Curious eyes gazed all around the kitchen. It wasn't as if she's never been in one before, but she's never been in this particular one before. It carried an inviting look, but she was still skittish about the place. It was new, therefore scary. She didn't know the comfort of it quite just yet, so she was a bit skeptical about making a sandwich here of all places.
But she did want to at least try. She was a grown adult now, and she should at least know some things about the world. Making sandwiches were common knowledge, right?
I can get it... She replied hesitantly. Using her right paw, she swatted the bag of bread until it was within comfortable range. Her curious eyes gazed back at Darkside for the next instruction. What do I do next?

Darkside pondered a moment. -I suppose that depends on whether you want to eat the sandwich, or wrap it up and let someone else have it, little Pearl. But, generally speaking, you get two pieces of bread, and you put meat or vegetables or both between them depending on your preferences. Sometimes cheese.- He pulled the fridge door open, slowly so that her eyes could adjust to the light, and rummaged around until he had located some sandwich meat, some cheese slices, and some lettuce, and set the three out so she could have a look at them. -The meat and cheese for sandwiches come in different kinds, but they're usually packaged in a similar manner to these. As far as vegetables you can really put nearly any kind on a sandwich, but lettuce and tomato are fairly standard. They seem to be out of tomato... though that is perhaps not a bad thing, we'd have to cut it into slices and paws and knives don't get along well.-

Her eyes wandered all around the fridge as if she were a child in a toy store. There were so many interesting things in there, even if most were fairly blurry to her. She had never explored a fridge before. This was rather...exciting. But all this talk about food was making her hungry, too. Let's make a sandwich with meat, cheese and lettuce then...? She questioned while staring at Darkside with a soft smile upon her maw. Maybe not everyone was so scary.

Oh... Darkside was plenty scary. And very much a threat. ...To everyone but Pearl. He was actually starting to get somewhat attached to her. -So, you find the part of the package of meat that opens, there's usually a side with flaps that you can pull apart and re-seal. Get out what you want, put it between the bread slices, and close the package again. Then you open the bag the lettuce is in, take a leaf off, put the rest up, and put what you want of the leaf in with the meat.- He tilted his head. -Do you like cheese, also? We can get that too. And when the sandwich is made, we put the rest of the meat and such back in the fridge, and the bread on the counter. It's a courtesy thing, and to keep the food from spoiling.- Why was he so entertained with this? No one may ever know.

This whole sandwich thing was perking much of her interests. After listening to Darkside's instructions, she walked over towards the fridge and gazed at its handle for a short time. With both forepaws, she pulled open the handle and peered within. Even if she couldn't see the contents very well, she recalled how each of them smelled. The scent was condensed, but she could still pick out where each of them were.
With a paw, she scooted each of the packaged contents closer to her. Even if it was hard opening them without fingers, she managed somehow with the use of her paw and her mouth. After gathering each of the ingredients one by one, she would sit them at the bottom of the fridge as she wasn't entirely sure where else to put them.
Placing them all on one paw, she hopped back over to her bread and layered them carefully. Turning back to get a glance of the dark figure, she asked, Do you want a sandwich, too...?

He was briefly tempted to applaude when she finished, but decided that clapping might make her jump. So he let his approval leak into his mind voice when he responded. -I thank you for the thought, little Pearl, but I'm not particularly hungry at the moment. Though... would you like some water?- Truth was he could eat "normal" food, and even did so on occasion just to amuse himself, it really didn't do anything to sate him when he did need sustenance. Water he didn't need either, but he enjoyed the sensation of fluid moving through his more solid form enough that he tried to drink something on a regular basis. And if he waited long enough it did actually seep into his shadow particles, so that even if he wasn't solid it would remain. And anyone passing "through" him would feel as if they'd suddenly walked through a chill mist, which was rather amusing with the supersitious sorts...
But Pearl didn't need to know about his bad habits, now did she? He didn't particularly want to disturb this delicate... whatever it was they'd developed, even if he only realized that on a subconscious level. So he was going to keep those tidbits quiet for now.

To hear the approval in his "voice" made her feel reliefed. She accomplished something, even if it was something so simple as making a sandwich. He helped her through it, but he didn't do it for her which made the difference in her mind. Maybe she could do something after all, besides feeling timid and running all the time. Though if it came to, she could probably out hide any child in a game of hide and seek...not that it really counted in her mind or anything.
Water...sounds good. Thank you... She voiced lightly in his mind. But she wanted to thank him more than just for the water. She wanted to thank him for helping her make the sandwich and feel a little less afraid of others for the moment. The words to express that, however, didn't quite form in her mind. Maybe next time, then...maybe next time.

Baby steps, Pearl. Baby steps. Darkside was patient when he wanted to be, and instantly easy friendships weren't the sort of thing either of them just fell into. There would be time enough to work on expressing oneself later. Not like Darkside actually intended to return this time around even if his mission was completed quickly... which he sincerely doubted at this point. But that was an entirely different matter...
Darkside went over to the cabinet where the bowls were kept and removed two, then took them over to where the faucet was and filled them one at a time. He went slowly, too, so Pearl could keep up with where he was going and what he was doing. Then he brought the bowls back one at a time, placing one in front of Pearl first and then retrieving his own. -Go ahead and eat if you are hungry, little Pearl. The bread gets rather dry if you wait too long. I'm satisfied with a bowl of water.- And company. Though he still didn't realize that last part on a conscious level.

She followed behind him as if she was a puppy following around its master all over the house. Whenever he stepped away, she felt the need to follow after his steps. She felt comfortable around him enough to follow, but she still kept a small distance between the two of them as a buffer. It was a just in case anything bad appeared. But she didn't doubt Darkside, she didn't think he would suddenly turn on her...No, he wouldn't do that to her, not after all the careful things he did for her. It was sort of a just in case buffer for if anything bad appeared in front of Darkside. Not that she doubted he couldn't care for himself.
With a small nod of the head, she sat down on the floor with her hindlegs supporting her. She held onto the sandwich with both forepaws, eating it little by little. It tasted pretty good for a first time sandwich, she had to say. A bit dry, but probably because she waited. Still, the taste of the sandwich didn't really matter as much as how it symbolised her accomplishment.
After finishing the sandwich, she patted the crums off her paws then placed all four paws back on solid ground again. Leaning in closer, she started drinking the water Darkside fetched for her. Water after a meal always tasted good, but this water tasted a little better than usual water. Maybe it was a different faucet, or because of Darkside's kindness. Thanks... She voiced softly in his mind again after finishing the water. She also wanted to thank him for keeping her company, even if only temporarily. Another time, though. Another time.
