".....I was watching a family," he answered honestly, not looking at her. He was a bit embarrassed he as caught at the waterfall doing that, but he knew it'd happen one day. Just didn't think it would have been so soon. Sighing, Backus dropped his head and lowered his ears again, tail drooping.
Family was interesting to him. He couldn't remember his, but he had a strong urge to figure out what it was all about, what made them tick. "I want to know what it's like to have a family... So I watch the puppies from this one family, to make sure they don't get hurt..."

Aeryn smiled in spite of herself, she nudged the other wolf playfully and grinned.
“But getting hurt is part of growing up, and there is no shame in being curious in things you do not understand.” For some odd reason she understood his feeling but decided it was best to drop the subject and make her counterpart smile again.
She bumped her hip against his once more and darted in front of him, smiling. Sometimes playing calmed her, even if it was by herself, so this should help the boy too… right? Aeryn lowered her torso to her forepaws and wagged her tail happily, prepared to pounce on the other unless he moved.

He knew being hurt was a part of growing up, but he wanted these pups to grow up happily. To be the happiest they could be. Soon, though, he'd have nothing to watch. "They're moving soon. Set to travel so the mother of the pups can be happy and teach the father a few things," he said with a faint smile. Yes, he'd been that close. To overhear a few conversations and figure out personalities.
Backus' eyes blinked a bit as she started to play with him, getting him midly confused. What was she really trying to do? Backus didn't know how to play, that he remembered. Still, the aspect of it was appealing. He'd seen the two brothers wrestle with each other. Is that what she wanted to do?
He leaned down, stretched out his large, muscular frame and mimicked the female with an unsure look. "What are we doing...?" He asked in a low, rumbling voice.
