I don't think that I was ever taught vibrato! xd I just realized this, reading the thread. I just sort of... learned it... and I usually do whole arm vibrato, like the author of the thread.

That kid knows fourth position before knowing vibrato? Wow... I'm jealous... I wasn't able to teach myself fourth position, so I learned vibrato long before I learned how to shift. 3nodding

This video kind of shows the technique I'm talking about. The motion is mostly what I mean. Look at the motion the boy's hand is making, how it's mostly in the knuckles. That may be what you're missing. Place your finger on third finger D on the A string and do that motion with the bow. Do two "wahs" per bow. Basically it'll sound like a siren. Have the same number of beats per bow but change the number of "wahs" per bow. Okay, so say the metronome beat is the quarter note. Do "Wah-wah" for eigthnotes, "wah-wah-wah" triplets, "wah-wah-wah-wah" sixteenth notes, and just increase the speed like that. Make sure the metronome beat is slow. I think they reccommend 60, and I agree with that tempo.
I hope this helps.

thanks, that helped me too!

Okay, if you are holding all fingers down (say 3 for d on a string) DONT. Only hold one finger for that note, then try the motion. Helps me out.

That's true, for long notes. But for short, fast notes that you want to do vibrato on, just leave your fingers down. You'll be much happier.

On the subject of long notes, you also want to use the pad of your finger. The fingertip is good for dexterity and fast passages, but long notes get a richer vibrato if you use the "meatier" part.

I've been trying it out on my own, but... It sounds rather 'choppy', and the violin moves with me... redface So, thanks for the tips!

My eigth grade teacher made us students... Shake a plastic egg filled with rice. It's like the canister. Another thing would be to take a small piece of paper, fold it in half, and place one side on the board, with the other side on top of the strings.

And then, for books/random things that I've come upon, a way you can think of vibrato is... Wave at yourself...? I think that's it... sweatdrop

i cannot see my violinist life without vibrato, it come naturally.
Well to the point, what my teachers taught me (sorry for bad phrasing) was to play the violin touching a wall, so it is fixed, now you slowly do the wha-wha.

I'm having trouble too! I've played for about 4 years, and I'm only now STARTING to SOMEWHAT get it. It's hard! I don't know what to tell you other than this:

Try flexing your wrist in small circular motions, and gradually make the circles larger biggrin

this is how i learned, and i have pretty good vibrato now. i hope it helps.

start with your violin in rest position, tucked under your right arm. make sure your wrist is really straight. then slide your hand up and down the neck with your fingers archec over the trings but not on them. then try keep your thumb in place and move your hand back and forth. then do the same thing with your fingers sliding on the string. then use whatever finger is most comfortable (usually 2nd of 3rd, for me it was 2nd) hold it down in place on the string while doing the same motion with your hand. stick with one finger at first. when you can comfortably do that all in rest positio, go through all the steps again in playing position (don't try to play yet). when you are comfortable with that, try playing with vibrato on that note and go back and learn with your other fingers and try different speeds. it doesn't sound that great at first, but keep practicing it and it comes along. scales are good for practicing and experimenting. when you are comfortable with it, start using it on long notes in your pieces and eventually you'll be able to do it really well, even on the shorter notes. not every note always needs vibrato though. it gets over used sometimes.
