In my house we don't use items. IMO playing with no items shows a persons true skill while using items, someone can luck out and win. Are items bad? Nope. Me and my friends sometimes do items matches. I.E Pokeball match, beam sword, etc. They add fun to the game but without them it's more intense.

Items are fun to use (I mean how else am I supposed to Sandbag people without a Bat?) They make my friends more of a challenge because they dont own Melee razz . But if you keep losing in matches because of items its because you simply cant avoid them... And how else do you do all those crazy fun glitches like the Black Hole without a Superscope?

devising item combos for matches always gets us a couple of laughs and a break from stale stock matches
my personal favorite:
-hyrule temple
-endless stock
-sudden death melee
-heart containers on very high o_o
-fast characters recommended
it's makes an interesting match, trust me.

I like doing bomb only matches. Like Land Mines and Bomb-ombs with partyballs as well. 8D. Explosions are fuuuuun. 83

Items are fun, but in a tournament scene I can understand why they're taken out. I usually find myself running for the Beam Sword or Home Run Bat, or if I'm just being silly, the Fan.
One of my favorite items-match setups goes like this-
-Pokemon Stadium
-Pokeballs on very high
-All characters must be Pokemon

Oh and if some crazy Pro who always uses Advanced Techs says that Items are for noobs and you shouldn't use them. And "If you didn't have those Items you never would have won" And then you say "Yeah but your nothing without your little "Advanced Techniques talk2hand "

Mr.Saturn is the Perfect Baseball! Hes also just fun to throw at people : D Besides if he hits you it doesn't do much damage. You can't play Baseball with a Bob Omb because it will explode and most likely kill you. Pokeballs, a pokemon comes out and attacks you. No fun D:

Red shell = Omega gayness.
Starman = Chase fest.

I dislike the bomb-omb merely for the double edged sword fact. It can be your best friend or it can be your worse enemy...more of the later in my case. I can't recall how many times I've been close to decimating an opponent then suddenly 3 bomb-ombs would appear from a crate or party ball and nail me as I was knocked back by an attack. Which sadly robbed me of my All-Star Hard victory for the mew trophy on Game & Watch.
