Nicholai stood there, watching her. He made no attempt to hide anything from her, all he wanted was pure, honest truth between them.

She saw there he'd meant it exactly. If she told him to leave it would be done...he'd seek the dawn. Something deep within her protested the thought violently! Serenata looked deeper, and found an honorable warrior, someone who fought against the darkness in all its forms. He was a skilled fighter, but even so he wasn't overly arrogant...he'd feared the worst...that he and his brother would turn...so much that he took a young hunter's training into his own hands...

She stumbled into his mind at present and found it chaotic, a whirl of colors and emotions...a stark contrast with his earlier thoughts so well organized but...she felt it then - the stark loneliness that came from too many years in the darkness and a pain. She withdrew for a moment, a little shaken by what she'd touched. It was vile, so dark...darker than anything she'd known in her safe and sheltered life with her family...something had scared him long ago.

He felt her in his mind, searching through it. When she touched the darkest pain, he flinched, but held himself open. Though he was convinced she would see the monster that he was if she kept digging.

Serenata frowned slightly, still a faint shadow in his mind she'd heard, but not understood. "Nicholai...I saw no monster."

"You have every right to know what happened, Serenata. It is a shame I will always carry with me. I would be doing you a disservice if you did not know. Those memories are ugly truths..." He broke her gaze and looked at the ground, shame welling up within him, "My brother and I are responsible for four of the vampires that pollute this world. We killed their lifemates."

Had we not been so ignorant and headstrong, they would still be alive and living happily with their lifemates. Instead there are four males who will never again have a soul on this earth." He risked looking at her, expecting to see the horror at what he and his brother had done on her face and feel the detestation in her mind.

"Nicholai..." her voice was filled with compassion and she reached for him, gently cupping his face to bring his eyes to hers. "I am young, but I know you did not kill those women. The vampires did...not you, never you..." She knew that much, such violence was not in him...it could not be. Not when she stood before him and he offered to leave her to her freedom, to walk away and exchange his life for her happiness.

Sad eyes stared back at her, "How is it that you can not see me for what I am, Serenata? I failed to protect them. I let them die. They would not even take our blood..." Slowly his arms moved to wrap around her in a loose embrace, ever careful to leave her room to get out of it.
