Naeve whirled to the source of the sound. Her eyes alighted on the owl, and they narrowed. "So you were sent by Hera! Is that you, Athena?" Naeve said, squinting at the faint outline in the darkness. "I will never understand why you like the owl so much, sister. It is such a dreary form... and eating mice all the time? Disgusting. I don't see how you can stand it." Naeve scrunched up her face, making it look more and more like a prune. She uncrinkled her face, relaxing it.
"Well, if Hera sent you, then she must have something "important" to tell me? Is it a forewarning? 'Oh, do not do this, do not do that, oh hopeless child of mine.' Blahbity blah blah." Naeve waved her hand uselessly at the owl, releasing the little girl to place the other hand in a fist on her hip. "Hera always thinks she's right. She needs to learn that I have grown up a little bit." The crone shook her wrinkly, saggy arm up at the sky, and lighting boomed perilously. "Oh, phooey to you too." Naeve said in the general direction of upwards.

Ress had no idea what to think of the crone. But one thing seemed obvious: she was crazy. And as soon as she let go of Ress' wrist, the girl began to back away slowly, silent with years of practice. No matter that the woman had promised food; Ress' fear went beyond her hunger.

"I... My name's not Athena," said Misty. "I'm searching. Do you know what I'm searching for?"

"Not Athena, eh?" She crowed at the owl. What in the world was this crazy owl talking about. "Well then, if you aren't Athena, who are you?"
She sighed quietly. She could hear the gentle rustle of clothes behind her, creeping away somewhat silently. She turned again to see the little girl backing away quietly. She pretended not to notice.
"Maybe I do know what you're searching for. Are you hungry, owl?" Naeve giggled harshly, and it turned into a cough. Naeve wiped her mouth on her sleeve, and continued. "I know of a place where they throw out meat. A place where they leave food in the street after they are full. The sky is dark, and the people do not speak to you, but there is plentiful bounds of food. Mouth-watering cabbage, and delicious crispy carrots. Beef stew, and hardy potatoes. Rich, thick gravy, lots of food." Naeve said.
"But if you're not hungry, I'll just forget about taking you there." She said, looking at the girl out of the corner of her eye.

Ress froze. Food. Her stomach growled in hungry, betraying how long it had been since she last ate. Indecision tore her in half, and she stopped backing away, not noticing the crone had noticed her movement. She stayed silent, not knowing what to look of the deranged woman talking to an owl who was actually talking back.
"Whose Athena?" she asked, dry throat making her high, lilting voice crack.

"I... I don't think I'm searching for food. And I just ate a mouse... I think my name's Misty, but I haven't used it in so long that I just don't... know. I... just don't... know anymore." Misty stopped talking. It was hard on her small bird's brain to speak in human for more than a sentence.

A dark smile crossed Naeve's face. "Why, Athena is my aunt. My mother is Hera, and Athena is her sister. The goddess of wisdom. You know of the gods and goddesses above? They watch over us." She turned back to the owl from the small girl.
"Misty, is it? Well then, child, you don't seem to be much older than I. I think I know what you're searching for. Were you a human, Misty?" Naeve asked the owl, a sweet smile crossing her face. It could be that the owl was changed by a goddess or angry god. She wondered what the simple child could have done to cause such anger.

"I... No! Of course not! Maybe... I don't really know." Misty was getting more confused by the minute. She couldn't decide things, not with a flighty bird brain and for the first time in her owl life she sincerely desired to be human. "I think so. At least, I don't think I was always an owl."

Bran sat down on a bench near a huge tree. She watched an old lady shuffle by and mother push little stroller around. Among the people she saw walking by, she noticed a young man. She couldn't help but stare even though she knew she was being rude. He just seemed so out of place to her, like he belonged in a high-end club, not the park.

"My dear, I can help you become human." Naeve said, chuckling darkly. "I know of a world, of spells and of goddess's, and of a powerful god. Have you heard of Hades, my child?" She crept closer to the owl, reaching out a hand to stroke its feathers. "Be calm, little one. Organize your thoughts."

Ress stood transfixed at the woman's conversation with the owl. She seemed to have forgotten the girl, and Ress shifted her weight from side to side, wondering whether to try her luck in the city on her own or see if the crone was actually worth her while.

"Hades, what's that? And who says I want to be human? But maybe I... maybe I... Hmph," Misty couldn't get her thoughts out fast enough. To be searching for years and then to find what she was searching for in a matter of minutes was too hard on her tiny owl brain. She felt her feathers grow heavy and the world around her began to get darker and darker. Suddenly everything turned black and she lost all sense of anything.
Prestin felt relaxed. The park always made him forget his life. The sun shone down on everything, filling the world with a singular kind of beauty. Prestin noticed a girl staring at her. "Um, excuse me, but is there something you want?" he asked her.

((It's Creole Lady Rose. I switched accounts... sorry again))
Naeve caught the small bird as it fell, cradling it in her arms. She turned, still stroking the soft feathers of the owl, back to the girl. "Girl," Naeve said, in a gentler tone, "What is your name?" She moved to sit on a stump nearby, resting her old bones.

Ress opened her mouth slightly, then closed it again. No one ever asked her what her name was, just threw something at her and yelled at her to get out of their trash and they wouldn't give any food to her, no matter how hungry she was.
"I-I'm Ressisance, Ress for short," she stuttered. "Wh-who are you?"

"Ressisance, you say?" Naeve cackled. She shifted, making herself more comfortable on the upended stump, holding the little owl in her arms gently. "Well, my little Ressisance, where are you going? What is it that you are looking for?" She stroked the owl, watching the young girl curiously.
