Heisei Tanuki Gassen Pompoko ( Pom Poko ) is a tale of the clash between modern civilization and the natural world. The Raccoons of the Tama Hills are being forced from their homes by the rapid development of houses and shopping malls. As it becomes harder to find food and shelter, they decide to band together and fight back. The Raccoons practice and perfect the ancient art of transformation until they are even able to appear as humans. In often hilarious ways, the Raccoons use their powers to try to scare off the advancement of civilization. But will it be enough? Or will the Raccoons learn how to live in balance with the modern world? Celebrate the magic of the forest and the beauty of the creatures who live among us in Pom Poko.

It's too drawn out for me..it get's rather boring about half way through..but the point of it is good. It's just...the tanuki's aren't exactly afraid to let it "hang out..." that kind of botherd me throughout the movie o_O

That movie was slightly...wierd. My favorite part was at the very beginning where it was like, "What are you eating? Oh, pickled plum? Can I have a bite?" or something like that.

When I went to Japan in an exchange program at my high school, my host family brought me to rent some videos. My host sister and I picked some out and she knew I liked Studio Ghibli(and tanukis whee ) so we rented it. IT WAS SO HILARIOUS!!!!!!! rofl The way they made their balls the size of a car and squished people! PRICELESS!!! xd I loved it so much! It earned first on my fav. Ghibli films^-^ Spastic_Sushi It's too drawn out for me..it get's rather boring about half way through..but the point of it is good. It's just...the tanuki's aren't exactly afraid to let it "hang out..." that kind of botherd me throughout the movie o_O The reason they showed their balls, was because in japan, they place tanuki statues in front of their houses and shops. And the bigger the balls, the more stronger the Tanuki is said to be and scarier it is to evil spirits and bad luck. And I think there is a myth that the tanuki statues are actually living tanukis in disguise, which is why some people leave offerings in front of their statues, so that the tanukis won't go hungry and leave.

I loved this movie and I thought it was hillarious as well the racoon "pouch" caught me completely by suprise and it took me a minute to connect in my mind what they were but once I did I just cracked me up rofl I didn't find it disturbing mostly because I open minded and I thought that i remeber seeing some of tanukis statue things before I didn't care so much for the life goes on ending though

Ooooh, the one where they can make illusions with their genitals and junk? Hah. Not my favourite Ghibli movie but high on the Cute and fairly Odd category. I found it difficult to understand at first; not being aware of the old Japanese folklore that Tanuki's (or racoons to me) have HUGE testicles and are the masters of illusion, but I still enjoyed it quite a lot.

I first watched Pom Poko on a disc my brother brought back from Iraq about 8 months before it was released in the states. Very good movie for anyone who likes cute, and( if you are not familiar with Japanese folk-lore?) slightly odd movies. The disc also came with Whispers of the Heart on it. I don't know If this ones even been released over here, Also a VERY good move.
