well i would like to agree with you because you do have a good point. but i beleive that people need to get things correct, instead of calling things what they arent. i do it for educational purposes, but if they dont listen, i will usually leave it alone. those closed minded types are never interested in learning anything, and they never want to be wrong.

In a thread made for the mere purpose of genre debate, I think that's completely fine (people who don't know their genres well shouldn't go there anyways unless the plan to learn). But when people bring up genre classification in places where its just not called for... it comes out as pretty pretentious and quite obnoxious.
well it is i admit. but still, i dont like the fact that... if your going to act or be an eletist a*****e... at least know what the hell your doing it over. kinda like college students who talk about why they are protesting on cnn.. cnn always finds the best college kids for me to laugh at. (thank you for helping spread the word on that carlos mencia)

haha, nice. but back on subject, i seriously dont like the morons though who say they know everything about the music they listen to, and then wind up having everything wrong when someone who knows what they are talking about comes along. such as when i tell kids at skool that simple plan isnt punk, they always say something along the lines of "dumbass! i know what i listen to, and simple plan is sooo punk" and bull like that.

That's like trying to explain to people what Emo is. I let my friend listen to Mohinder, Rites of Spring, Jerome's Dream and Hassan I Sabbah and he still thought Hawthorne Heights and Silverstein was what all Emo is.

well there are genres like emo that are hard to get people to realize. i have convinced a few people in the past. but most often i find that they dont like to listen. but i dont listen or know too much about the genre. so i try not to argue about it too often. but theres always genres like punk that i can talk about, like as i said before, the kids that think powerpop bands are punk bands. esspecially when they bring up image! which i have proven alot... showing pictures of simple plan, greenday and mcr to others like the virus, whorehouse of representitives and other bands. they usually get mad at that point and say "those are just clothes you find at a garage sale, simple plan wears hot topic clothes." i really wish i was being stereotypical right now, but a kid in my art class accually said that... -_-

Can you really blame them? Undergound bands to the large extent are only discovered by people who are actively searching for a particular sound. Most people are fed music from mainstream mediums and are given a limited option of what they like and don't like. They don't really explore all the options available to them. And lets not forget image, its what society uses to judge almost everything. From your race to the way you dress and compose yourself, people make assumptions based on commonly spread stereotypes.

Punks - ripped clothe, spiked hair, studded arm bands and collars etc.
Alternative/Grunge - dirty ripped jeans, long 'swoosh' hair and an open-minded laid back attitude.
Metal - black cloth, unshaven with long uncombed hair and an array of tattoos etc.

Even if a band played clear and concise pop rock, they could easily confuse their audience merely by dressing in a certain way. From observation, melody, harmony and instantly catchy beats are those that most people like (or instantly like). Thus they are the most popular and hence, they eventually become mainstream. People are fed these 'definitions' and classifications from birth, to expect to majority (or even 30% of people) to know their genres (specifically those originating from independant bands) would be quite naive.

Music is and always should be a bands main concern but face it, onstage you do have to look somewhat decent. Especially starting out, no one wants to come see a band that looks like hell and would probably go see a bunch of Myspace rejects over you if you don't take appearance somewhat serious.

agreed. music and image dont mix. gg allen never cared about what he wore(obviously if he usually came out naked with a leather collar, boots and gloves on). and he was popular enough to be on jerry springer... i laugh every time i remember that. hee hee. i wish people would at least be less closed minded and listen to what others say, instead of the same bullshit that people(usually whites) seem to think/say. "rap is crap" kinda stuff...

I would think most bands won't naturally look like they just woke up in the dump. But I feel that bands with a certain image recieve more credit than what I feel is due. Image can at times give a false sense of style.

I mean, I'd like to think that when you start looking like Avenged Sevenfold the next time you take a glance in the mirror, you should start asking yourself "Hey, why am I paying all these make-up artists to make me look like a corpse?"

I can see some bands using fashion as a gimmick, like KISS or Gwar because it makes the show a little more entertaining. But if you plan on moving around as much as some of the bands I've seen that fit in with A7X or From First To Last, the last thing you want is a pair of ball crushing girl pants. Frankly I'm surprised there haven't been any split jeans.

Well its not Gene Simmons does too much int he way of actually playing music... some of my friends even wonder if he actually knows how to play the bass.

As for gig/concert accidents, the biggest one I saw was when a guitarist hit the lead singer in the face and responded with a reflex reaction of putting his hand on his eye. Too bad he was still holding the microphone chord so he swung it in the process which hit the guitarist.

I was watching an interview with Taking Back Sunday and they described the exact same incident with their bass player. As for Gene Simmons, I've been playing bass for almost 8 year(sorry if that sounds like bragging) and he certainly doesn't show very much talent, if he does it isn't shown in KISS.

I've barely seen any local bands these days playing just plain old 'Rock.'

It's always, Hard rock, punk rock, metal rock, gothic rock, fast rock, alternative rock, ect., ect.

What is gonig on with the world?
PostPosted: Thu May 10, 2007 3:42 pm

probably that "rock" sucks nowadays? Alt rock and all that stuff is popular. so it will get more attention because more poeple like it. Specifically the bands.

Yeah, I guess that's partially true.
Actually, one of the main reasons people like certain bands is because they follow the group.

Let's take My Chemical Romance.
Let's face it.
We all know they're not that good.
They have a sliver of talent,
But almost everyone has been liking them because another person does.
So far that I've seen, anyways.

You should see my school.
Everyone's obsessed with popular music.
There's no variety.
Except for a select few.
It makes me sick.

I have nothing against My Chemical Romance,
But I'm just saying people should start making some of their own fXcking choices.
