People pick them cause they think they are cool. Ohdinn picks a man/woman because he has a perpose for em, but freyja gets first pick of the fallen. So even if ohdinn has a perpose freyja can take that soul anyways. Since alot of the other gods/goddesses aren't greatly worshipped the main ones are in the spotlight. So lots of people are into Ohdinn and Freyja.

My patrons follow the seasons. From Winter Solstice to the Vernal Equinox my patron is Skaði, then from the Vernal Equinox to Summer Solstice is Víðar. Summer Solstice to the Autumn Equinox is Týr, and from Autumn Equinox to Winter Solstice is Odin.

The first pick of those fallen in battle is not Freyja's.. not the last time I checked.. She's not the boss of Valhöll, and the Valkyrjur ride first to fetch the greatest of warriors to take them to Valhöll...

Heilsan Allir,
The notion of being 'called' is something that I often work with people to understand the process. Now, for some, the process of being called, is indeed a bolt out of the blue process, and yet, from an ancestral folkway point of view, we are usually dealing with a process which is a natural extension of our own character and that of our ancestors.
Given that in the modern world, we have a wealth of information at our fingertips, it is relatively easy to, if one wishes to, investigate the premise of Monotheism, and its adherents and to find their reasoning to be lacking. Invariably this leads to cognitive dissonance, which tends to lead to an individual starting to 'search'.
Consider the analogy of a computer system, which had a firewall up. When the firewall goes down, you can then be seen from anywhere by anyone with the right capability. Likewise, you've effectively dropped your personal 'firewall' and have essentially broadcast that you're looking. At that point, certain things tend to happen. You might discover subtle hints, which often actually come from our Fylgia or from our ancestors, rather than the gods or goddesses themselves.
In our lore, it is quite rare for the gods or goddesses to directly interfere in the lives of particular people, that is reserved for heroes of our sagas; a rare breed, but one which it is invariably given that we are expected to emulate.
As such I am less inclined to consider that I was 'called' but more that I recognised where I was supposed to be, and so returned home, and was welcomed home when I reached out.
That said, through a process of many years of interaction and developing an affinity with certain of the gods and goddesses, I have indeed developed a relationship with them, albeit, I don't agree with the notion that they are my patrons, but instead my Vinr.

Wow, I was unaware of some many people claiming Odin, and reading Gray Raven's remarks make me question my ideals a smidgen. I don't know what my patron deity is. This is what I know, so sit back and enjoy my little story.
I went to college in England, I majored in Archaeology with a minor in Antrhopology. My area of expertise was anomolous artifacts and lost civilizations. A ripe field for Biblical Archaeology. Believe me, I researched the living crap out of the Bible and tried to find Archaeological proof behind it. Sure I found things here and there, and I thought I could finally believe in the Bible, until I read a book by Famenke (I believe that is his name). After that book, I realized that there were severe holes in my theories and my findings. Everything came undone and I didn't know what to believe in anymore. Then I began to have dreams about Odin talking to me. I thought it strange since I never really considered the Nordic religion. I began to research the religion. Learn what I could and verify it in a way that would work for me. Slowly the pieces began to fit and the archaeological evidence began to vindicate my new obsession. I still have Odin dreams. I then learned that Odin talks to nobles. I am a descendant to the house of Baltimore, and my name translates from Welsh to mean Noble Birth. So I decided to go with it and adopt Odin as the main dude I talked to. I would have rather had Njord or Verdande or even Skuld, but nope...Odin.
Now I'm not so sure if Odin called me or if I chose Odin for myself. I guess I have some reflecting to do. I try to honor all the gods, but maybe I'm not doing something right. I'll have to look into this a bit more.

Which reminds me, I am a newly convert, so is there a place to get all the good readings? I've only got my hands on the Eddas, poetic and Elder. Any help would be appreciated.

Thor chose me from a very young age. When I was told about Jesus and the Christian faith I never ever felt a connection with them. I always felt there was something else out there for me. Once I read about the Norse gods, Thor pretty much SCREAMED to me. I knew there was something about him that felt right. I just assumed I really liked vikings, but the older I got the more I found myself bowing my head in prayer and praying to Thor. Odin and Heimdall are also close to me.

When I first started into Asatru, I felt a very strong connection with Tyr...but I'm not sure if I'd say I was chosen. However, because of some life happenings, I've been feeling a bit closer to Frigg, although I'd hardly say I've been chosen by her.
So for the moment I don't really have a patron god and/or goddess.

Skadi and Ull are the only ones I would consider having the title of patrons, and perhaps to a far lesser extent Odin. I feel somewhat like I've neglected him even though I know he's been present. It's unintentional though, so I hope I'll be forgiven. sweatdrop
