Any glucerin or pertoleum-based is absolutely not suggested from fresh piercings or tattoos. Including lube, vaseline, oils, neosporin, antibiotic ointment...
These ingredients cause an airtight seal and unless it's wiped off almost immediately (ie, you were just using it while you shower) will trap bacteria and sweat in the skin and prevent air from crossing cellular borders and healing. You are trapping dead skin cells, inviting infection, and keeping your skin from regenerating. The only instance where you should be using these products is if the damage to your skin will be great if you don't use them: as in, your newly healing skin is being exposed to chemicals.
Don't be lazy. Getting your tattoo wet is fine, just don't soak it. And use the purest non-additive lotion you can find. Your body heals much better without mucking up it's defensive mechanisms.

Using vaseline RIGHT after the tat is done IS fine. You wrap it up for an hour or two right after you get it done, thats a crucial time for infection. Vaseline helps wrap it. But after that hour or two.. you wash your tat, let it dry for 3o mins, and then apply some cream.

I've always been told to just wash it every few hours with the orange Dial soap, and not use ANYTHING on it at all.

That's what I've been hearing a lot lately from people. Though, those people lost a lot of colour on their tats, and they flaked a lot...

Every guy in the shop I go to said that they only use dial and warm water, and their tatts still look amazing.
