Lillielle I am guilty of taking ages to update anything. And starting new stories all the time. Although at least I think the longest I've ever taken was like 2 years? redface I don't ever intend on actually completely abandoning anything though. If I did, I'd update the description to say that.
OOC bugs me. Well--it depends on the surrounding plot, and if they actually warn for OOC/AU, because I love AU stories and sometimes OOC really works. But when someone's just made Snape a really fluffy loving person who cuddles puppies and adores Harry for no flipping reason, um. No. emotion_donotwant
I also hate the epic-length author's notes. Especially on oneshots, where the AN ends up being longer than the actual story.
When people don't proofread at all. I don't mind occasional spelling and grammar mistakes but when it's every sentence, I turn into a dragon of rage and hit the back button. Just...no. evil
When people are apparently just adding in canon scenes, without changing them at all, or editing how they were written. That's plagiarism. And also, really jarring because it doesn't fit their own writing style at all.
And a big one because I love hurt/comfort. When the author has just put a character through something that is literally impossible to survive, or that would seriously put them in the hospital for ages, and they are somehow walking, talking, and fine. stare Thank you! I hate OOC when there isn't a good enough reason for it. And as I'm sure you've gathered, I hate the long-winded author's notes that are legitimately conversations with other members. rolleyes You mentioned something that has bugged me quite a bit and I find that I see it fairly often: canon scenes that are taken directly from the original work and placed into a fic. Gosh, this one really irritates me for some reason. I think because I bend over backwards to try not to rehash canon scenes word for word because I think, "Okay, the readers have already seen/heard this before" and I feel like it's a bit of a cop out. As for the characters that get severely injured and they're just fine, I've seen a lot of that. Unless it's a fantasy setting where there are health potions/poultices/salves and the like that remedy terrible injuries fairly well, I highly doubt the character should be skipping around when injured.

I'm starting to get really annoyed by character/reader stories. Mostly because they're overpopulating the archive of a fandom I just got into.
What if I don't wanna fall in love with the character? What if I don't want the character to fall in love with me? What if I want them to get with another character from the cannon? Seriously, like 60% of the AO3 archive for it is character/reader stories and I don't get why! What is so bad about shipping characters with other characters?

Night Kunoichi Violent Crow Thank you! Yes the injuries part drives me insane. I hate it when I say, "Whoa, you're fighting already?! You were just in the hospital a few hours ago!!" It's what I consider to be crossing into Sue territory. I don't really care for the characters that can do it all- and to me, being able to traipse about after being nearly beaten to death, actually being beaten to death (what I mean is if the beating the character received would kill any normal person), etc., is liable to make me scoff. Unless, of course, the universe that the story is taking place in allows for that sort of thing. But if the author already made it known that the character is physically unable to handle such brutality or the universe that the story takes place in doesn't allow it- you've lost me.

But when literally all they're doing is having conversations with reviewers (who aren't anonymous reviewers, even), it's like...no. Stop. That is what PM is for. emotion_facepalm
Yes! Like the trend in the Harry Potter fandom to do a "characters read the books" thing. Bonus points for how I have literally only read one that had a freaking plot to go along with it. But no, it seems most of the time, it's only an excuse to fangasm over the books while you make all the characters wildly OOC, Harry's an absolute darling saint, and people come back from the dead because reasons. emotion_donotwant
Those are so frustrating. Hell, even in magical settings, sometimes, if there's no access to any of that. Like people in HP can you tell my main fandom yet aha who make the Dursleys' abuse worse...okay fine, I do that all the time, too. But do not dare tell me Harry just made a train ride looking fine because glamours, when he's got like three broken ribs, a concussion, other broken bones, and his lung's punctured.

No characterXyou allowed. emotion_awesome All joking aside (because even though those stories aren't allowed, people still post them), those stories bug me because of how vague the author has to be. "Oh (YourName), I'm so glad that you're here! I thought I'd never see your beautiful (EyeColor) eyes again!" And also how you, the reader, get a wonderful personality swap that somehow makes you attractive to every. damn. character. Oddly enough, however, people eat those stories up. I don't know why, though. emotion_facepalm

Back when I was in high school and completely obsessed with Inuyasha, I was in love with Sesshoumaru and I ate up all the Sess/reader stories I could find. They were cheap and poorly written with almost no development to speak of. But they were a nice bit of fantasy fulfillment. So, I get why they exist and why they're so popular. I just grew up and so don't like them anymore. Now they annoy the crap out of me. (Especially if its a character I strongly ship with another character.)

I get the wish fulfillment aspect (although I personally used my own imagination to interact with characters... I believe this is where I should insert a "forever alone" meme), but for me they're usually poorly done. Most of the time, in their quest to be very personal by attempting to have the reader "interact" with the story, the authors make the story rather impersonal. The flow becomes quite robotic with the incessant (InsertSomeDescriptionAboutTheReader) and the generic personalities awarded to the reader start to seem tired... So for me, they're just uncomfortable to read.

Those fics. I remember trying to read a "Characters Read..." fic and it didn't turn out so well. You're spot on about the characters being insanely OOC for the sake of some wish-fulfillment-gone-wrong. If I want wish fulfillment, I want it done with the characters that I fell in love with. Not with some knock-off characters that make me cringe. I could go on and on about some of the insane abuses that authors inflict upon characters only to have those character up and at 'em like nothing. sweatdrop

It was a self-insert story for the Dragon Age fandom. The writer had just literally been thrown into Thedas (DA universe) and she stumbled across the main hero and his family. As per the game's storyline, they're attacked by Darkspawn, namely a humongous freakin' ogre. If you aren't familiar with the ogres in Dragon Age, here's a picture. Huge Ogre, right here.Anyway, the writer/character is maybe fourteen and apparently a master marksman. After getting roughed up in a manner that would have killed any player's starting character, she kills the ogre single-handedly. Yes... All by herself... All by herself even though there was a talented mage, two trained swordsmen, and a warhound on hand. And she got out with a few scrapes and maybe a concussion. I'm not too sure since the author pulled the story after about twenty chapters.

This one is specific to AO3.
Authors not providing descriptions for their series. I understand why some of them do this. Each fic in the series has a description/summary, it would be a bit redundant to have a description/summary for the series that just repeats the same things as the story summaries. But what about the fan fic series that take place along the same fanon continuity, but don't really have much to do with one another? Something like that should get a series description even if its just one sentence "my take on the Marvel universe and characters". Just something so the reader knows what the link is between all the fics and why they're all group together in the same series.
It just bothers me when I find a great fic that's part of a series, but when I go to read the rest of the series, the other fics in it don't seem to have anything to do with each other.

The one active self-insert I write has a clear heads up for readers. It specifically says I write for my own enjoyment, but they're free to read it if they choose to.
I need at least one pointless story to let out all the ideas that build up in my head.
