I purchased Pom Poko along with several other Miyasaki DVDs. I enjoyed it and found many entertaining animations in it. Not only were the raccoons good at transformation, but, I realized, from the very beginning of the film, they changed shape from a very primitive two dimentional state to an animal likeness as well. I am an Ecologist and the subject of urban development is one dear to the heart of an active ecologist. I had lunch on Sunday with a group of people one of whom was in Japan in the time of the urban development of Tokyo and now looks forward to seeing the movie.

I saw Pom Poko for the first time last night on AMC. I thought it was good but no ware near as good as Chibli's other movies. I also think that this movie did the best job of showing how the enviorment is being destroyed and how the animals are suffering.

I think Ghibli does a good job of showing sort of a "cycle" (maybe unintentionaly, I don't know)

Whisper of the Heart takes place in Tama New Town, the development being built in Pom Poko. I like that it creates a sort of happy ending anyway with the other film.

This is a good movie. The scenes were the were the older raccoons would teaching the younger raccoons to transforms are funny. :3

Yea, it was a kind of draggy. Thought when I watched it on AMC I didn't really care, just being about to finally see it was all I could think about. :3

Talk about heartbreaking... I loved those Raccoons!

Sigh.. A very good story.

And the amazing abilities the raccoons had were fantastic!

Sad how nature is taken over by humanity. A theme widely used by the g. studio.

That movie was slightly...wierd. My favorite part was at the very beginning where it was like, "What are you eating? Oh, pickled plum? Can I have a bite?" or something like that.

Was it...

'Mister raccoon, Mister raccoon,
Can't you play with me somehow?
"No I can't I am eating dinner now."
What's for dinner I want some-
"I am eating pickled plums."
Can I have a little grub? (( It might be plum instead of grub I dunno))
"Don't be such a greedy bum.
Get your own!"'

I loved this part too as well as the song in the end where the racoons are dancing in the golf course. Also I literally cried when they "restored" Tama Hills even though it was only for a while.

The balls thing was kind of odd but I guess thats just the cultural barrier.

When I went to Japan in an exchange program at my high school, my host family brought me to rent some videos. My host sister and I picked some out and she knew I liked Studio Ghibli(and tanukis whee ) so we rented it. IT WAS SO HILARIOUS!!!!!!! rofl

The way they made their balls the size of a car and squished people! PRICELESS!!! xd

I loved it so much! It earned first on my fav. Ghibli films^-^

Spastic_Sushi
It's too drawn out for me..it get's rather boring about half way through..but the point of it is good. It's just...the tanuki's aren't exactly afraid to let it "hang out..." that kind of botherd me throughout the movie o_O

The reason they showed their balls, was because in japan, they place tanuki statues in front of their houses and shops. And the bigger the balls, the more stronger the Tanuki is said to be and scarier it is to evil spirits and bad luck. And I think there is a myth that the tanuki statues are actually living tanukis in disguise, which is why some people leave offerings in front of their statues, so that the tanukis won't go hungry and leave.
That 'particular' was quite wierd for me, too, at first, but the message of the movie is important, I think, especially in a modern society with a long and rich history like the Japanese one. the movie shows romantically the will to remain in the 'good, old' time, but the real problem is that's not possible, because of evolution; however, the society should understand that the balance between humans and nature is a huge issue that has to be considered with much more consideration.

I think so, I don't see anything 'obscene' in this movie, after all..it's funny and it teaches something important

Hehehe, I first saw PomPoko...just scenes of it because I was watching AMV Hell 3 xDDD

'Big balls' xDDD

AMV Hell 3.....is a work of art! lol! I actually first heard that song in another fan-vid called Evangelion Re-Death....you should try finding that one (good luck though...it took me forever to find it).

But this movie is most definetelly on my faves list! It's so diverse! I mean, come on! They're little racoons fighting for their lives! Most "environmentalist" movies show only the victimization of the animals. This movie actually shows the animals on OFFENCE! It's quite awsome seeing furry woodland creatures suit up for war (despite the fact they're naturally fat and lazy... whee I loved that part! I makes them almost human!).

I've shown the girls i babysit almost every Ghibli film...besides this one....Because I don't think their parents would appreciate the exposure of the girls to balls, even if it's on little furry animals....lol! At least on Mononoke (one of their absolute favorites) I know where to fast forward (you know, heads and arms flying off willy nilly xd ). But there is no place in this movie to avoid the ever present balls.... rofl

I just can't put my finger on it, but this movie holds a nice place in my heart! heart

I love this movie! Even if it's long, I can't turn it off once it's on. It has such a beautiful meaning, the end always makes me cry! crying

It's awesome! rofl

I found it a little slow, but the story is interesting. I am not fond of anthropromofized (spelling) animals. The ecological impact story was really good.

I own this but I still haven't made it more than ten minutes in. The bouncing balls distracted me the first time I tried to watch it, and then I got a bunch of other DVDs and have been watching them first. Once I finish with Gummi Bears, Duck Tales, and Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers, I'm giving it another go.
