered all about to ensure no one else was around before she made her way further inward. Of course, even though she couldn't hear anyone around, she still peered about ever so cautiously. When she safely assumed no one else was around, she sat quietly by the fireplace, staring into the crackling orange flames.

In that corner farthest from the fireplace there lay a patch of shadow, a spot that flickered with blue highlights as though it shone under the moon in spite of the warm orange light from the fire. Nor did the patch of shadow flicker the way the rest of the shadows in the room did; it would not dance to the haphazard dance of the flames.

For many long moments this shadow watched Pearl, and crept ever so slowly along the wall toward her, always seeming to fill in the existing shadows along its path as it drained out of the ones behind. Then a tiny creature padded slowly forward, nose and little crooked antenae twitching as it slipped closer to the gem kitsu. This was not one of the hearts its master sought; but he was curious all the same and so he sent his little Shadow out to test what sort of heart was held within this glittering shell.

For a while there Pearl laid quietly in front of the fireplace. Her eyes flickered as she began nodding off in front of the warm spot. She now understood why so many frequented here. It was a nice place, a warm place. Without the presence of others, it was almost like home itself, if not better. At least here she had little disturbance from the others.

As the light flickered on, it danced on her white and pinkish fur, allowing it to glow more radiantly than before. If she had any sort of self confidence she would certainly feel beautiful...but alas, if she knew she was radiating she would flee from the fireplace towards a darker place. Even if it meant sacrificing the warmth, she would do so just for the sake of being invisible.

Her ears flattened against her side as she slowly nodded off. She stretched out her paws slowly as she comfortably laid her head on top of them. The white and pink shard wings folded up neatly beside her pale body. Ah, this was such comfort.

Shadows had no scent, so nothing unusual passed through Pearl's senses. For a while, she just laid there breathing softly in and out without knowing the presence of the shadows. Perhaps it was for the best that she laid there blissfully ignorant of her surroundings or else the curious shadows could not approach her as they were doing now.

It was intriguing indeed, how the light that reflected off of this shimmering being drew him closer in much the way the light of a ripened heart did. But there was no desire to devour this one; beyond the fact she had nothing to do with the hearts he'd been sent here to find, there was perhaps a subconscious knowledge that devouring her would destroy this strange glittering light. And whether it was believed by anyone or not the Heartless did not seek to destroy the light; it was the selfish desire of those first dark hearts to possess the light that led to their birth. To posses it, to own it, to keep anyone from taking it away from them... that was they wanted. In the process they simply made everything else dark.

Sleeping... she was soft when she was sleeping. And perhaps less fragile. She seemed as glass when she was awake, the tension and fear in her heart bleating at him like some frightened animal. When she was asleep she was not aware of the fear and became more like silk. Curious... curious... He crept closer along the wall and urged his Shadow forward.

The guardian shaped shadow creature slunk closer, seeming almost fearful with its rapidly twitching nose and wildly flicking antenae. It sat in front of her and simply stared, not entirely sure what it was supposed to do now that it was here.

Even though she slept rather soundly, like most creatures she did not fall into deep sleep that easily. She was a light sleeper by nature, which added to her skittish nature. If it were not by nature, in the process between her birth and now she managed to train herself to become one, even if she was unaware of it. She was like a cat when she slept, her ears would follow what noises it heard and when noise stirred around her she could not help but open her eyes to see what it was. Though unlike a cat, her eyesight was not so well-made, in fact, she would only see very few colors at best. And even up close sometimes objects or creatures were blurry.

She often stirred in her sleep as she dreamed often. Of what? No one really knows. She couldn't even remember them clearly. More than likely, though, it was of becoming a stronger Kitsu--one that didn't run away so easily. As she stirred, her paws moved about in a swatting position. Her face twitched rapidly as if she was chasing something in her dreams wildly with excitement. ...Then her paw hit something and almost immediately her eyes opened in fright.

Shadow, while not stupid, was in fact utterly clueless. So as he watched the paw swat around it hadn't occured to him that he might be hit; nor did it occur to him not to remain in his "solid form" to keep from frightening her should she come in contact with him. Though the slight chill that came from passing through a Heartless might have woken her in just the same fashion.

All that said, when the paw hit him Shadow was caught utterly off guard and toppled over on his back, flailing his little legs with his eyes tightly shut as if to fend off... whatever it was. Though even with his antenae wiggling around wildly it took him several minutes of absolutely adorable flailing around to realize that Pearl had in fact withdrawn her paw almost as soon as it had knocked him over. He peeked his little glowing eyes open and peered at her from where he lay on his back, either still too startled or simply too unthinking to right himself yet.

Darkside watched with a detached sort of amusement as his subordinate squirmed about on the floor, turning his gaze back to the shimmering Pearl once Shadow had stilled. He was content for the moment to watch... speaking would come, but not just yet.

Most normal Kitsus would probably apologize for knocking the little guy over, but Pearl was far from normal. Instead of apologizing for knocking the poor, cute thing over, she gathered herself up as fast as possible and scrambled rather clumsily towards the nearest "safe" spot.

On her way under the table, she almost hit her head on the chair leg. She manged to stop herself just in time before the two contacted one another, but it was a close call. Beneath the table, she curled herself up as tightly as possible, trying not to reveal herself to the shadowy creature outside. Putting the fact the shadow probably saw her running into there aside, her eyes widened as her ears flickered madly. The darkness didn't help her poor eyesight at all, but at the least it tried to adjust to the dark.

The silk metamorphed into glass once more and Darkside summoned Shadow back to him. He drew closer to the table, still not actually forming himself out of the pooling shadows. He stopped just short of actually moving any part of himself under the table and spoke softly to Pearl.

-Is my servant all that fearsome? And here I feared he was too cute for his own good...-

It probably didn't help Pearl's nerves that his voice manifested directly in the mind. He couldn't really help that fact though; he didn't actually have vocal chords, after all. He was fortunate he was able to "speak" at all, really. Most Heartless were incapable of such, aside from the Seeker of Darkness.

She couldn't see shadows overlaying each other, her eyesight wasn't good enough for that. But of course, once it spoke she froze immediately on the spot as if someone grabbed her and held her still. It didn't connect to her he spoke to her directly through her mind. She thought it was rather...normal since that's how she "spoke", too.

The pinkish white female thought if she relaxed a little bit, the situation would soon resolve itself. She could only shake her head to indicate it wasn't really the little shadow's fault, it was merely her skittish personality. Adding onto it was the fact that she was asleep at the time and happened to swat at something...strange. Even though she could also "speak" directly into his mind, she chose not to once again. Just because he did it didn't mean he enjoyed it returned to him. She was just...strange like in that sense, or maybe just overly polite?

-You may speak, little one. If you choose.-

He couldn't read thoughts, no, but he could sense the unease on her heart and to a point discern some of the reasons for it. He formed his head into something solid, curious to try out this kitsu-body he seemed to have acquired. Fortunately he was able to manipulate his size into something smaller than it actually was; a fortunate gift of shadows. He peered at her with his glowing eyes from beneath the table cloth, head cocked to an angle that indicated curiosity.

-Do we frighten you, little one? My servant and I...- He smiled, just barely, a quirk of movement at the edges of his maw. -In most cases... that would be a good thing for you. But you... you at least need not fear.-

She was unsure of herself now. Should she speak? It wasn't as if she was waiting for his permission to speak. Or maybe she was? She didn't know too well entirely herself. Perhaps it was just because she felt uncomfortable speaking, or maybe it was because she felt uncomfortable bonding with another creature in any way. Whichever the case it was, she shook her head lightly, still a bit hesitant in conversing with this shadow.

His glowing eyes were peculiar. They were like the light from the soft moon she often saw, only this light was much brighter. The color of the eyes were strangely familiar that it didn't frighten her immediately. She still feared the glowing eyes, but not so much as the dull reflection the other Kitsuses eyes where the glow seemed unnatural [to her at least].

Despite his rather peaceful voice she still took a few steps backward. She enjoyed distance between herself and others. A soft yet hesitant smile appeared on her face. She was unsure of what to make of him, but thus far he hasn't tried to harm her in any way.

Darkside simply watched for a moment, corners of his maw twitching as if he might smile but it didn't quite happen. Did this shimmering creature have a glow of her own? Or was it simply that even the barest shaft of light caught on her fur? There was no sound but there was a definite impression that he was chuckling to himself.

Shadow poked his nose out from under Darkside's ear and peered at Pearl, wiggling his nose curiously.

Those soft eyes of hers couldn't make out enough detail to see the small grin on Darkside's face. But if she saw it, she would certainly wonder as to why he smiled. She would probably think he had some evil plans to harm her, though. Good thing she couldn't see too well in this case.

Even though she couldn't see, she could at the very least hear the sudden noise from the small Shadow. The sudden noise spooked her enough to make her jump back. When she did, her head bumped onto the top of the table, creating quite the loud "thud" noise.

When she realized it was just the little Shadow from before who seemed rather harmless, her pale face flushed with a slight hint of pink. The skittish female took in deep breaths in attempts to calm herself. They're not here to harm you... she tried to convince herself.

-Do you have a name, little one?- These beings with hearts usually did. Actually, so did he; very few Heartless had a name of their own. His type of Heartless was also referred to as the Darkside; the difference, he supposed, was that he actually recognized that he was being referred to. Most Heartless didn't have the sort of self-awareness he did. -You may call me Darkside, if you wish.-

She was still unsure of her voice. This wasn't the first time she would use it, but she never quite felt comfortable using it. It wasn't only because she felt it was an intrusion into others' minds, but because she lacked the confidence to believe in her voice. That was probably the reason, she deemed a long time ago.

Pearl... she said ever so softly within his mind. Her voice was soft and held a very silk-like texture to it. It was very much like a pearl, soft and silky, yet it held a certain delicacy to it, as if it would be overpowered at any given moment. Every part of her was just another reflection of her personality.
