James wasn’t sure who he was supposed to take advice from. His mother looked like she was about to start crying and his father seemed fine with him leaving. He looked back and forth between his parent’s faces clearly torn. He did want to leave. This place was nice and safe, but the only other foxes that actually stayed in the area were his parents. He wanted to meet others and see the world, but to cause his mother to cry was going against every fiber of his being. He had always been taught to take care of his mother and to be a ‘good boy.’ Part of this just felt wrong and confusing. “Can I?”

It broke Eli’s heart to see her son like that and know that she was the cause at least in part. Smiling while she felt tears slide down her cheeks she nodded at her son and watched as his face light up. The idea of him leaving was the last thing she wanted but from the stroking that Farle was doing to her shoulder she knew it was the right thing to do. She leaned into Farle and buried her face in his fur. It was as warm as the day he first found her and started to take care of her.

Farle held Eli close. It brought him back to the day she had demanded he take her as his mate and give her kits. It was one of the few times Eli had ever been forceful on a subject and of course Farle had been helpless to her demands. He blinked. Maybe that was a solution to this problem. Eli was scared of James leaving home, but she wouldn’t be if she had more kits to look after. He knew how hard it was on her to only have one kit when she wanted a big family. Trying to have a few more kits wouldn’t hurt, and they would keep them both busy.

James couldn’t help the smile starting to spread on his face. His tail wagged behind him and he even dropped his broom. He was so excited, a part of him also felt a bit sad at the prospect of leaving. Still it would mean being able to get out and see the world beyond just the forest that he could see from the top of the abandoned human dwelling they called their own. He had to gather food and start planning his journey. He didn’t feel the cold so it wasn’t as though he would have to wait for spring if he took some food with him. Still he would need something to carry it all in. Surly his parents would let him take one of the old human cloths his dad used to carry food in when tied around his broom. “I’ll have to take some things from the den would that be ok?”

Oh Eli just wanted to beat that boy up and make him come to his senses. She pressed harder into Farle’s fur and decided to just let him handle things with their son. She was too upset to deal with things. She knew it but she also didn’t want to calm down. She felt more tears in her fur but couldn’t seem to stop them. She wrapped her tail around herself and just leaned against Farle. She couldn’t smile right now. She didn’t know if she could ever smile again.

Nodding Farle gestured to his son. “Go take what you need but come back here before you start out. We’ll see you off t to the edge of the forest at least.” He held his mate close and waved his son off. He watched as James darted off toward the den. Then he turned his attention to his mate when he was certain that James was out of earshot. “Eli I know this will be hard but James does need to get out and lead his own life. After all we can’t just treat him like a kit forever. He is a grown fox and wants to see the world. Think of this way had I not left home I would never have met you.”

James raced up the steps and into the family den. He flipped off his hat and hat it sitting upside down while he snagged a blanket and food the blanket he had on his back while the bit of food he did take he put into his hat. When he was done he put the blanket over the opening and after struggling with it for a few moments managed to wrap his hat up with the blanket. He slipped his broom at the top where he had tied the blanket with his teeth and paws. This way he could balance the food and not have to leave his broom behind. He was an inventive boy he was certain he could find a use for it out in the wide world.

“I know dear I know. That doesn’t make it any easier on a mother watching her only baby leave though.” Eli sniffled and pressed herself harder against her mate. “He will come back and visit us won’t he? Farle you and he are all I have. I don’t want to lose that..” Eli couldn’t look Farle in the eyes. She wanted an answer; no she wanted to hear the answer she wanted even if it was lie. The idea of her son just disappearing and never coming back again hurt too much.

Farle nuzzled his mate softly. “I know my love I know.” Chewing on his pipe he wondered if he should tell her what he planned, they were alone after all. “You know now that James will be out of the den we could, if you wanted, have more little ones. I’m certain it would be easier than when we had to be careful because we had James bounding about everywhere.” He felt a bit forward for even suggesting such a thing.

~for the sake of laziness James is still packing~
What? He was thinking about having more kits? Eli’s head spun for a moment she was in shock. For a movement she starred at him open mouthed not sure what to say. Then he coughed and averted his eyes. Eli realized then that what Farle was offering was more for her than him. In that moment she loved him more than the whole world. “Yes I would like that Farle I would like that very much.” She started to nuzzle him.

James came out the human made building carrying his load and was surprised to see his mother nuzzling his father and his father licking his mother’s head. The last time he saw them like that was when he was young and his parents thought he wouldn’t notice. They looked good together. He thought maybe he should have left before this if it gave his parents more time together. He stood off to the side and waited for them to notice him.

Nuzzling his beloved mate back Farle noticed some movement out of the corner of his eye. It was just James dismissing his son Farle kept his focus on his mate. To his disappointment she seemed to have noticed their son too and decided to focus on him rather than Farle. Sighing and knowing it was inevitable Farle moved aside a bit so that Eli could have a clear view of their boy. James turned at his mother’s polite cough and approached slowly. Well at least he had the decency to keep his back to them until Eli had made a sound. He would be fine out in the world.

Oh honestly Eli was blushing as James came up. She and Farle loved each other deeply but she always insisted on keeping that to a minimum around James. She knew he wasn’t a kit, but there was a part of her that wanted to keep him as innocent as possible. Still he was an adult and he was even headed out on his own.. even so a part of Eli felt so embarrassed. “A-are you all set James?” Her voice quivered as she started to let go of her embarrassment and started to once more fear for her son.

“Yep I have enough food to get me started out and I took a cover to keep warm. I’ve got my other things so I think I’ll be just fine.” He grinned broadly at his mother noticing that she was still blushing but it was starting to subside. His father on the other hand looked just fine. In fact the James used to wonder if his father was half statue because it seemed he always had the same fact no matter what happened. He felt relieved and supported when his father nodded at him and even though Farle didn’t smile James could swear his father’s eyes looked a little misty with pride.

Not wanting to spoil Eli’s good bye Farle kept his thoughts to himself. He wanted to let James know that he could come back any time and that as his father Farle was proud. Still James was a confident lad he didn’t need to hear such things, besides Farle thought with a chuckle. Eli was kicking up enough of a fuss for both of them. She had moved forward and was fussing over James fur telling him to look out for strangers and such. “He’ll be fine Eli.”
