Has anyone heard of the Irish author John Connolly? He writes incredibly dark private detective stories with supernatural streaks going through them. If you liked Sin City, you will love his books! Especially the later ones.

I'm reading Kokoro by Natsume Soseki, as is required for my Japanese history class... but it is actually a really good book. Despite the fact it being written in 1914 and originally not published in english, the culture gap is hardly noticable, and the feelings conveyed are quite powerful. I'd reccomend it.

Another good read I finished recently (well, about a few months ago) that I would seriously reccomend is House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. Pick up a copy.

Am reading "The Guardian Cycle" by Julia Gray. 5 Books in the series
The Dark Moon
The Jasper Forest
The Crystal Desert
The Red Glacier
Alyssa's Ring

Excellent quintology following the travels of a crippled hero, Terrel, as he quests to save his home and the lands around. He gets support from his girlfriend, who is in a coma, of a sort, Alyssa, and three ghosts.

An exceptionally good read. At least in my opinion. Great writing of the fantasy genre.

Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris, my new literary hero. He's up there with Palahniuk when it comes to humour.

If anyone doesn't know Sedaris, he's the brother of Amy Sedaris, from MTV's old show Strangers with Candy [she was Candy]. He's an amazing literary talent. biggrin

Okay, who knew that a bibliophile like me wouldn't be able to resist reading instead of around studying? *raises hand* I picked up Lirael by Garth Nix last week. Got hooked. Went to Barnes and Noble yesterday. Bought Abhorsen, the next book in the series. Am currently a mere chapter into it. And as soon as I get off of here, I'm heading straight for it. Studying can wait, right? *coughs*(two finals tomorrow...both of which I need to study for...)

Oh good I will. He wrote down the author's name and said that private detectives and the supernatural were his 2 favorite genre's mixed into one.

GR - What types of books are those?

ROYA! I LOVE THOSE BOOKS! *really excited*

But did you read Sabriel? Because that's actually the first book in the series. I read that one when I was in the 8th grade, and I bought Lirael and Abhorsen within days of their coming out in hardcover. biggrin They're soooo brilliantly written. Nix is a genius.

Uma, they're fantasy books, set in a world that Garth Nix invented. Sabriel is about a young necromancer, except she puts the walking dead back into death instead of raising them, using seven bells as her aid. Lirael is set about 14 years after Sabriel, and it's the story of a young girl who is hoping to be a daughter of the Clayr, who are women who foresee things in ice, and her journey. Abhorsen is about Sabriel, who has become the Abhorsen, and her family....and stuff. It's been a while since I read them.

Dee, yeah, I read Sabriel a bit ago, after reading Lirael for the first time. VERY good series; I usually don't reread books less than a month apart, but, well *shrugs* What can I say, they're good. mrgreen

Lirael is actually nearly 20 years after Sabriel, and it deals with a girl whose mother was a member of the Clayr, a family of seeresses who see the future in the ice of their glacier home. Abhorsen is the story of Lirael as she tries to take on her new heritage and defeat a monstrous evil that is bent on the destruction of all life, using a massive army of the Dead. Nix is a genius, all right. I'm hooked.

I will agree, the Sabriel series is a pretty good one. Normally I'm not much into fantasy and all that, but upon finishing Abhorson I was just in awe by how well Nix managed to create such a thing. It left me in tears, no lie.

I love the Sabriel books as well. I picked up the first years ago, and have been hooked since. Have any of you read Shade's Children by Garth Nix as well? It was really good, kinda on the dark side, but highly enjoyable. I reccomend that one as well.
