Farle took a long puff from his pipe and looked at his son in mild disappointment. He knew that his son was still rather young and as such prone to being more immature than older more world weary adults. It bothered him though how darn bouncy is boy was though. He shook his head and headed back to the abandoned apartment complex he and his family called home leaving his son continue his escapades in the snow. The apartment was cold like always and more of the wallpaper looked like it was peeling off. Frowning Farle lifted a paw and smoothed the cracked section he could reach before hearing a cough coming from the kitchen. He headed towards it always glad to see his girl Eli.

Eli coughed and inched closer to the stove which was the only source of heat in the whole apartment. She had a nice warm blanket around her though so she always worried about getting to close to the stove. At the sound of shuffling she looked up and smiled at Farle. He was her hero and savior quite literally. She had been abandoned as a kit with only a human toy to remember her parents by. She had been nearly frozen to death in an alley when a young handsome Farle had passed and taken notice of her. He took her in and took care of her until the two had eventually fallen for one another had had one son who was the spitting image of his father. As Farle came closer she nuzzled him as he leaned down and kissed her forehead softly. “I love you.”

“And I love you my cute little Eli. Careful not to get to close to the heat or you’ll burn up.” Farle smiled as Eli nodded. She was such a kind and gentle fox that he knew he was lucky to have her. He never could imagine why her parents had left her. Even now she kept the human toy soldier a reminder of them. Farle left his beloved to huddle in her warmth as he decided to get some food for her and his boy. Leaving the apparent he saw his son James still playing about in the snow and sweeping off the path that led to their home. It had been swept enough for Farle’s taste since he was used to the cold and snow didn’t bother him, but his son always had the notion that his mother might come out and walk the path so James kept on sweeping until the path was clear of snow since Eli was so delicate when it came to the cold. Passing his son Farle simply nodded and continued on his was to town to swipe some food from the local humans.

James smiled as his father passed. He is probably off to go get dinner. I hope he gets something good from the Human's food place. It’s too cold to get meat so maybe some cheese and bread would be nice. Of course the humans at the supermarket will give us meat anyway if we beg. Don’t humans realize that when there is snow on the ground that meat freezes? It’s like nawing on a rock. Rolling his eyes James finished up sweeping the path with his tail and then trotted up to the apartment complex to make sure the other apartments were still alright. He knew his father thought he was a fool for doing this but James figured that since he and his family could live in the apartment that maybe other foxes could come and join them. It would be nice to have a few other foxes around. And once spring comes we can steal some seeds from humans and start our own little garden. I am sure mother will like that. and I won't have to mess with the heating thing pressing all those round things...

Extracting herself from the blankets Eli walked to the window. She saw the path had been neatly swept and smiled. James was good boy and kept the path so nice and clear just in case she wanted to go out. She didn’t have the heart to tell him that she hated the cold that he and his father were so immune to. Lifting a paw Eli pushed her hair back to get a better view of the landscape. It was beautiful of that there could be no doubt. The coldness of it though chilled Eli to the bone. The trees looked so dead this time of year and the snow sparkled with an unearthly glitter of perfection that life could never have. Spring, summer, and even fall were fun. Winter though.. that was this place’s most horrid season in her eyes. It was true she had met Farle in the winter, but that was the season’s only good memory she had of it. Winter was when her parents let. Winter was when she got sick. She hated it.

Farle continued his walk at a leisurely pace until he found himself at the edge of town. He saw a few humans milling about but most were in their vehicles and indoors to stay out of the cold as much as possible. He snuck up a dumpster behind a fast food place. Humans threw out so much after ordering more than they could eat he was shocked that they didn’t just order less. Still a bag of uneaten French fries or a burger was always a good way to get something to eat. After examining a few bags Farle found one bag that had two orders of French fries untouched and still warm. He scooped it up and continued on way to the supermarket ready for this days act.

After finishing checking the other apartments James headed back his own family’s flat. His mother was by the window which was unusual. “Mom are you feeling ok?” She turned with painful slowness and nodded smiling at her son, but her eyes seemed like they were crying despite her cheerful smile. He smiled back out of reflex but he was worried about his mother. His family being alone like they were here was not good for her. “Hey mom lets clean up this place. I’m sure if it looked prettier than maybe we could forget about the cold. I know where the storage rooms are in this place and there is some colorful wallpapers and stuff. I’m sure with your eye for colors we could make this place look passable as den.”

Her son appearing behind her had surprised her and Eli had frozen for half a second before turning with a forced smile on her face. She would never let her son see how much she was depressed or upset. Not ever. She nodded that she was alright. Then her son surprised her. He knew the complex so well? For a moment she wondered how often he explored the rooms. She supposed since he was a kit. After all he had grown up in this building and even though she didn’t know the layout to well that didn’t mean Farle and James didn’t. “Of course. I would love to be able to decorate this place a bit.” A heartfelt giggle started to creep into her heart as she thought about how surprised Farle would be when he came home.

Farle made his way to the supermarket parking lot in front of the entrance. He scattered the fries out on the ground before letting the bag blow across the parking lot. He then waited for a human to walk out of the store he pathetically whined and tried tasted a fry before spitting it out and trying another. The human female seemed to take pity on him and gave him an entire loaf of bread. He hid the bread in his hat with his pipe out of sight. And then repeated the act again to the next human who came out. He did this again and again until he had a size-able hidden stash. He slinking into the store and stole a few plastic grocery bags from an old human clerk who was more asleep than awake at his station. The other clerks saw but only smiled or laughed. Taking the bag to his hidden stash Farle bagged the food and then headed out behind the store and pawed at the door ready for his second act of the day.

James smiled and headed to the storage supply area slowing his brisk walk so that his mother could keep up. “This way mom.” He fiddled a bit with a door a bit to enter. He then walked up and tipped over a box. Colorful wallpaper skittered over the floor. Some floral patterns and many other designs were on them. Some were faded but others were still wrapped in plastic and looked new. It was amazing the amount of things that humans left behind when they didn’t want a place anymore. It was how Farle had furnished their den. Humans had left many things behind and Farle had dragged them to a room that had a comfortable view and was always cool even in the summer. Of course things Farle didn’t know what they were he left alone.. James on the other paw studied the humans in town enough to learn what most of the things in the apartments were.

Eli gasped at the selection before her. She thought of all of the rooms of the apartment. Oh the things she could do. Looking around she also saw some fake plants and picture frames coated in dust. Eyes still wide she snatched up several pretty wallpapers and pointed to a few more. “James grab those. Then come back and get those fake plants.. I’ll have to come back again to see if there is anything else I want.” Eli indicated the plants with her tail and then grabbed a candle on her way out. The apartment in her mind started to look more and more like a den. Of course she would have to clean and dust, but James would help with that. And when Farle got home it would be done or else he’d help her finish. Either way she was getting a more comfortable den that they would all enjoy.

Farle waited patiently until the door at the back of the store was opened. He grinned internally. He recognized this human male. The male reached down and scratched behind Farle’s ears as he muttered some human nonsense. Farle stood still and let the human pet him. Once the human finished Farle stood and waited a while longer. The human came back with more food. Sausage links. Farle gingerly took them from the portly human’s hand and then nodded in thanks before taking off to his hidden stash. Adding the food to the stash Farle picked up all the bags and did his best to tie them together so that he could set them over his bag having one bag balance out another. Then he took off to beg from other food stops around town in order to add to his load. Not all of his visits would bear fruit, but any food was better than none at all. Trotting through a backyard Farle spotted a child’s sled and used it to relive his burden. It was easier to drag the sled rather than haul the food on his back.

James spent the next few hours following his mother’s commands and wondering if perhaps he shouldn’t have shown her that room. His paws were starting to hurt and he was trying to calculate just how many layers of dust he had on him. He figured at least seven. His mother seemed frail but she had an amazing amount of strength behind her once she got excited about something. Coughing could be heard from the apartment as James shoved the next plastic tub of decorations his mother had picked out for the den with his shoulders. He padded in to see her fighting the curtains and kicking up more dust. “Here let me mom.”

Eli gave her son half a glance and then no more she stepped back and let him wrestle with the curtains. She had been dusting and scrubbing most of the time and felt well.. filthy and fulfilled. She started pawing through the plastic tub James had shoved up to the room. The colors in this box were rich and pretty in her mind as Eli lifted a small glass human angel. It was one of many in the tub. Some were clear and others were colored in vibrant hues. Why was it she had so many ideas and not enough rooms to play with? Blinking Eli realized she was wrong.. she had a whole building to play with! “James dear I have a question..”

Farle looked up at the sky. It was already getting dark. He had been gone a bit longer than he expected, still today was a fairly good day after all he had quite a haul of food to bring back home. Glad he had taken the sled when he did. There was no way he could take all the food back otherwise. Pulling the sled behind him Ferle looked at his home. There were some doors open that he could see to some of the apartments. Hhmmff! James has been playing with the human building again. Honestly that boy has no concept of danger. One of these days he’ll walk in the den with singed hair saying he electrified himself trying to rewire a picture box or something. Little fool makes his mother and I worry without thinking.
