...[Hatching reflections, Kyllae]
The last few days had not found O`asis as well as he would have liked. There was a clinging aura of depression following the Hatching. Even as most the dragons in the Weyr came to forget the dead blue and dud egg, the populace of the Weyr found it less easy to forget - and, regrettably, less easy to forgive. And every time a nasty comment was dropped in his company, or a veiled threat laid within earshot, he had to ask again: Why did it have to have been Kyllae?
The girl had always gone a bit against the grain. That was half the reason he'd befriended her so quickly, in fact! But to have such a moment of dimglowedness, and with such consequences... and he knew he couldn't judge her for it, but that didn't stop anyone else. And it was all he could do to bite his tongue, let the insults pass, and worry over them at his own leisure.
Uktenath wasn't having any of his self-pity, however. Because His was not meant for such somber states, didn't he realize? Uktenath knew! When things went bad, he and His did not linger on the past. They built for the future. That was what would make them great, the Weyrling knew. That ability to adapt, to grow, to seize control of the reins and turn a bad situation into an opportunity for greatness - that was why O'asis was His!
And, slowly but surely, O'asis was brought to believe it. It didn't cure his frustration, but it sure helped to redirect it. And without coaxing from Uktenath, he came to realize, he could use this. Somehow, he could make this work, not just for him, but for the Weyr. For the cause.
