Ok most people listening to music are killing time... or just using it as entertainment... which again means they are killing time...
Things that usually kill time become addictive... like music, games, watching tv programmes, going on internet etc etc etc... and the more addictive you become the less likely you will remember Allah, all you will want to do is play play play and play...
So my conclusion is if your listening to music to kill time or just for entertainment, then it's haram... but if it's for education then it's ok 3nodding
To Zaaki... swearing is haram in all cases... whether if it's a song or not a song...
Hope that helped... Love u all & hi 3nodding

Lily Da Bangali Rani Things that usually kill time become addictive... like music, games, watching tv programmes, going on internet etc etc etc... and the more addictive you become the less likely you will remember Allah, all you will want to do is play play play and play... ...using the slippery slope fallacy as Ratri so kindly mentioned in the homosexuality thread.... *cough* ahem. Just because you do something that kills time doesn't mean that you're going to become addictive to it. So what if I listen to music? I usually am multitasking anyways....like doing homework, cleaning the yard, housework, going to the construction site to do extra labor for money. Music can help you focus as well, like Mozart's music. it doesn't mean that when I listen to it I slip into a state of stupor and forget everyhting else in the world. if you're implying music is like that, then you must be checking out some sort of drugs, because music doesn't do that sort of thing at all.
Yes, I am a flaming Muslim...but Allah loves me!

Lily Da Bangali Rani My short reply to your long comment " Music is drugs" - Famous phrase - That is a personal opinion. And not all drugs are bad. You need to take painkillers to cope with injury or pain after surgery. Or antibiotics to deal with a certain kind of infection.
My reply to your quote:
Music is the poetry of the air. ~Richter
There is nothing in the world so much like prayer as music is. ~William P. Merrill
Music's the medicine of the mind. ~John A. Logan
Music is well said to be the speech of angels. ~Thomas Carlyle, Essays, "The Opera"
Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. ~Berthold Auerbach
Regardless of what you say and some perspective of Islam says, I think that music can be important in life and add a little more to it.
