The lightning bolt made the ground give off a pulse. Horizon shivered. 'Poor Dalin...' she thought. '...struck down by the Gods.'

As the blue male left the glowing fainter, Horizon walked up to her again. As she looked down at the lioness, her father's face came to mind. She splashed more water in her face. "Common get up," she grumbled in an aggravated/rushed voice. Still she was trying to be nice. This lioness needed all the help she could get. With a coat like that Zahina hadn't made her fit for survival. Horizon was surprised this lioness had survived to this day. Plus, the blue boy thought she had bad intentions. No, she was helping. "See look I can be nice," she sarcastically groaned to herself. "Silly Zahinas..." She just hoped there was some good that would come from all this hard work.

Damu continued to kick his opponent. It looked like the striped male was exhausted. The adrenaline pumped through his veins. Just a bit more...
Suddenly something changed. Ainesh'eyes went weird and he burst into a frenzy, starting to kick back at him. Snapping teeth came towards his face, startling him. He felt nauseous and the pain in his belly worsened with every hit. That lion was absolutely crazy. Damu started to fling his front paws wildly around, trying to slap Ainesh' face away.
Then a bolt of thunder struck down one of the lions around them. The deafening sound made him freeze for a second. He tried to focus on the other male again. The nausea had made him lightheaded. Hopefully Ainesh would be disoriënted too so he could roll away and get back up.

Horizon was definitely right in the assumption that Malek would misinterpret her intentions. When the red Dalin moved closer to Kero, the blue lion’s head turned so abruptly that he was sure he heard something crack somewhere around his neck. It wasn’t long before his mind took in the details and the situation left him with an odd expression, lips still curling over his long canines in a sort of confused sort of grin.

All be damned. The storm “… is making everyone mad.” Malek’s whispered words concluded in a barely audible mutter. Da’lins fighting each other, Da’lins and Zahinas working together… it was all so very odd. And – even if rather bitterly - he added a quiet apology.

“Is she waking up?” The blue lion asked as he slowly returned to Kero’s side, shamelessly demonstrating who his top priority was at the moment. Malek did sent a few quick glances to the injured female but otherwise moved steadily towards the purple lioness.

(the first paragraph came from my last post. This way Kero doesn't stand up before Malek asks if she's waking up.)

Kero felt the cold dirty rainwater crash against her face. She felt light headed but she had nearly coming to. When her eyes opened she saw a red Dalin towering over her. She didn't understand. What just happened? Quickly she stood and shook herself out of her dizzy spell.

"Don't push yourself. Do you want to pass out again? I don't know if you noticed, but this isn't the best place to be if you're a fainter," again, she spoke rudely but with a hint of concern. She didn't reply the blue male. The glowing lioness answered it for him.

Kero seemed shocked that the lioness helping her was Dalin. That was the second one of them to help her today. Before today she had never met one. Maybe they weren't all bad. "Thank you, and sorry. I didn't mean to get in the middle of this. I'm just looking for food for a cave full of lions. One of them just gave birth only a short while ago. I should hurry on my way"

Horizon had half a mind to give the glowing lioness the corps. After all, it was unguarded at this second. And to top it off, this lioness wanted it unselfishly. But above all in Horizon's mind, the lioness reminded Horizon of herself as a cub when she cared for her family by night. Horizon's stomach growled too quite to hear over the storm. So, for the first time in years Horizon's mind couldn't make a quick decision. It froze the expression of deep thought on her face.

(I meant for him to ask “Is she alright?” but I ended up writing something that didn’t fit… xD)

Malek sighed a rather heavy sigh right after Kero stopped talking. Well, so much for an easy meal. Sure, there were others that needed it more but it still felt like he had wasted time, energy and effort chasing after that carcass. He would have offered to help carry the body to the cave Kero had spoke of – if only to make sure the bright lioness was telling the truth – but he was foreseeing some problems ahead.

“If that’s how it is, then I’ll back you up while you take it.” He told Kero quietly. “But I can’t promise you won’t be followed. There are a lot of lions here and I doubt most of them care about the reasons you’re depriving them of a meal.” And as his doubt-filled eyes turned to face Horizon, it became increasingly clear he was trying to predict her next actions. As far as he was concerned, she was still a Da’lin above all else.

-----------------------

Ari was finding herself excitingly close to the carcass but still well concealed with the tall grass. Another step and she’d be out in the open but even that prospect didn’t sound half as scary as before when she looked around to find every lion fighting or talking (!). The gazelle was hers and she was definitely going to be the one to drag it away!

Horizon ignored Malek's stare. She looked Kero dead in the eye. "It would be a shame if you passed out again and he was stuck carrying both you and your carcass all the way to this cave. And he's right, there will be followers, maybe even whole prides you might stumble into. You need all the help you can get! I'll go with you. That is if you trust me," Horizon said in a judgemental tone. Her eyes shifted over them both. What was the blue boy looking at? Sudden movements? She wasn't going to bite both their heads off, if that's what he thought.

Kero was shocked. She didn't mean that she was leaving with the meal, yet these two strangers were offering it up to her. "I don't think I can accept it. You're offer is more than generous!"

“Perhaps you would help more if you stayed behind to make sure those two lose her scent.” Malek told Horizon. There was no way that years of being told Da’lins were nothing but manipulative and cruel versions of Zahina lions could be erased by the a few seemingly kind actions… especially when they came from a female Da’lin. The blue male barely bothered to hide his mistrust but the last thing he wanted was to start a fight with Horizon right now. “That’s what I’ll do anyway.”

Malek’s eyes grew kinder as he turned to face Kero for he was rather pleased she hadn’t expected being handed over such a coveted meal by a bunch of strangers.
“The little ones must be the top priority. You should take it. I’ll do my best to keep them off you.” And his eyes drifted almost imperceptible towards Horizon before Malek pulled them back to glare at the males who had been fighting.

"Fine fine, I'll stay behind. Just hurry up and get out of here," Horizon said. She rolled her eyes and sighed.

"Thank you both," Kero said, "Hopefully someday I can return the favor." She picked up the carcass and held on tight with her fangs. Her back still stung, and she didn't want to throw weight on it. So, she would have to drag it.
She hurried to get away from the scene but slipped here and there. Still she kept pulling. After only a few seconds of dragging and slipping along she found herself dangerously close to something crouching in the grass.

((Apologies for the delay and the small response. I didn't want Kero to run off too far because Ari is only a few feet away.))

Facing Horizons’s expression, Malek‘s mouth opened in a smile that was both sheepish and mischievous. Perhaps he really was judging the female a little too harshly. He watched Kero go, following her movements closely with keen interest until he noticed she was getting close to something… something with ears and… teeth. Something hidden in the grass… someone that looked as if it would leap against the bright female at any moment.

“Oi!” When his paws pushed the ground he had hesitated for only a second but he didn’t have any hopes of reaching Kero on time. A hoarse roar scratched his throat and boomed in the bright light’s direction but somehow he had a feeling it would all be worthless.

-----------------

When the spotted lioness saw the approaching female, Ari would’ve crouched even lower if onlythat were physically possible. A cold shiver ran through her spine. There was no way she was just going to let her prey be snatched away from right under her nose. No, she’d been patient. She’d waited in the middle of all those Da’lins. She wouldn’t let one of these beasts just come and take her food away.

She rose a little, body tense. A soft growl, easily mistaken by a purr would hardly be heard by anyone other than herself. And she leaped, silently and without hesitation. As strongly as she could while trying to compensate her smaller frame with an extra dose of viciousness. She aimed her unsheathed claws at the lioness’ shoulder just as she was passing her by and her mouth open agape, anticipating the flesh of Kero’s neck.

By the time Kero cold see what was in the grass, it was already leaping for her. She let out a moan and she fell to her side. Her body splashed against the muddy ground. Kero let out a weak roar. That's when she realized, she had let go of the carcass. She couldn't see the attacker, the carcass, or anything past the mud. In panic she kicked and scratched in all directions.

It was obvious she was not a good fighter. She never had to work a day of her life as a child. Since she was kicked from the family pride she had grown better at fending for herself, but her inexperience still showed through.

Horizon's eyes caught the attacking lioness in a second. She felt disappointed that she didn't spot that one. But now wasn't a good time to feel bad about herself. She raced ahead to the scene, ignoring how hard it was to run on frictionless wet ground, hoping her and Malek could make it in time.

Everything was black. Black and painful. Ellipsis couldn't think; couldn't talk; couldn't breathe. A dark, hazy mist wound its thread around her mind, blocking off her senses, dulling her thoughts. Nothing existed but the pain. She truly had no idea of what had hit her.

Despite Damu's hopes, Ainesh hadn't even twitched a whisker at the bolt of lightning. His unrelenting claws pummeled the other lion, sharp blades slicing through soft, delicate flesh. It was almost like a rather messy prey kill. Feeling the lapse of his enemy, he swiped out with his front paw, aiming to catch the lion on his head, before leaping off to assess the situation.

The fighting around him seemed to have died down, apart from one last battle. Obviously some stupid lion had tried to steal the carcass. Bah. Who needed it anyway? With a low growl, he instantly set about checking himself for injuries. It almost made him wince. Almost, but not quite. The lions had put up a fight, and he'd be limping on his left knee for a while. Not even the cold, pelting rain could wash the thick blood off his pelt, already a dried, dark brown in color. What little of his pelt wasn't covered in blood was thickly plastered over with mud. Thick, grueling mud that tasted bitter to the tongue. That wouldn't come off anytime soon.

Highly unsatisfied with his condition, he noticed a limp form on the ground. A small patch of dark fur, unsullied by the mud, revealed her to be the prize he had sought. Narrowing his eyes, he padded closer. Was she dead? Had all this damned fighting been for nothing? Not that he really cared. The fight had been enjoyable, and certainly quenched that blood-lust that would have hit at any second. Heck, if the lioness was dead, she'd probably make a nice meal. But no, there was the light fluttering of her heart as it tried to re-stabilize itself. Would she survive? Maybe, maybe not.

Whilst everyone's attention was distracted, he gently grasped her by the scruff of the neck and pulled her onto his back. She was light, for a lion. Probably lithe and quick, rather than a brutal fighter like him. And so, whilst everyone else's eyes were on their own prize (aka the carcass), Ainesh sprinted off with his prize, overcoming the weakness in his leg to escape from the situation.

Ari took the wave of mud and scratches with the loudest fury as she fell over the fluorescent lioness. She was actually doing a pretty good job at ignoring the nasty cuts (even though it was more a matter of adrenaline rush than self control exactly) until a particularly well-aimed kick knocked her a few feet backwards. When she raised her head again, fiery eyes searching for the prey’s location, she caught the two shapes approaching... fast. Still running on instinct, she waited for little more than a second before letting out a low whimper filled with bitter resignation and turned brusquely on her back paws to run like the wind. The carcass was too heavy. There would be no dinner tonight. Damn those Da’lins.

-----------------

“Damn her.” Malek roared with barely contained frustration as he reached the bright lying shape of Kero. “Are you…? Can you stand up?”

The spotted lioness was running at full speed and it would be pointless to follow her but Malek spared a few moments to make sure the remaining lions weren’t going to take advantage of the distraction before giving Kero his full attention. But he couldn’t deny he was surprised by Horizon’s swiftness as she ran by his side. Could she really be worried?

Kero appeared not to glow anymore, due to being caked in mud and blood here and there. She looked up at the blue boy, unsure exactly what just happened. It was all a blur. All she knew was that she wasn't being attacked anymore. She pushed herself up, suppressing the urge to groan in pain. "Yeah, I think I've got it. Thank you," she said. She felt like some outside force had stood her up, because in this condition she usually would be more interested in laying down dead and giving up. Well, it was a magical night. The events back at the caves showed her proof of that.

The spotted lioness was smart to run. This carcass wasn't worth fighting for after all the damage it already had done. Horizon searched the area around Kero for the Pride's meal. Once she found it she looked back at the scene where the lightning had hit. The lions seemed to be gone as far as she could tell. Maybe the lightning chased them off. But what about the one who was struck? Horizon doubted that she just stood and ran off after that. Horizon decided to come along with them. No reason not to. The glowing lioness shouldn't carry the carcass in her condition. Horizon threw the gazelle onto her own back. "Let's just get you home as fast as possible," she said. She'd go along but not get too close to Kero's Pride. They'd never have to know a Da'lin helped her.

“I agree.”

Malek followed suit, adjusting his position to better support Kero as she walked by leaning faintly against her shoulder blades, throwing strange glances at the Da’lin female all the while.

“Let’s go then. One step at a time.” He said softly to the bright female, encouraging her to move.
