She just won’t slow down. I don’t think anything can keep up. James took a steadying breath and tried to calm down. His mother had been attacking the building with a fierceness that he was unaccustomed to seeing. She was placing things on shelves and throwing other things in boxes for him to shove back to the storage room. On his trip back from the storage room he saw his father and waved to him. “Father this way!” James jerked his head in the direction his mother had taken off to. Together they approached an apartment that was seemingly quite.

Eli turned and nearly dropped the toy she was holding in her tail. He mate and son were standing in the doorway watching her like they were both afraid to come in. She had to giggle seeing how similar they both where. Neither was willing to risk the unknown mood she might be in.“Hello boys. Come on in!” She greeted them with a huge smile. She hoped her mate and child liked the decoration she had made to the place. She couldn’t really do much to the walls of the place but she had dragged shiny bits of string and fake snow and several fake small trees scattered about the apartment in what she thought was a fetching arrangement.

Swallowing Farle was first to brave the changed den his son following close behind. The place really was no warmer than when he left it and yet there was an air of warmth that Farle could not have explained had he tried. Smiling he nudged Eli as he pasted and whispered. “I’m glad you seem so well, this place looks amazing my love. You certainly have a knack for decorating a den.” His soft kind words were rewarded with a quick kiss and an impish smile from his mate. He watched she picked up her human toy with her tail. He wondered what that smile could mean for him.. he hoped it was good.

Wow I hope I find a girl that makes me so accepting even of the strangest changes. I don’t think that dad would have accepted that much change in one time from anyone else. I think he would have yelled and changed it all back to what it was. Mates are weird like that though. I think I’m gonna have to leave soon to go out and meet some foxes. It’s not like a family is simply going to move in here… I almost wish a few would though so mom wouldn’t have to spend all her time alone besides having dad around. James quietly wondered what the world away from this little home was like. He slipped out of the room trying to be as quite as possible so as not to disturb his parents.

Eli turned to ask her son what he thought about the changes when she realized he was gone. “That little scamp. He’s gone and wondered off again.” She chuckled thinking of all the little messes her son got into when he did things like this. Of course it was never anything to dangerous. Or at least she had never heard of him doing anything to dangerous. She was sure he had done something or other that was a bit more than reckless, but neither he nor Farle ever mentioned anything happening so she figured that James was safe enough. He was old enough now to look after himself. So she hoped.

“Don’t worry about him. I’m sure he’s just gone to the top of this human dwelling again and started snooping through every corner of the place. You know how he is about finding and looking at new things. You know after seeing all of this I think I know where he gets it.” Farle again admired the work Eli had done in the den. She had really moved and added a lot of things. He looked back to her and searched her movements for signs of strain. He didn’t see any. He was both surprised and pleased. Eli had never been the strongest of foxes, but for her to accomplish this much and be ok, well it was a miracle.

Having grown bored with exploring the building James proceeded to head outside into the chill of the frozen world which had no effect on him. He was happy for his mom having found something that she wanted to do. He pitied his father knowing that there was no way by any stretch of the imagination that she would stop now that she started. For himself though James felt a bit lost. He sat down on the path he had swept off early that day and looked down into the snow. He sat and thought for a while not keeping track of the time.

After showing every single change to the den and sharing her plans with changing the other placing in the human building Eli still hadn’t seen her son come back and was starting to get a bit worried. “Farle do you think James is ok?” Eli looked about the room as if hoping to see James pop out from behind something like he did when he was a kit. When nothing happened she looked at Farle. He was looking out the window. He seemed so calm a part of Eli was annoyed, not that she’d ever say it. Their son was gone and he was just looking out the window.

“No need to worry about him Eli.” Farle raised a paw and pointed out the window. “He’s down there on the path by where I left the food. See?” He waited for Eli to come and look before resting a paw on her back keeping her from rushing off downstairs into the cold to drag their boy back inside. “He seems to be thinking things over. I think we should give him a bit more time and then head down and see what’s troubling him.” It seemed like a reasonable plan to Farle who had enacted it on more than one occasion when James was a kit. The look in his mate’s eyes told him to pick a different option though so he gave in. “Alright lets go see what’s wrong with him.” Eli was just too hard for Farle to resist.

Not paying attention to anything James jumped when he felt a paw tap his tail. He turned to see his mother and his father. His mother’s paw was resting on his tail and he could read her face as plain as day. She was worried. She always got such a sad look when she worried over something. “Hey mom.” He gave her a chipper smile that quickly faded when he figured out that she wasn’t buying it. “What’s wrong mom? Dad?” He looked to his father who had a flat plain face that was showing no expression. It wasn’t surprising to James, but it did make getting a read on the situation a bit harder.

“James… well..” Now that she was in front of him it was hard to come up with a way to ask what she wanted. Fidgeting Eli looked to Farle for advice on how to proceed. He just nodded at her and that only made things harder. She huffed at him and then looked back to her son. “Your father and I have been talking and we’ve noticed that you well.. seems like you have been looking further and further away from home. It’s not just every now and then either. I notice it when you sweep the walkway.” She didn’t want to say that she had been watching him from the window for months.

Farle sighed. It seemed his little Eli was going to beat around the bush, and then when he had just about been ready to step in she finally got part of what she wanted to say off her chest. He decided to further it along just bit to help clarify the situation for his son. “Your mother wanted to know if you were bored here and wanted to leave home.” Farle didn’t particularly like the idea of his son leaving home, but of course he knew that his son was a grown fox and capable of making his own life decisions. Twining his tail with that of his mate Farle awaited his son’s response.

“Yes.. I would like to see the world, but well with mom being sick and not liking the weather I didn’t’ just want to leave you both alone.” James felt a bit awkward sharring this with his parents, but they had brought it up first so it should be ok right? He looked at his mother’s face that seemed on the verge of tears and he felt so bad. “I do love you both. I’ll stay with you. It’ll be ok. I’m sure this is just a phase or something.” He shrugged and laughed. Sadly it sounded strained even to his own ears. He didn’t know what else he could say. He tried to smile but it never reached his eyes.

Eli shook her head. “No. I know when you’re lying; you’re as bad at it as I am James. Your father and I..” At a cough from Farle she sighed. “We want you to be happy and we don’t think you are here. Is there anything we can do to make things better for you?” She didn’t want to just trap her only child here with her, but at the same time the idea of James leaving physically hurt her. It just wasn’t fair, there had to be something that she could do to keep her son close, but also make him happy. It was true there weren’t many foxes in the area but… what if they all moved?

“If you don’t want to stay then you don’t have to James.” Farle put a paw over Eli’s shoulders. “Your mother and I just want you to be happy. If you do leave, just promise that you’ll come back and visit.” Eli made a noise and so Farle looked down at her. “Dear I know you want James around, but we both know he’s a grown boy and should go explore a bit in the world. I promise though we’ll always have a nest her for him to come back to.” He nuzzled her and was satisfied to see her blush. He looked at his son and smiled.
