What are some things that FF.net authors do that make your eye twitch? For me, there are a few things. A good start would be whenever I see "Just read, I suck at summaries." It ANNOYS me. If you can't even MAKE a summary, lousy or not, how are we supposed to expect you to have the ability to write an interesting story?

Also, putting in an authors note in the MIDDLE of a chapter! That completely ruins the flow for the readers and not to mention it just looks bad. I can't stand it. Just put your A/N at the top or the bottom.

I second your annoyances, Kunoichi. What annoys me is when an author complains about not receiving X amount of reviews (to the readers, no less, in an author's note) and/or when an author holds a story hostage- refusing to update until they get more reviews.

Rushed fanfics makes my eye twitch in uncontrollable rage. Like those poor writers who feel pressured to churn out as many chapters as they can to the point where the original flow of the story is lost.

I can tolerate reading them at the start and I think a part of me only continues reading in the hopes that the writer improves either minor mistakes or that they'll eventually go back over and say "I can see how you got lost here".

I hate it when the story gets good then you come to a CH and find out that they gave it up. What I hate the most is the stories with CH's so SMALL and I mean like "I typed 3 paragraphs...that should be enough"

Yeah... That definitely irks me unless they dropped the story for a good reason (i.e., they had something pop up in their life, they're getting flamed like mad, or something else that could impact their writing/desire to write). As for really, really short chapters... those just get under my skin. I mean, unless it's a drabble-fic, if the chapter is that minuscule it comes across like the author doesn't care. I say if you, as a writer, aren't feeling inspired enough to write a decent chapter then you should wait for inspiration to come to you instead of churning out chapters the way Gaia churns out recolors: robotic, forced, and without much thought or effort given.

I get where you're coming from and I also understand the viewpoint of those authors who rush chapters. I, too, have felt the pressure of receiving favorites/follows/reviews and thinking "Oh my gosh, I need to give them something!" Especially when you get those really pushy reviewers. It's flattering to a point, but then it sorta starts to feel like harassment.

However, I'm always going back over my story to fix and tweak and improve things for clarity. There's always a sentence that could be phrased better or something like that. I've talked about it before with Kunoichi and I know I've irritated her when she's mentioned that she's working on a new chapter for her story and I'm just like "Yeah, I'm editing chapter X and I just need to edit 30 more..." sweatdrop

But... When an author is constantly rushing chapters and pushing the story along to the point that I feel mental whiplash, that gets frustrating. It completely turns me off from reading the story if there are a million and one errors and plot-holes to boot simply because "let's get this story over with already." It saddens me when I start reading a great story and then it all goes to hell because it's being rushed.

Oh, definitely. There's a fanfic in the Hobbit fandom that my eyes keep straying to. It has lots of favorited/followed and reviews, but the only thing holding me back is the sentence structure. There's no clear breaks between paragraphs and the dialogue isn't broken apart.

Ex: "blah, blah" said this. "blah, blah," said that. then "blah, blah" etc.

I like being able to follow when there's breaks in conversation, otherwise my eyes get tired really fast.

I can't help but feel a twinge of jealousy when I see things like that. emotion_facepalm

But that's one thing that bugs me: paragraph structure. It's so irritating for me to try to read anything like that and it makes me feel a bit dumb because I find that I have a hard time keeping up with who is saying what. Oh, that and the authors who write their dialogue like so:

Jane: Did you get to go to the concert?

Emery: No, but I heard Doug did. Didn't you, Doug?

Douglas: Yeah, it was awesome!

Emery: You're so lucky!

Because isn't that against the rules on FFnet, at least? And yet I see it quite often. Ugh.

Oh god..that kind of dialogue... -claws at eyes- emotion_0A0

I just...I just can't. Recently a friend of mine asked me to look at an acquaintance's fanfic. My inner writer died on the inside. Because the first chapter should have been split into a prologue and possibly two other chapters. I was ready to cry and refused to read the second chapter. emotion_facepalm

lol reminds me how I needed filler for a story I did long ago (which is now deleted THANK GOD it was bad). I had a moment in which something shocking happened. So I did something like that only I didn't do the name thing and each person just said a one line like

EX: person pops out of a big cake

"Whoa what the heck?"
"I was wondering why the cake was so big"
"If someone was in it does this mean we can't eat it?"

At first I was worried that no one would know who said what line. Then I noticed no one would care about who said what, they care who and why that person was in the cake and why they popped out now. So in certain situations like this I think it fits (without the name thing). Unless the convo in question is actual the focal point.

I was at that point one time so I stopped and did what I'm doing now which was to write MOST if not all of what I had out and then post it up bit by bit. It gives me TONS of time to continue to type while they read up what I posted.

Usually, in my experience, that's a recipe for disaster. It's always horribly awkward when you're asked to read something and that something turns out to be terrible. You also bring up another thing that annoys me with fanfics: chapter structure. Sometimes writers don't know where to end the chapter and it either gets cut off at the most inopportune moment (not a cliffhanger) or the chapter seems to go on forever and the reader starts to feel like they're being punished. Of course I'm exaggerating about the "punishing" thing, but you get my point. emotion_awesome

About pumping out chapters even when you aren't really feeling the story at the moment? I've done that before as well, which led to me taking a bit of a break from writing and instead focusing on editing what I had written. I felt bad for taking a break but it really helped me get back into the feel of the story.

yes and same. I went back to read what I wrote years later....not even 2 minutes went by before I was saying to myself "Nope, nope, nope, wheres the delete button, wheres the delete button? I can't let this live with my name on it!"

Ah, a kindred spirit! Kunoichi gets frustrated with me for constantly editing my writing. Although I understand where she's coming from... Sometimes the constant editing can become counterproductive and I know that I'm a bit foolish for obsessively seeking perfection, but... It's a process. I just can't have something on my account that I'm not proud of.

Which, ironically, is one of my fanfic annoyances: when an author doesn't update their story for ages. Especially if it's such a great story and it's just hanging at this one pivotal moment in the storyline. Ugh. It's torture, I tell ya!
