eamane ancalime Does anyone else have this problem? I've started to abhor homework because it's taking away my practice time. And I've started slacking off a little on homework. It's like I'll see my violin sitting out begging to be played, and I'll look across the room and see a bookbag full of homework. And violin is much more fun. And I also have rehearsals for different groups almost every night, so that also limits my time. And I just can't get motivated to do homework. Ever. So does anybody have any tips for practice and homework? most people say all you really need is a half an hour of practice every night, how much time do you usually spend?

I've never heard anyone say that. My ideal amount of practice time for right now would be an hour a night on my audition excerpts for all state, and I'm starting a new solo this week so I'd want to start out spending a half an hour a night on that, and gradually increase. And then there's the orchestras I'm in. And I've been neglecting practicing for those. stressed But I like practicing, so I want to spend more than half an hour. It's just finding time.

eamane ancalime Kalile Alako Oh, I'm sorry; the comment about the college was probably confusing. I'm a junior in high school, but we have practice rooms at my school. We also have a separate building across the street from the main campus for the music facility, and a new $22 million theater. (Sorry... couldn't resist bragging... redface ) The college thing was irrelevant; I was just remembering how nice UNLV's practice rooms were, and they're not even a good music school! Ours are crappy compared to theirs, and we only have like five. But they're still useful, if your school has any. Haha, yeah that confused me. I've never heard of a high school having practice rooms. Your high school sounds pretty nice. Yeah... we're spoiled. And I brag about my school too much in all my guilds... I just love it so much. sweatdrop Askew Heart eamane ancalime Does anyone else have this problem? I've started to abhor homework because it's taking away my practice time. I've never heard that either... I've been told that you need at the absolute minimum an hour a night. I try and get like three hours. That's the plan, anyway, not that I have the energy; my back typically starts hurting after like a half hour still, so I have to break it up in chunks. A half hour would be if you only had orchestra school music or something like that.

if you're in middle school you could do your homework on the bus. I have to do a gig and I did a school wide concert. that was nerve wrecking, since I'm not used to performing in front of more then 700 people. they loved it and they said it was the best performance our school's orchestra had done in 14 years!!! I also had a concert on tuesday with the choir that we did for our family and out of school friends. I also have to perform at first night on the first day of january as well as the district festival in march. we're middle school aged, but high school level and we have one violinist who's national level!!! so I have about 20 different christmas carols and classical pieces. I swear the song Bourree from by G.F Handel is evil!! I also have some fiddle pieces that I'm learning!!

wow, I so know what you mean. College saps out like all of my spare time. O_o I shouldn't be online right now. But yes, looking at my violin hanging on my wall irks me, begs me, to play. I use the rewards system mentioned before. Or I take "union breaks". since it's not good to study for more than an hour and a half at a time, I study for that long, and then take about half an hour of violin. It gives me something to work towards.

You have a different problem than me by a lot.
Want my suggestion? Do your homework, Then practice all you want guilt-free.
Just hide your violin in a corner until your homework's done, or have someone else hide it.
For me I still have a hard time getting ready to practice. lol I don't move as fast at home so the stuff we play at orchestra for some reason I can't play at home. I don't get it. :B

And also--when you're homework is like an all-day thing, you need breaks anyways. It actually helps me get done faster. Oh, just saying, it works for me. For your speed problem--do you have a metronome? That usually works. Check the speed at orchestra or wherever, and then set the metronome to that at home. Or start slow, and increase it by 1 or 5 bpm at a time till you reach the target bpm. Just an idea. Hope it helps.

Yeah. THe reward system works pretty well. But also try and take more advantage of doing homework during school. Like if a teacher takes a while to get to the class, do some homework. And during classes with stuff you already know.

I have this problem all the time. I'm in college too, so homework does, sadly, have to come first. So, what I like to do is find an empty classroom and practice until my next class starts. I've started slacking off in school because violin is more important to me...but one must remember that violin and school go hand in hand.

Try balancing piano, violin, homework, chinese class, and guitar x.x <- that's me, dead. Yeah I know what you mean, it's hard to try to do all of them.

I'm in an international program so my homework and projects are really on top of my priority list since I get kicked out if I don't do them. So I have really almost no time to practice violin. Plus, sometimes I just leave it at school because my backpack is already heavy.
So most of the time I got to cut 30 minutes off my dinner time to go practice confused

Actually, I have discovered what a wonder it is to be a Junior with AP classes and such; now that the test and all of our spring concerts and things are over, I can use the practice rooms for 8th period, an hour and a half every other day, sometimes during 1st and 2nd period, and often during 3rd period. It is extremely nice, because when I use one 3rd period I often end up staying through lunch and getting 2 hours done at school!
