Nicholai suddenly understood. "What happened to your mother never should have happened. Any lifemate worth his salt should have seen better. If I have ever been that way with you, Serenata, I am deeply sorry. You will not have to worry about such things from me. Your happiness is of importance to me, and I will do my best to adapt to make you happy."

He nodded slowly, "Yes..." He would much rather see her happy than tied to him and miserable, but the only way for him to walk away now would be to greet the dawn. But if that is what it took to make her happy...so be it.

She hesitated but slowly, carefully, started to take down the mental barriers she'd slammed up when they'd first met and reached out to brush his mind to see if he really meant what he said...
