Okay, I have vibrato, but mine is horrible.

Plain and simple, I can pretty much only do one speed. And I can't do wrist, only arm. Sometimes I can't do it at all. And I was taught it years ago. (I've been playing for five years -- since 4th grade) I can't seem to fix this problem, no matter what I do.

Any ideas? My violin teacher doesn't seem to notice this problem, and my old orchestra teacher (coincidentally -- her dad) didn't really have time to help when he had a class. Actually, usually he does help individuals (he's one of the most amazing teachers..he won teacher of the year two years ago in Channel One news if you know what that is...).

Okay, enough blabbering.
Any suggestions? whee

Describe your vibrato in a bit more detail. You say you only have one speed. What speed would that be?

A good thing to do is hold the violin into position and wave your rise up and down the neck of the violin, loosely and be relaxed, don't be tight. Then practice that same relaxed, loose movement with a finger down, say D (third finger) on the A string.

You can also just flap your wrist up and down to loosen it up, if you are having tension problems with it. This helped me out when I was struggling with it, now it seems to be fine. Hope I have helped you.

Actually that method enhances "whole arm" vibrato motion, which is what she seems to already have. If you are wanting to develop a vibrato more in the wrist and hand I would recommend using the "wah-wah" method. It's somethig that's hard to explain so let me think on it for a few hours. I'll have some explaination in the morning.

http://www.violinmasterclass.com/vibrato_qt.php?video=vib_exer1&sctn=Exercises

This video kind of shows the technique I'm talking about. The motion is mostly what I mean. Look at the motion the boy's hand is making, how it's mostly in the knuckles. That may be what you're missing. Place your finger on third finger D on the A string and do that motion with the bow. Do two "wahs" per bow. Basically it'll sound like a siren. Have the same number of beats per bow but change the number of "wahs" per bow. Okay, so say the metronome beat is the quarter note. Do "Wah-wah" for eigthnotes, "wah-wah-wah" triplets, "wah-wah-wah-wah" sixteenth notes, and just increase the speed like that. Make sure the metronome beat is slow. I think they reccommend 60, and I agree with that tempo.
I hope this helps.

My first violin teacher was trying to teach vibrato to me but the rest of my teachers haven't tried to teach it to me yet. I can do vibrato a little bit. Some of those tips will help. With those tips, and my memory of how my violin teacher demonstrated vibrato, I could probably do well with some practice.

u might be able to go to a music store and find some books or a part of a book that has something in it for vibrato but idont remeber all the exersices that we had but jus relax and strech your arms and wrist out

I've never actually gotten one-on-one help learning vibrato, it's really difficult for me to learn, and I'm not currently in an orchstra or lessons. The problem I usually have is being tense.

I had the same problem. What helped me was doing this for a couple of weeks:
1) Get a small film canister (you know - the 35 mm ones) & fill it halfway w/ rice
2) Use your metronome (or a clock if u don't have one) & set it to 50 - 60 bpm
3) Place the canister in your right hand, & shake it in a slow vibrato (back & forth)
4) Start w/ quarter notes, then eigths, triplets, & sixteenths
***When your arm starts to hurt - STOP - you'll work up your arm/wrist muscles eventually & the longest you're supposed to do it is 10 minutes***
I hope this works!

Make sure your thumb is not squeezing the violin neck, and just twitch your finger wink

Ok, I am mainly a cellist, but recently I took up viola and now I am playing a little violin. I am also having a lot of trouble with vibrato! If I try to do it, then my cello vibrato gets all messed up...not to mention the fact that I CAN'T do vibrato on violin or viola! Can someone please just suggest what they would do when first beginning to learn vibrato?

When I was first learning, I was given this ball thingy with a bell inside it (like a cat toy) and I was supposed to do like, two shakes per beat on a metronome, and slowly get faster.

Vibratos are useful!
But so annoying to learn!
