I feel like ill answer your question. The best modern maker would probably be Joseph Curtin. But his violins will run you above 30,000 dollars. So unless your rich thats out of the question. Since your just beginning you can get a cheap one, but ive always thought this, why not get one you can play for a long time instead of one you'll want to trade in in a year. A really good way to get a very high quality violin for a good price is find an up and coming maker who hasnt become popular yet. His violins could be very good and a lot cheaper then most because his/her name isnt established yet.

If you don't have the money to buy a violin, you can always rent. For different kinds, if you mean different sizes, there are violins from 1/4 to full. I've only been playing for a year so I don't know who makes the best kinds.
