Well, it really depends on what kind of price range you've got. My advice is if you have a friend who plays the violin, and a violin shop in your area, take your friend with you and have them help you pick a violin out that sounds nice. It's hard to say which makers are really good, most make copies of the masters now, such as Stradivarius and Guernari.

Well you should play the violin! I don't know who is known for making excellent violins sad I've only been playing the violin for 2 years wink I can't tell you if it is hard to learn or not ---if you really want me to tell you if it is hard or not then send me mail cause I don't wanna say anything about that here where everyone can read it.....anyways if you really like to play the violin and you play with it from the heart and play with love, I'm sure you'll do fine! One last thing, I suggest that you don't buy a violin yet. Rent one and see how you do! If you absolutely love it and wanna continue playing the violin THEN you should buy a violin! smile

Well, I'de say the best violin for a beginner through intermediate would be a Czech Republic violin, it's much easier to produce quality sound without trying too hard. Though, for a beginner I would recommend a copy of the Antonius Stradivarius, they're about at the same level as you would be, which is what you want. Once you get more advanced you have a huge range of violins from a traditional Stradivarius to a Guardivarius.
As for a learning it's different for everyone, you have to be determined to play, spend at least 3 hours a day practiceing. You should get a teacher you can work and get along with that has as much devotion with you as you do with your violin.

Best violin is the strativarios (cant spell)

the Strativarius violins are priceless razz (although Bernstein owns 2 and uses them to stretch strings)

and the "copies" of the stradivarius violins are widely used in schools.
I don't know about the states but in Canada, the most reliable instrument store would be Remenyi, the good ones are around $8000 if you plan to go far into it. Although chinese hand crafted violins began to show up in world markets for a cheap price but excellent quality. Like, I bought my chinese hand crafted 5 years ago for appr. $300 canadian in China, and it's now estimated $5000-8000 Canadian here.
But Violas are another topic.

if your just starting out playing the violin, don't worry about getting a good one, maybe in a few years when your better at the instrument you could get a new better one

When I first started violin, my violin teacher helped me pick a violin that was just right for me. You can't just get ANY violin. Violins are different sizes. You would need someone to help you pick one out that knows what they're doing.

Why didn't you start jet??!! Violin is a difficult instrument, you can learn it the best if you're young. I began when I was five...

Hey, don't discourage her. If she wants to learn, let her. I mean, I've only started a year ago when I was 15 and I'd consider myself really good for someone who's only been playing for a year.

Anyway, I think Stradivarius copies are good for those just starting out.

Maybe it sounds like: "You're to late now." But I didn't mean that. I wanted to say that if she wants to learn, she must not wait, but begin now. I'm just surprised that she doesn't play it jet.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with starting to play later! I only started when I was 14. I've been playing for only 4 years, and I play at rival level with my teacher (a concert violinist). We've done alot of stuff together. If you're willing to work hard and love it, and work everyday, you can do anything.

The thing about starting early is that you can get burnt out if you're not careful. I wish I had started earlier, but we couldn't afford a violin/lessons until I was 11, and my mom didn't want me to play. It may be the same situation; I asked my mom for a violin when I was four, but I got one at 11.

It's never too late to learn, but it's a lot easier when you're young. smile
About the violin: I'm hireing a violin and a viola from the musicschool, and I think that's probably the best thing to do if you're not sure about continuing to play. Violins are expensive 3nodding
But if you can't or don't want to hire a violin then you shouldn't pick the most expensive violin you can get your hands on, but it's also important that you're comfortable with it. I don't know how you do where you live, but in Sweden you can borrow a violin that you like and try it out at home before you buy it.
I want a violin of my own too, but I need one that I can use for a long time because I've decided to study to become a violin/viola teacher. And I've already been playing for 11years.
Good luck with the violin biggrin
