yes and same. I went back to read what I wrote years later....not even 2 minutes went by before I was saying to myself "Nope, nope, nope, wheres the delete button, wheres the delete button? I can't let this live with my name on it!"

Ah, a kindred spirit! Kunoichi gets frustrated with me for constantly editing my writing. Although I understand where she's coming from... Sometimes the constant editing can become counterproductive and I know that I'm a bit foolish for obsessively seeking perfection, but... It's a process. I just can't have something on my account that I'm not proud of.

Which, ironically, is one of my fanfic annoyances: when an author doesn't update their story for ages. Especially if it's such a great story and it's just hanging at this one pivotal moment in the storyline. Ugh. It's torture, I tell ya!

Yes that is a big pitfall among writers. I was stuck there for a long time. Omg you just reminded me of TWO fanfics I LOVED but the person never posted. One I have been waiting for a post for 8 years, not a peep. I just want something like I abandoned this story but never a peep

The other is around 6 years, same story...I mean situation wise lol (puns xp )

I am guilty of being one of those authors who don't update in forever. Buy in my defense, it's mostly because of writer's block or I've already written the chapter but I absolutely hate the flow of it. sweatdrop

Oh, no. I completely understand the issues with writer's block and with having a chapter that you've just been staring at for ages wondering how the heck you're going to fix it because, to you, it's a total wreck. sweatdrop

It usually helps to have a friend who can look it over for you and tell you if the flow of the chapter really is messed up or if it's all just in your head. I've used Kunoichi as a sounding board before. And I've waited, cringing, many a time while she reads it over via pm only to have her say, "Yeah, it's fine. What's the big deal?"

Topic related: I hate it when authors have unnecessarily long author's notes in which they're giving multiple, painfully detailed shout-outs that are better suited for private messaging. I mean, I'm happy that you've found a kindred spirit in AnimeLuvr666 and all but, it'd be best to save that multi-paragraph response for a pm and not trick me into thinking I've a new, wonderfully long chapter to read.

One of the only times I've seen it as acceptable for there to be a chapter comprised of only author's notes is when it's either an apology for abandoning the story/farewell or they're going on an extended hiatus and will remove the author's note upon returning. The second one is pretty rare.

Of course apologies/farewells are a different issue entirely. What I'm referring to are the responses to reviews when the reviewer is a member of FFnet and can be easily contacted via private message as opposed to a superfluous message inside a story's author's note. I've seen it done several times and sometimes those responses contained spoilers to the story's plot. emotion_0A0

Oh, definitely. There's a fanfic in the Hobbit fandom that my eyes keep straying to. It has lots of favorited/followed and reviews, but the only thing holding me back is the sentence structure. There's no clear breaks between paragraphs and the dialogue isn't broken apart.

Ex: "blah, blah" said this. "blah, blah," said that. then "blah, blah" etc.

I like being able to follow when there's breaks in conversation, otherwise my eyes get tired really fast.

I can't help but feel a twinge of jealousy when I see things like that. emotion_facepalm

But that's one thing that bugs me: paragraph structure. It's so irritating for me to try to read anything like that and it makes me feel a bit dumb because I find that I have a hard time keeping up with who is saying what. Oh, that and the authors who write their dialogue like so:

Jane: Did you get to go to the concert?

Emery: No, but I heard Doug did. Didn't you, Doug?

Douglas: Yeah, it was awesome!

Emery: You're so lucky!

Because isn't that against the rules on FFnet, at least? And yet I see it quite often. Ugh.

Omg, YES I agree with this whole-heartedly! I can't STAND it when I come across fanfictions that obliterate paragraph structure. More specifically when they do not start a new line for dialogue. Or when they use script format. It makes my eye twitch.

I also CANNOT STAND when fanfic authors completely break the character of canon characters. It makes my writer self go into rage fits!

Yeah, um... That annoys me, it really does, but what makes it worse is when some half-baked reason is given for the canon character being OOC. Such as some random "love spell" cliché and the like. What's funny is that in the series True Blood, the writers broke the character of one of the canon characters and it was simply awful. The reason was because of a "spell" that could only alter vampires and yet there was really no detail given as to why that spell worked on the undead and how the witch came into such knowledge. It was just a way for the writers to get the main character to take a shower with the now totally different character. emotion_facepalm

emotion_donotwant Omg, that drives me crazy! Or whenever they break the rules of the fandom when it's not even an AU.

Omg I hate that like a mofo as well! I mean I recall a story in which a guy is supposed to be a I-don't-care-as-long-as-you-don't-get-in-my-way person. They made him be like WE'RE BESTIES! to another character.

They said something like sorry if I'm slightly OOC

here's slight I--I

Here's where they are dramallama not even on the scale

and yes not AU

I am guilty of taking ages to update anything. And starting new stories all the time. Although at least I think the longest I've ever taken was like 2 years? redface I don't ever intend on actually completely abandoning anything though. If I did, I'd update the description to say that.

OOC bugs me. Well--it depends on the surrounding plot, and if they actually warn for OOC/AU, because I love AU stories and sometimes OOC really works. But when someone's just made Snape a really fluffy loving person who cuddles puppies and adores Harry for no flipping reason, um. No. emotion_donotwant

I also hate the epic-length author's notes. Especially on oneshots, where the AN ends up being longer than the actual story.

When people don't proofread at all. I don't mind occasional spelling and grammar mistakes but when it's every sentence, I turn into a dragon of rage and hit the back button. Just...no. evil

When people are apparently just adding in canon scenes, without changing them at all, or editing how they were written. That's plagiarism. And also, really jarring because it doesn't fit their own writing style at all.

And a big one because I love hurt/comfort. When the author has just put a character through something that is literally impossible to survive, or that would seriously put them in the hospital for ages, and they are somehow walking, talking, and fine. stare
