Nicholai felt something strange well up in his heart, "It is a kindess that you do not think so. One that fuels my hope for the future." He reached to stroke her cheek, but stopped short, "May I?"

He traced her jawline then withdrew, closing his eyes against the feeling of her soft skin. His breathing became deeper, more ragged and he stepped away. The feeling made his heart pound and blood rush.

She stopped short and bit hard on her lip. This wasn't fair at all...her stupid instincts were telling her to go to him, her heart seemed to be with them for some reason while her head was screaming at her to be cautious.
