It is a rather hard decision, having the threat of mauling if you don't say "I do it all for the music."
I go for the visuals, any time I can. It's not always because I hate the band but they're too hot to miss out, but it's the fact that in the PVs, someone actually has an instrument in their hand and they're playing like nothing else matters but performing their best for their fans that will probably be watching obsessively, trying not to squeal, so on so forth.

LOOKS > MUSIC!!!!!!!!! scream xp Yes, because Visual Kei is the only form of Japanese music worth paying attention to! Those non-visual artists just outright suck! I wanna see hawt bois in skirts more than a bunch of pansies bouncing around on stage in plain T-shirts! blaugh Yeap, those other losers need to get hit by a very large truck! (One being driven by bunnies perhaps?) 3nodding

Personally, I go for the looks first but if they're music is crap I won't listen to them, but if they're good looking and they're music rocks I am a devoted fan.

Well I'm not too big on guys in kilts playing bagpipes...Especially when I'm in the front row and things get a little too revealing...And after I had just gotten over the trauma of seeing David Draiman from Disturbed playing with himself on stage in crappy leather that made him look 3 feet tall...

I like watching the videos. I like to see the creative things and outfits I am draw to fashion. Equalily I like the music, it is just as good.

This is a hard subject for me...
Now everyone's gonna pick the music choice so they don't sound like a shallow person.. but the truth is that probably 80% if not more SAW the band before they decided to LISTEN to them. Right? I mean it happens all the time -- you see them in a Jrock mag, you wanna check them out.. but you base it off looks.
Given a picture of Dir en grey and let's say... Bump of Chicken and asked which band you'd like to listen to without ever hearing the music before the majority is gonna pick Dir en grey. Because they're more flashy?? Why base a band off of that?? It's a sad thing cause Bump of Chicken's music totally puts Dir to shame. =(
I feel GREAT GREAT bands are always overlooked because they don't have the big time visual appeal of others. Bands like Zeppet Store, Zigzo, The Yellow Monkey and even Takui (Even though he is pretty visual he's overlooked). That, too, is a shame. There's soooo much talent out there and all the adoration is being wasted on Dir en grey and Miyavi (What the hell is miyavi anyway? Japanese people can't pronounce a V and replace it with a B anyway...)
Most everyone I'm into I've heard from word of mouth -- not pictures. =/

You can't really compare Bump of Chicken to Dir en grey. I haven't heard a BoC song that went to crazy metal music. Dir en grey is more diverse. BoC is just rock, like The Pillows.
My thing is, I don't care what the band looks like, but I don't see what's wrong with liking their look. What I mean is, if they're uninteresting, it's not going to stop me from listening to their music. Look at Melt-Banana, I want to marry the whole band, but they don't dress anything attractive.
On the other hand, I love Dir en grey, their looks ( heart ) and music, and I will fangirl obsess over their looks because they ARE good looking to me. I will continue to admire MALICE MIZER because I think their Le Ciel costumes were great. I don't see what's wrong with likiing their looks! I mean, if they're a visual band, I'm sure they expect that looks will be a TREMENDOUS factor to their fanbase. Right?
